Always a fun and rewarding experience fixing up a car to get it just the way you like. And nice number plates Bob what colour and type did you end up going with ? Here are the plates... I wanted 5 digit plates so I could trim them down to fit inside the JDM holders. Old style Black with white lettering. One off fee plus $90.00 per year.

As we all know, the normal plates are 7 mm too wide but if you trim too far you start going close to touching one of the digits.

In the old days, 5 digit plates were narrower than 6. That's not the case today. All plates are 372mm wide, they just space out the digits further. You can see how much extra room is available for trimming at the ends.......

I have some NOS Altrex (old Style) 5 digit plate holders which I'll use and just trim down the plates to fit. This way, the plates and holders will fit perfectly into the number plate fixing cavity.

Should be a good fit. I'll post them up once done.

Really nice looking plates Bob. With mine I only had to use a rubber mallet to slightly smack in the sides of the plate and they just barely fit in the rear. For the front I just made up a bracket to bring them forward a little. I wanted to avoid having to cut them so I can refit them to a Honda civic one day :P

I don't understand getting plates that just re-iterate what's already written on the car in three or four other places ie the badges.

You would get a fine if the boys from the chaser saw it..

Update.........

My plates arrived and I collected them yesterday.

The RTA website is wrong......... 5 digit plates are still the narrower version so no trimming is required. I think they look the best on a 20 year old car.

Nice one Bob. Obviously even for the hundreds we pay to MyPlates every year they still can't render the preview properly to give you an accurate representation of what you're getting.

My plates arrived looking more like a mustard colour but were supposed to be "gold". Fortunately I don't mind the look.

Yeah but without any competition my plates can do whatever the puck they want and still make money for old rope, I'm not saying badge plates are wanker plates, that would be ironic seeing how wanky mine must look to some people but I just dont get it.'

You little boys and your toys. If you don't have any mechanical knowledge at all or have only driven a hyundai before you'll never know what to look for in a high"ish" performance machine when purchasing. There are so many systems on a 20 year old gtr to consider. Don't get one from Blacktown for starters! Come on man use ya brain. Import from those tidy little bastards over there. Un-molested,clean and hopefully rust free. They ARE an old car but,shit, for just over 20k your gonna smash any other ride that could pick up for that $$. Use your melon and be patient. Stay away from s**t that's been "rebuilt". Your getting into trouble straight away unless NISMO built it!! And leave the thing alone unless you are a mechanic stop doing the dodgy s**t to these cars if ya don't know what ya doing!!! Don't get one if ya don't have some $$ in the bank either, they aint cheap to maintain properly with good quality gear. STOP DREAMING!!!

just for some perspective i recently picked up my JDM 32 gtr for $15800 78267 kms on the original cluster with all aussie history bought it off the first aussie owner needs a few small things (badges door trims replaced few small scratches replace front intercooler mesh)but appart from that its performing very well ate putty road for breakfast the other day :)

I think there is some good perspective in your bitch comments, but "little boys and their toys"...? and "Dreaming" ? ( You got a face slap or limp wrist to go with that?) Makes me think youve been on Oxford Street for some time "dreaming" about "little boys and their toys"...more so than any good info you have about cars.... If you want to be real, Id agree cars cost money, nothing is cheep or perfect, so thanks for stating the obvious. These threads are for ppl to share ideas and info, stating the obvious really isnt helpful especially with your Bitch attitude/nature. Stick to your boys and their toys and stay away from cars would be my advice to you, then again, guess im also stating the obvious...

To be honest with you I couldn't really understand what this jibberer was on about!

Anyway........As is already documented within this topic, I've bought a JDM R32 GT-R which I'm restoring to a reasonably high standard. It's at my trimmers until tomorrow and the goes into the panel shop on Monday to have a fair bit done.

I intend to post up before and after pics plus a direct comparison with the ADM.

    • Can't you put the pistons to TDC and then do the valve seals? Or will the drop down too far to pull them back up?
    • One thing I can tell you is, do it properly the first time. If you encounter unexpected problems just let the car sit for a week or two if you have to get some other parts or figure stuff out.  I'd have said go and use as many OEM parts as possible but since you want to change the turbo later on a custom kit is probably the better choice. Since I have no experience with RB25 just compare parts diagrams and images before buying a line kit and it should be easy to see if it has everything you need. Amayama has very good parts diagrams and part number lists, that is what I used a bunch to figure out what I might need. And don't forget to plan ahead and possibly renew other stuff that's easy to get to while you're in there doing the turbo lines. Happy wrenching
    • Update 4:   Hi all, good news. Engine is running and all the gaskets and seals seem to be working as intended. No leaks so far, even the JB Weld seems to hold. I flushed out the old coolant a few times and put in fresh coolant, not Nissan stuff, I decided to try the Ravenol Protect FL22, they claim it works for a wide variety of JDM cars and the opinions on it by some people were pretty good. And it has the nice poison green color! And man am I glad I bought a coolant system tester earlier this year, vacuum filling works wonders on this engine. I can definitely recommend this to anyone still doing it the old school way. All you need is compressed air supply. Will have to do a small test drive as soon as I can, I removed the gauge cluster again as the tacho needle was still bouncing around a bit but it was much better than before already.  I also found some cracks on all 4 tires inner and outer sidewalls. Apparently these tires should 't be parked on for extended periods or be kept under 0 degrees during storage, which I did not know. Clearly the previous owner didn't look into those details either, he probably bought them just cause they are cool semi-slicks. I'm just wondering how tf I am supposed to reach 30-80 degree tire temperatures on the public road consistenly, these tires were never going to work for my use case. I'll probably order Continental SportContact7 ones as these are the best allround summer tire available right now and I don't think I'll need anything crazier for now. Do let me know if you have experience with various tires and which ones you recommend.

    • Not going to pretend I didn't do a bit of junky work this time around, but mostly due to the fact that some things I am not willing to spend days fixing right now, like wiring. I try to do most things properly the first time around.
