How about any time your standard AFM maxxes out? Which is about (or a bit more than) 300 engine HP. You can go past the AFM max out point, but if you want to retain the ability to control the mapping, it's worth upgrading.

this, although its more like 300rwhp (varies from car to car obviously) than 300bhp

Thanks guys,

actually I am not sure what sticker is even on mine. might have to duck outside and have a gander.

Anyway i was aiming around the 250-280rwkw with Hyypergears ATR43 SS1.5 so i guess i will need one. Just out of interest are the the same physical specs as a stock gtst one as in would the mounting holes match up to the standard airbox. I need everything to look as much as standard as possible....

Ps: I forgot to ask, has anyone seen the aftermaket z32's on ebay (brand new)? any thoughts...

for example.......

hello

ECR33 AFM is 80mm and maxes around 220rwkw ish, some can do more, some less, but they all peak 5v around this level

VG30 AFM (or Z32 we call it) is 80mm and maxes around 400rwkw ish, some can do more, some less, but they all peak 5v around this level

both are a direct swap for the physical diameter and adapters but the wiring is different

ECR33 S2 is pink label 3 wire and VG30 is orange label 4 wire (extra ground wire)

there are also Z32 (really VG30 AFM's) fake on ebay so do not BUY fake ones

a legit Z32 brand new costs $350 ball park and comes in an orange BOSCH box

look at the pics of this page for a fake Z32

http://paulr33.com/techinfo/snipit.html

also Ive never seen "green" plastic based Z32s like that EBAY url you posted, they are knock offs or fakes or copies or shitters

cheers Paul, thanks for the heads up...

I often wonder about ebay copies and I would love to know what the green maxes out on though. would be an interested experiment

has any members bought something like this "a fake" and got some real testing from it like what was on Pauls URL above with maxe rekw & voltages?

That specific ebay one isnt a Z32...

It's a dead give away with how the ad is worded. Notice how it says "aftermarket Z32", as in - not original. No where does he say it is OEM/Genuine etc. The last line of his ad says "check other listing for genuine"

That's so he can cover his ass when you realise you've purchased a paper weight :)

His genuine ones are selling for $320 or there abouts.

that link states its an aftermarket replacement and to check his other listings for genuine stuff so theres nothing dodgy going on there.

alot of the older fake z32s worked fine in every way, they just maxxed out at much lower power levels than genuine ones.

if you end up getting one a cheap solution for the plug is to get a rb30 afm plug as they're the same.

Pfff do not be telling people that fake Z32 AFMs are any good. They are not.

We are talking about a extremely sensitive and critical component of the fuel system here... "she'll be right" doesn't cut it!

It's not just about "peak power" there are many other factors at play here not least of which is consistency & reliability

Of course if it's just for your fully sik drift car with lots of go-fast stickers on the side then go for it! :D

agree the AFM is not something that should be mucked around with

its one of the key sensors the engine uses for engine management

why do you think it rev caps at 2500rpm as a failsafe when the AFM is mangled, failed or unplugged

cos its not safe to run with a mangled one or non-working one

Chinese copy Z32 AFMs are an absolute pain. They don't measure anything like the genuine item and will cost more in tuning time than what its worth

Nistune Z32 AFM forums link

Declan from Garage 7 shows on his website the internal differences of the Z32 AFM copy and changes in mapping here

    • Thanks for doing that Duncan! Makes you a good person in my books. We don't get kangaroos or wombats here. But we have bats and it's similar. AFAIK it's often the mums with a baby attached that get hit because they drop lower when starting from a tree. If you hit an animal, check on it. https://www.ifaw.org/au/resources/wildlife-rescue-app An app to get the closest wildlife rescue contact.
    • My dream is also to have a proper hoist, but I don't think it will ever happen. My quickjack is probably as close as I'll ever get, it really is very good though.
    • Yeah we keep on in the dailies, it is pretty poor how many animals get hit and the driver leaves without checking....have saved a couple of little ones over the years. Bit of a gruesome job though, pouches generally need to be cut open because they are so tight and often the joey doesn't realise mum is gone so they are still locked onto the teat. I checked the modules in front of the DS wheel where an oil cooler should go.... There is the radar unit - that can go for race use) One of the 2 HX water pumps, the silver cylinder. That needs to be kept but might be able to be relocated But the bad news, the big computer mounted vertically in front of the wheel (blocking any potential air exit) is the electric steering computer. That is required until/unless i do a hydraulic steering conversion, and in CAD based modern car design it is not like I can just pop a big unit like that somewhere else (plus the loom would be too short anywhere else too). So, the passenger side is OK to clear out (just use a smaller washer reservoir, potentially elsewhere), but the DS no beuno
    • Well, all the best with the new camry It was interesting to hear about the UK process, it is generally a lot more streamlined here with a shipping agent looking after all the import side (noting the exact final price can still be a surprise.....) and I've used a few different brokers on the japan (or US) side, and never had any trouble with any of them....luck of the draw I guess. You mentioned you didn't get the auction sheet (understandable since you bought it from a dealer, not auction), but I always try and get hold of that because they are pretty thorough. I've imported 2x R grade vehicles over the years and both were fine, repairs in Japan are pretty thorough compared to here in Oz.
    • BTW I measured the jack I have, it is 70mm at the saddle but you only have about 700 until it returns to 150mm high at the cylinder so it is good but no magic bullet.
