Does it need to make that clicking noise when revving on idle to ensure it is working?

If the solenoid isn't clicking, then it obviously isn't moving and hence it isn't working.

Isn't that fairly obvious lol?

Hello there,

I have an RB25 with Z32ECU+Nistune.

The Z32ECU activates VCT by (engine)load, not RPM, however you can change this by

changing parameters in Nistune.

Look at what I (User: Torque)wrote here:

http://forum.nistune.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=2125

This is tried tested and proven...

However despite Z32 giving the VCT-Signal, I think VCT is not working on my car.

Judging from my Dyno, I lost about 100NM ar 3000rpm.

Also the car is like a slug at low RPM.

I will (tonite) test if my solenoid is working by applying GND to the selenoid itself.

How did you get on with the issue at your side?

Torque's try disconnecting it and go for a drive, then power it up and go for a drive, see if there is a difference.

I read ur thread on nistune a while back. I am just about to tune my rb25 in r32 with z32 ecu but my car doesnt have a speedo so im not sure if i can get vtc to work

When I put my clutch it and just TOUCH my throttle and hold it, I can hear a click, in a gear, stationary. When I lift my foot off the throttle, it clicks again. RPM doesn't matter, even at 800rpm I can hear a click, when its in gear and clutched in the click when release the throttle. Is this the VCT thing? Just wondering because I have NFI what it is. Doesn't do it in neutral. Power FC.

Have you considered just getting an R32 speedo head and connecting it to a speedo drive cable (and gearbox obviously) and electrically to the ECU and then hiding it somewhere, so it does what it is supposed to do for the ECU?

You'd need to do the Navara speedo drive mod for the RB25 gearbox of course, but that's no biggie.

this is how i tested mine and its very simple if u drive it and it is faulty u will notice a huge power difference between it being plug in and unplugged mine also was leaking oil out of the plug.

i ordered the navara speedo drive from nissan this morning, $65 retail part number is 32702 - 02G17

i havent checked to see if it requires a neutral switch yet.

You can, when you set up the minimum speed for activation to ZERO.

If you have questions let me know.

As for my VCT, I tested it yesterday by connecting a light bulb to the solenoid.

Sadly it worked ;)

Also I activated the solenoid manually (by applying a voltage to it)

(It clicked and then the valve train rattled a bit, also rpm went down)

I have to say that I have Poncams, and these might just work as if VCT was on most of the time.

(more overlap)

Anyhow, I will find out what's wrong.

    • Hi everyone, I've been wrestling with this for a while now and have been trying to find out the cause. For context, the turbos used are Garrett 2860 -5s, the BOV is a BNR32 HKS SSQV IV kit, the car is currently tuned to ~470 whp on 17.5 psi. The car drives normally, pulls well when it doesn't happen, and I can replicate it fairly easily. It does not sound like turbo shuffle or flutter. The engine has only a thousand or so miles and has had this behavior since it was completed. After my engine was built for my R32 GTR, I noticed that the car now sometimes makes an air discharge sound on what appears to be positive boost pressure that sounds really similar to a BOV. I had thought that it was a BOV issue but even when replacing it with a brand new unit, the sound persisted. It seems like it's coming from the passenger side but I may be mistaken. The closest scenario I could find was this post here https://www.gtr.co.uk/threads/maybe-a-boost-leak-opinions.147955/https://www.gtr.co.uk/threads/maybe-a-boost-leak-opinions.147955/ started by @yakshii and it sounds very similar. As in, at partial throttle once I reach positive boost I begin to hear the same psh psh psh psh psh sound like air is leaking somewhere when I keep the throttle in the same position. It most commonly happens in 4th gear at around 3-3.5k RPM and 5th gear around 2.5-3k RPM, which seems to coincide with normal positive boost thresholds. It might be similar to what @Austrian GTR mentioned about his own HKS SSQV. Notable difference would be that when he applies more throttle when it happens, it stops. In my scenario if I apply more throttle during this repeated psh psh psh sound, the cadence of the sound gets faster and louder rather than stopping. If I lift off slightly and apply throttle again, it will normally stop and pull without issue. I've checked all rubber couplers to ensure that they are tight, but have not gotten the opportunity to properly do a pressurized boost leak test. If anyone has had similar experiences or thoughts on what might be the cause, I'd be very keen to hear them. I also have a video of it happening from inside the cabin, if that would make it easier to understand: https://youtu.be/2zqZXcx8jbA
    • I'd want at least $40K for mine, but thats easy to say cos I'm not selling anyway.
