... yes you're right there were the 2 models of hard top XA & XB that preceded the XC COBRA ... & yes you've only got to spend a minute or two checking out Terry Ashwoods Windfield R32 Race Car to realize the reworking that is involved at level of motorsport ... as far as the V8 Supercars are concerned I doubt that a single piece of them could be found on a production model ... the performance engines are shipped in from Ford USA & Chevrolet USA racing devisions & just about everything else is purpose built the same for both cars ... i must admit they're awesome cars ... I've been lucky to enough to drive one of the actual comp cars (not one of the put out to pasture hot lappers) it was an amazing experience ... the whole car is like one highly engineered "roll cage / capsule" on wheels ... incredibly strong & as safe as you'd want it in a 160kph+ smash ... I just wish there was a production car race still ... if they can do it for the Porsches & utes ??? ... oh well one day again maybe ... :)...

Both engines are built in aus. The hms engine is pretty much a copy of the ford etc etc

... no doubt built/assembled here but sourced from the USA & CANADA ... :) ..

That's my problem ATM. My logic tells me to sell the piece of metal in the driveway that will get me ahead in life with the cash and not spending money.

Then I see my phones wallpaper/go for drive and really can't imagine returning selling it cause I'm pretty happy with all my mods I've done

Like I said pretty much the same as a d3 headed ford. About the only difference is the engine mount location and exhaust manifold flange pattern

Then I see my phones wallpaper/go for drive and really can't imagine returning selling it cause I'm pretty happy with all my mods I've done

... for most of us our cars are like a passionate hobby ... & it's important to have these things in life ... my car is like therapy for me ... I could sell it too & do something else with the money but I'd be a cranky miserable old f***er ... don't underestimate the healthy & positive side to having a passionate hobby ... anything that puts a genuine smile on your face is a good thing ... I suggest hanging onto it ... all money is the same & you can always earn & save more money ... but your car is as individual as you are ... logic tells me that a healthy activity that brings you happiness is as every bit important as cash in the bank ... & you sure can't take a "share portfolio" for a drive to the Blue Mountains with a hot chick for a picnic ... :) ...

Hell I just went and bought a cheap car to play with because it is more fun, and not so scared about scratching it.

But dont ever turn into one of those people you see at car shows with a 50k paint job and a shiny engine bay, but their kids have no shoes and torn track pants that are too small

... damn !! & thought the no shoes & too small vinnies ripped track pants look was coming back in ?? ... :) ...

... my cars clean alright ... & I havnt spent big money on it for years ... I get around that by driving a 31 year old hilux ute i paid 1900 bucks for & don't have any kids ! ... :) ...

... if I had plenty of dosh id love an ORIGINAL Torana GTR XU1 or SLR500 just for the nostalgia ... my dad who is so not the the car man had a brand new early 70's LC Torana 2 door 2850cc straight six ... man that thing was a rocket !!! ... :) ...

Saw an XU1 Torana on Old Windsor road the other day, sounded fantastic!

i'm so over soarers though, its an electrical nightmare.

i'll be going an evo vi after i sell off the soarer. the GTT does feel slow in stock trim though. =(

seriously though there's no reason why you can't have both your hobbies & saving for the future if you budget right & live within your means. You only live once so enjoy yourself today but think of tomorrow I say

... especially the bit about the Commodore & Godzilla ... comparing 6.0Lt RWD Auto V8's to 2.6Lt Attessa equipped twin turbo S6's is silly ... yes theyre both cars with 4 wheels a roof a boot & a bonnet but thats about where the similarities end ... i dont hate Holdens my first car was a Holden ... its just that for me they just dont have the qualities that i look for in a "driving experience" ... also call me old fashioned but the one thing that SS Commodores & FTV Falcons have that i would never accept in a million years in my "driving experience" is a "sporty" car with 4 doors ... correct me if im wrong but i cant think of anywhere else in the world that would badge an SS (super sport) or GT (grand touring / gran turismo) vehicle that has 4 doors ?! ... 2 door coupes naturally evolved for the sporting motorist because they behave better on the road as they are more compact lighter & more rigid ...

... but to be fair Holden has had the Monaro in its stables since the 1960's ... unfortunatley Ford USA saw Australia as such a small market it wouldnt "tool up" the Ford Plant here for a Falcon coupe even though they had a 2 door version of their own ... thats why the 1968 XT Falcon GT had 4 doors & by default so did the 1972 Falcon GTHO Phase 3 & every Falcon GT or FPV since (excepting the XC Cobra) ... the new Holden & Ford top end "sporty spaceships" like the Clubsport & GT BOSS are more muscle than sport in my opinion that cater perfectly to the V8 Supercar crowd of which there are hundreds of thousands which makes for good business i guess ...

... pity that the die hard supporters of V8 Supercars who would mortgage their house on the back of their beloved race series & car manufacturer to own a Clubsport or Boss dont realise or wont believe that the cars zooming around Mount Panorama arent Holdens or Fords but $800,000 purpose built race cars that "look" like Commodores & Falcons & they even share a lot of identical parts from Hollinger gearboxes to spool diffs to Alcon ferrous brakes ... Bathurst was so much better when there were all sorts of car makes in the field ...those were the days there was something special about the event ...

... ive had my Skyline for 10 years now & i still "get that smile" every time i drive it & still sometimes sneak out in it by myself for a mid week nightime spurt up to Gosford or down to Wollongong just for something to do ... i cant imagine ever selling it ...

But what driving level are you at?

A SS will beat a gtr around anything if the driver isn't very experienced in cornering (like myself haha).

A SS is fast on the straight as talked about so if you can't utilize the benefits of the gtr ofcoarse the SS will be faster.

There's way to many factors in this reply to suggest the SS is a faster car, if that was intended.

Of course it is the faster car...just have a look a the 3e production race results for the last few years

Its Evo IX and X up front, followed by the HSV's then everything else 90% of the time,

Duncan's car is well sorted and is quick (its an N1 btw) Mid corner speed he is a bit quicker and corner exit out of tight corners having 4wd helps.

But are you guys that Naive to think that the current commodores can't be punted round a track rather quickly?

    • Next on the to-do list was an oil and filter change. Nothing exciting to add here except the oil filter is in a really stupid place (facing the engine mount/subframe/steering rack). GReddy do a relocation kit which puts it towards the gearbox, I would have preferred towards the front but there's obviously a lot more stuff there. Something I'll have to look at for the next service perhaps. First time using Valvoline oil, although I can't see it being any different to most other brands Nice... The oil filter location... At least the subframe wont rust any time soon I picked up a genuine fuel filter, this is part of the fuel pump assembly inside the fuel tank. Access can be found underneath the rear seat, you'll see this triangular cover Remove the 3x plastic 10mm nuts and lift the cover up, pushing the rubber grommet through The yellow fuel line clips push out in opposite directions, remove these completely. The two moulded fuel lines can now pull upwards to disconnect, along with the wire electrical plug. There's 8x 8mm bolts that secure the black retaining ring. The fuel pump assembly is now ready to lift out. Be mindful of the fuel hose on the side, the hose clamp on mine was catching the hose preventing it from lifting up The fuel pump/filter has an upper and lower section held on by 4 pressure clips. These did take a little bit of force, it sounded like the plastic tabs were going to break but they didn't (don't worry!) The lower section helps mount the fuel pump, there's a circular rubber gasket/grommet/seal thing on the bottom where the sock is. Undo the hose clip on the short fuel hose on the side to disconnect it from the 3 way distribution pipe to be able to lift the upper half away. Don't forget to unplug the fuel pump too! There's a few rubber O rings that will need transferring to the new filter housing, I show these in the video at the bottom of this write up. Reassembly is the reverse Here's a photo of the new filter installed, you'll be able to see where the tabs are more clearing against the yellow OEM plastic Once the assembly is re-installed, I turned the engine over a few times to help build up fuel pressure. I did panic when the car stopped turning over but I could hear the fuel pump making a noise. It eventually started and has been fine since.     • It was picked up on the MOT/Inspection that the offside front wheel bearing had excessive play along with the ball joint. It made sense to do both sides so I sourced a pair of spare IS200 hubs to do the swap. Unfortunately I don't have any photos of the strip down but here's a quick run down. On the back of the hub is a large circular dust cover, using a flat head screw driver and a mallet I prised it off. Underneath will reveal a 32mm hub nut (impact gun recommended). With the hub nut removed the ABS ring can be removed (I ended up using a magnetic pick up tool to help). Next up is to remove the stub axle, this was a little trickier due to limited tools. I tried a 3 leg puller but the gap between the hub and stub axle wasn't enough for the legs to get in and under. Next option was a lump hammer and someone pulling the stub axle at the same time. After a few heavy hits it released. The lower bearing race had seized itself onto the stub axle, which was fine because I was replacing them anyway. With the upper bearing race removed and the grease cleaned off they looked like this The left one looked pristine inside but gave us the most trouble. The right one had some surface rust but came apart in a single hit, figure that out?! I got a local garage to press the new wheel bearings in, reassemble was the opposite and didn't take long at all. Removing the hub itself was simple. Starting with removing the brake caliper, 2x 14mm bolts for the caliper slider and 2x 19mm? for the carrier > hub bolts. I used a cable tie to secure the caliper to the upper arm so it was out of the way, there's a 10mm bolt securing the ABS sensor on. With the brake disc removed from the hub next are the three castle nuts for the upper and lower ball joints and track rod end. Two of these had their own R clip and one split pin. A few hits with the hammer and they're released (I left the castle nuts on by a couple of turns), the track rod ends gave me the most grief and I may have nipped the boots (oops). Fitting is the reversal and is very quick and easy to do. The lower ball joints are held onto the hub by 2x 17mm bolts. The castle nut did increase in socket size to 22mm from memory (this may vary from supplier) The two front tyres weren't in great condition, so I had those replaced with some budget tyres for the time being. I'll be replacing the wheels and tyres in the future, this was to get me on the road without the worry of the police hassling me.
