I bought the 5in Venom cat and had it welded in (no flanges) as I am not planning to remove it. I have a 3in system looking for about 300 -330kw from my RB30. We need a cat for low volume certification these days but the certifiers do not do comprehensive exhaust gas analysis - I suspect these 100 cell metal cats would not pass - would be interested if anyone has been through a test with one.

whats the point in spending all that money and running a high flow cat if it doesnt meet emissions? seriously, just bolt in a standard cat when you have an inspection then spend $50 and get a decat.

recon a minimum of 300 cells for emmissions and get it as close to the turbo as possible, can change it to a 100 cell if you want when you get your certificate for the engine

The point is to avoid a $10k fine if you get caught without a cat at all. Compared to a $200 outlay of a 100cell hiflow cat that will provide almost no restriction. You cannot get a fine for having a cat that probably wont meet emissions standards (100 cell cat).

i dont have a stock system and its on a vl so the whole exhaust is custom made

It all depends on the impact of you failing. If it costs nothing and you can go again later sure try the hiflow cat but if it costs you or you failing causes you to loose rego then you should definitely fit a 300 cell cat and then change afterwards.

Show me proof that anyone here or elsewhere in AU has been fined the full amount of 10K for not running a cat converter.

Why run the risk of a fine for no cat?? To save $200 and 2-3kw?

Yes I also have said multiple times in this thread to run a standard cat to pass the emissions test. I was suggesting changing to a hiflow 100 cell cat after the emissions test.

You may not be aware but in Sydney they often have defect stations. Little outposts setup by police where police will pull import cars and other cars on the street into these stations, put them on a hoist and defect everything not standard.

Here in SA, you only need the one defect to be sent for a full inspection (can be a few things like noise etc) and then fined just for being defected

I don't think you understood what I meant. These are EPA setup stations. Police bring in drivers, EPA pulls out the book for your car and gets you down for everything not standard. You will cop a fine for running a cat not meeting standards, not a fine for running NO CAT at all. That is the difference. Its a grey area. They have hoists to get cars up. Ive seen one setup on james ruse drive near rose hill. Not a pretty site.

dont count on it being that way for much longer. . .usually what happens in the east makes it way here to W.A (aka Wait Awhile) eventually

it's all good arguing about this on a internet forum but know one here can give you a straight answer (or at least the one you're looking for) so email venom an see what they say. :thumbsup:

george told me my best bet would be a factory BF xr6turbo cat for the emissions test. then change it over down the track.however after talkignt o him a bit more any 200cell plus cat should do the job as long as its ceramic. so im thinking going the catco ceramic cat and then putting my decat back in after the test.

I understand you now, drive around with a decat pipe, if you get pulled over and cop a defect then put a factory cat back in when you go in for an inspection.

What about this scenario:

Car accident where the car is undriveable and the insurance people come and do an inspection of the car. They could argue that your car is not roadworthy and therefore not covered by insurance.

    • My guesstimate, with no real numbers to back it up, is it won't effect it greatly at all.its not a huge change in position, and I can't see the air flow changing from in turbulence that much based on distance, and what's in front of it. Johnny and Brad may have some more numbers to share from experience though.
    • Which solenoid? Why was it changed? Again, why was this done? ...well, these wear..but ultimately, why was it changed? Did you reset the idle voltage level after fitment? I'm just a tad confused ~ the flash code doesn't allude to these items being faulty, so in my mind the only reason to change these things, would be some drive-ability issue....and if that's the case, what was the problem? Those questions aside, check if the dropping resistor is OK ...should be 11~14 ohms (TCU doesn't throw a flash code for this) ~ also, these TCU designs have full time power (to keep fault code RAM alive), and I think that'll throw a logic code (as opposed to the 10 hardware codes), if that power is missing (or the ram has gone bad in the TCU, which you can check..but that's another story here perhaps).
    • Question for people who "know stuff" I am looking at doing the new intake like the one in the picture (the pictured is designed for the OEM TB and intake plenum), this design has the filter behind the front bar, but, the filter sits where the OEM duct heads into the front bar, and the standard aperture when the OEM ducting is removed allows the filter to pulled back out of the front bar into the engine bay for servicing, a simple blanking plate is used to seal the aperture behind the filter This will require a 45° silicone hose from the TB, like the alloy pipe that is currently there, to another 45° silicone hose to get a straight run to the aperture in the front bar Question: how will it effect the tune if I move the MAF about 100-150mm forward, the red is around where my MAF is currently, and the green would be where it would end up Like this This is the hole the filter goes through  Ends up like this LOL..Cheers    
    • Despite the level up question, actually I do know what that is....it is a pressure sender wire.  So check out around the oil filter for an oil pressure sender, or maybe fuel pressure near the filter or on the engine. Possibly but less likely coolant pressure sensor because they tend to be combined temp/pressure senders if you have one. Could also be brake pressure (in a brake line somewhere pre ABS) but maybe I'm the only one that has that on a skyline.
