Hey I've got a prob and I'm hoping one of you's will know how to fix it.

It doesn't happen all the time but sumtimes when my car is still kinda cold it won't boost, it started doin it after I changed the oil so I was thinking it might have sumthing to do with that?

Any help would be great.

I'll have a look and see if There's any loose tubes today.

I warm the car up for like 15mins before I drive it, thought that'll be enough?

Btw, if it's not boosting, if I turn the car off and then back on itwill start to boost again. Its weird man lol

Thanks for ur help, galois u calling me a retard? Be sure to say it to my face at the next meet up.

lol, I think you are taking the term "retard" out of context...

Rich - More fuel is thrown into the engine to lower the air to fuel ratio

Retard - Ignition timing is changed so that fuel ignition happens later

What does this mean? I'm no mechanic but my understanding is that the ECU thinks the engine may be experiencing something that may cause damage to the engine and is actively trying to protect it.

Hahahahaha that's hilarious, when I saw the preview in my email I'm like "wtf did I say to this guy?!". Not laughing at you mate, I've read the term "rich and retard" so many times and never once like that hahaha.

No need to get aggressive on the forums though mate, it's all just good fun. If you stick round long enough you'll probably get a lot more shit than that for doing absolutely nothing, some people just love the excuse of being anonymous to abuse people.

I'll elaborate a bit more, but I'm FAR from an expert.

The r33's seem to hit rich and retard, where the engine goes into safety mode, easily when the engine has some extra boost added. The boost level seems to change depending on the car (and weather etc, cold dense air often triggers it), and no idea why but most of the posts I've read have it happening on r33's.

Maybe have a search for rich and retard or low boost or something? It comes up fairly regularly on sau. That's assuming it's an ecu cut issue.

Take it easy though, don't thrash it till you've got it figured out or something might go pop.

Yea I thought u were taking the piss outa me lol

But yea there's afew keyboard heroes out there :|

Well like I said I might take it to uni group when I get chance, it's due for a retune anyways... Last place I took it too f**ked it and it pings here and there on high boost :/

Till than tho I'll be running it on low boost.

Btw it only does that boost cut thing when it's a really cold morning so it might be as u said. But yea it's only done it twice on me in the past month so i dunno.

Honestly thanks for ur info, I'll search the forums for abit regarding rich and retard after work.

You're not kidding there mate *shakes head*

Let us know how it goes, good tuner's seem to solve all the problems :D

Good luck!

Cold mornings mean the motor will be running quite rich untill it is properly warm, It would be miss firing because it cant burn the all the fuel.

How long since you have changed the plugs, they are probably starting to foul up.

    • Bit of a pity we don't have good images of the back/front of the PCB ~ that said, I found a YT vid of a teardown to replace dicky clock switches, and got enough of a glimpse to realize this PCB is the front-end to a connected to what I'll call PCBA, and as such this is all digital on this PCB..ergo, battery voltage probably doesn't make an appearance here ; that is, I'd expect them to do something on PCBA wrt power conditioning for the adjustment/display/switch PCB.... ....given what's transpired..ie; some permutation of 12vdc on a 5vdc with or without correct polarity...would explain why the zener said "no" and exploded. The transistor Q5 (M33) is likely to be a digital switching transistor...that is, package has builtin bias resistors to ensure it saturates as soon as base threshold voltage is reached (minimal rise/fall time)....and wrt the question 'what else could've fried?' ....well, I know there's an MCU on this board (display, I/O at a guess), and you hope they isolated it from this scenario...I got my crayons out, it looks a bit like this...   ...not a lot to see, or rather, everything you'd like to see disappears down a via to the other side...base drive for the transistor comes from somewhere else, what this transistor is switching is somewhere else...but the zener circuit is exclusive to all this ~ it's providing a set voltage (current limited by the 1K3 resistor R19)...and disappears somewhere else down the via I marked V out ; if the errant voltage 'jumped' the diode in the millisecond before it exploded, whatever that V out via feeds may have seen a spike... ....I'll just imagine that Q5 was switched off at the time, thus no damage should've been done....but whatever that zener feeds has to be checked... • I think Fitmit had some, have a look on there (theyre Australian as well)
    • Hah, fair enough! But if you learn with this one you can drive any other OEM manual. No modern luxury features like auto rev-matching or hillstart assist to give you a false sense of confidence. And a heavy car with not that much torque so it stalls easily.
    • Actually, I'd say all three are the automatic option. Just the different trim levels. The manual would be RSFS, no?
