Since BP Ultimate is not anywhere convenient for me, I use Mobil 8000. when I was running at the limit with a stock intercooler I found I needed to turn boost down on Optimax or pinging would occur.

Don't have an opinion on BP yet.

This could all be urban myth but a little while ago I heard someone say that 98RON is going to be wound back to 96RON and even 95RON so i started asking everytime i'd put fuel in at Shell or BP or Mobil id ask at the counter what octane it was and for all the fuels i was told it's 96RON apparently the CALTEX refinery where it all comes from they stopped running 98RON

btw This is in sydney im talking about could be diff in other states.

BP ultimate and Optimax are 98 RON whereas other normal premium is 96 RON. About to check out MOBIL. So don't use Caltex Premium 96 ron which I have done once in the past.

I was talking about the ultimate and optimax not the regulare premium stuff.

From what i've heard they havew gone down/.

Hrmm.. have been told to stick with ultimate, reason includes optimax has been known to cause issues like pinging.. and that ultimate seems to be better for turbos and produce more consistence engine running output... and that is what I have only used since I had the car..

Tho a old but knowledgable dude at work (which drives a porshe 928) told me tat is bs and that all the brands buy fuel from each other.

So I duno wat to think.. tho I'm tempted to run a full tank of optimax to see what effect I will get.. Only after my next major service/tune.. another 2000k away. :P

I was using BP Ultimate but now run Optimax mainly due to the 4cent/litre coles discount and I pass a servo on the way to work that always has about the best price around (even before the 4cents off).

Couldn't really say that I notice any difference between the two fuels through the "seat of the pants" dyno.

The BP seems to run a bit cleaner. But that is just judging from the smell of the exhaust.

Starting using Optimax but now only use Ultimate cos I read somewhere, not sure whether it was this forum or another one, that Optimax is only 95, and they put some sort of additives in it to bring it up to 98...

Knowing my luck it is probably an urban myth, but must admit I get better mileage and performance outta the Ultimate....

BTW - lots of people here in Canberra call Optimax 'Crappymax'

    • Does it also misfire equally when revving?   Josh is very correct in what you should do. The coilpack harness wiring loom itself is a known problem due to its age and the number of heat cycles it has gone through. Throwing parts at a vehicle to diagnose the issue isn't a smart or good way to do it. Secondly, you may have a bad coil pack, you pop replacements in, they fix that issue, but messing with the harness breaks it, so the issue persists. So now you think "well it wasn't the coil packs" and have to continue chasing your tail, potentially swapping back in your shit coil packs and returning the good ones (yes, I've seen people do this because 'it wasn't the problem' and they want to save money). And suddenly, you've got two issues with the same symptoms...   Diagnose, don't use the spare parts shotgun.
