Hi .. Basically my questions are, when do i need to upgrade my oil cooler and radiator?? Mods are are, full exhaust, nistuned, fmic, all the basic mods + coilovers...Is it ok to upgrade my stock radiator now? Or stock is fine?? How bout oil cooler does it matter if i put one or not? Will it benifits my car having these 2 upgraded with my current set up?

it would benefit a stock car, so yeah do it if you can.

If its just a daily driver then in all honesty neither are really required at all and you are just burning money for no reason.

Basically daily, but here and there i do go to the strip.. So just ditch these 2 mods u reckon?? So when is it become necessary to upgrade It to these mods??

Upgrade when the factory stuff isnt performing properly.

The stock radiator if in good condition will cope with the track work with the stock Turbo setup, and it will cope perfectly for drag racing. Your only on the throttle for up to 14 seconds:) .

I track mine alot, and everything is fine, with the stock radiator.

I did throw an oil cooler in mind you, because i was in the USA and pieced it together there. Worked out very cheap. I have upgraded to a GT30 recently, so will be keeping a close watch on temps next time to see how they look.

Strip as in drag strip?

Definately no need. You are only running for 13 seconds or so. You won't get enough heat into anything to be of concern.

Upgrade when you need.

When do you need? When your temps start getting hot. They shouldn't be with your current setup at all. If they are then a good radiator flush should fix it :)

If you start circuit racing or whatever then a oil cooler is mandatory. But for street driving, stock turbo etc. No need at all.

Cheers... I know a lot of cars with mild mods , upgraded oil cooler, i guess it wont do anything bad.. Whats the ball park of an oil cooler this days?? And whats the common household name?

Mmmm, can also cause problems. I would only ever run an oil cooler with an inline thermostat. Lots of people run them without thermostats so it takes ages to get up to operating temperature, which increases motor wear and tear. So in my opinion, if you have a largely daily driven car using an oil cooler with no thermostat, you're doing more harm than good.

Any good Jap brand. Don't get Chinese. You're probably looking at $700 upwards for a new kit. Which is why if you don't really need it, don't waste the money on it.

You could also take a look at the Hel oil cooler kit which looks like some decent gear. Phil (PM-R33) did a group buy for these; though I doubt he will be doing another one based on how this one went: http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/topic/357901-hel-thermostatic-oil-cooler-kit-group-buy/

yeah my first skyline came with a proper braided line big row jap oil cooler. dunno if it had thermostat. was my daily. nos'd it everywhere and oil was f**kin sweet on change.

Oil is the primary cooling system of the motor, I would upgrade this before the radiator and would run quality lubricants and coolant products before bothering to change the stock rad OR adding an oil cooler.

As stated already, you really need to consider whats necessary based on what you use the car for.

Cheers guys, as i stated before, my oil temp went up pretty quickly if i had 5-10 runs ... I just had my rad flushed.. Oil temp seems to be stable now... I have stock gauges except boost..is it worth changing my gauges too??Which only read boost , oil temp, battery voltage..

My water temps have been hitting about 89c(its happened twice only, on cool days and easy driving too). On average its 78 - 82C. Ill give her a flush and see how she goes otherwise Ill be upgrading my radiator soon. Bare in mind, I do have aftermarket everything on a stock motor.

As others have said, until it dies or can't do what it should, don't change it.

Defi gauges.... 600 for something a $50 gauge can do. I know what I'll be choosing. Ive got some Auto Platonium gauges. Payed like $200 for a complete set plus holder and all senders. All gauges seem accurate enough.

No love for Defi's, they are so hot though :P

To compromise, I've got these:

Shadow Pro BF Series. I've got the smoked face (white illumination) on my A-Pillar and the white face (red illumination) in the triple gauge cluster. Read exactly the same as my tuners gauges so they are accurate enough for me. Not exactly cheap, just cheap compared to Defi's :P

The wonders of modern society - any stepper motor auto ranging gauge is as accurate as you could want and for $50-100 on ebay they are a bargain really. Defi are the pinnacle, but just too exe, you can buy 5 to 10 chinese ebay specials for the price of a Defi. And lately you can still do this and have the Defi name - yep, the china's have made defi copies/knock off's. Even the box they come in looks Defi.

    • Greg speaks wisdom. These dirty old Datsuns are only value when they are cheap. When they are not cheap, there is no value. Sounds contradictory, but it's true. We are now 20 years past the hey day of modifying cheap 90s JDM cars for small amounts of money. This is a different world. If you are rich and can afford not to care about what is effectively wasting money on an old Datto shitter, then I have no reason to argue against it. But if you are wanting to experience what we all experienced back in 2005 (and I bought my car last century!) then there is no way to do it.
    • Short answer: No. Medium answer: No, because you still need to conjure the things out of thin air to bolt them to a NA to make it a NA+T. Long Answer: No - The things you need to conjure - meaning a turbo, intercooling, manifolds, exhaust, intake/manifold/piping, clutch, injectors, fuel pump, AFM (?), ECU + Wiring (woo, N/A loom fun) have to come from somewhere. You could have many scavenged these things from an OEM car that someone had upgraded from and use some of these. This will be cost prohibitive now, especially so in the USA. You'd probably pay the same for newer, upgraded components that are better than old OEM stuff from 25-30 years ago. None of these big ticket items are re-usable for the N/A car. Why not buy new and upgrade while you're there? The only real consideration is turbo and fuel sizing and determining whether you want to stay within the bounds of the OEM engine or get into rebuild territory. These limits ARE lower with a N/A motor and especially N/A gearbox at the starting point. And if you're gonna upgrade those then you may as well consider having them built to begin with. Because everyone here knows you're never far from that next engine rebuild once you start making the power you want... The cars you see on the internet and SAU etc have been built over decades. If you're really clued in... you would sell your US car to somebody for what you paid for it. You would then scour AU JDM pages or SAU and buy a car like Dose's on this forum with your powerful American Dollar. This will save you so much money in the long term. Importing it could be tricky. Or it might not because USA. I have long said the only reason 90's Japanese stuff took off was because a) Japanese people had Japanese cars so that is what they used b) Australians could import these cars to Australia with very minimal changes and use them on the road here c) Neither country had well-priced access to US or EU Sports Cars. I don't believe the JDM scene would have taken off in Australia at all if we had EU priced EU BMW M offerings, or more especially the AUS V8 Scene would never have existed if we had the multitude of US cars like Camaros, Mustangs, Corvettes at the prices you folks do. After all - Do the math. I would say put a V8 in your R34 and that's the smart way forward. It is. I did it. I know this from my own experience. But at that point there's no reason to simply not buy a C5 or C6? It would be simpler and easier and cheaper and bette-
    • Reading all this... hurts lol. I have an ENR34 5MT and I paid an inflated USA price for the car alone, had to do tons of preventative maintenance past that, and so I'm over $30K USD into the car already and haven't even touched power.  I wanted to +t it. Not even trying to make GTR numbers, I'd be happy with 250hp.  Can I get away with paying much less to make that happen?
