Hi lads, and lad'ettes!

I'm new to buy cars privately, as i've always gone through dealers. But have found the perfect car down to a T, Through a private seller. I've searched the internet for some sort of guide, or "steps" and gotten no joy. Could somebody with experience in this matter please help me out? I'm aware of REVS checks, and RWCs. Done both of those, maybe just a quick guide on what steps I should take, what forms need to be filled out and exchanged, and which method of payment is best (-20 man points to anyone who says paypal). I expect the seller will know what to do etc, but i'd rather know for myself so I know 100% nothing dodgy is going down! blink.gif

Really appreciate any help guys. I tried to search the forums but it kept telling me one or more of my words was invalid in shiny red writing sad.gif

Cheers guys,

Vehicle transfer of ownership form - seller will provide, both sign and take 1 each.

No need RWC in WA.

I'd say anything over 5k - bank cheque.

If you want, you can get them to write you a basic receipt stating car make/model/numberplate/vin etc, received payment of xxxx, signed seller and buyer, dated.

I had a basic contract drafted and signed up...unfortunately there's no set way to do it as even the car's rego doesn't mean it is necessarily the owner. I guess the basic rule of thumb is don't hand over any money until the car is sighted and the keys are in your hand :)

This.

I sold a car with money owing on it, I wrote out that there was money owing on it but would be cleared ASAP using the money taken for the car, and had me, the buyer & a witness sign it. I let the guy know when I payed out the loan, and 5 days or so later the encumbrance was removed.

When I bought a car with money owing on it, the seller told me roughly how much it was, and when I agreed to buy it he called and got the exact amount. To pay for it I got 2 bank cheques (commonwealth), one stating the loan number of the finance company for the amount he told me, the rest totaling up to the price in his name. That way he couldn't just cash the full amount to himself (if a seller is going to get dodgy). It was the same as when I sold, a week or so after I collected the car when I did a revs check it showed nothing owing on it. I did have it written and signed for that the amount he said was true & it would be paid in full, best to be safe when it comes to money!

This might not have much to do with your situation, but just putting this up in case anyone else needs to know :)

Appreciate all the responses guys! REVS check has been completed, no money owing etc etc. Got myself a little certificate too :P Looks like I have all the info I need now thank you all kindly, if there's anything else to conside please let me know!

Make sure you obtain a Notification of Change of Ownership form (MR9)

http://www.transport.wa.gov.au/mediaFiles/LBU_F_VL_MR9_VehicleTransfer.pdf

On this form, list down the selling/purchase price as whatever it is, and the dutiable value (market value). Also make sure you tick the box that states the vehicle is fitted with a factory fitted/govt approved immobiliser (if it is).

Each party takes one copy of the form. Photocopy your copy of the form and submit the original to the Dept of Transport. Within 1-3weeks you will receive a transfer invoice for stamp duty (vehicle licence duty) in the post. If not received within 3weeks call 13 11 56 to confirm the car has been transferred into your name.

Regarding payment, I would be paying by bank cheque. I've always used & accepted this form of payment.

The form you posted is an acceptable form of receipt, right?

can be but i still get them to write one out (or have one typed up that they fill in the details for) just in case. i have got all my cars from private sellers so far and have yet to have any trouble however make sure you cover all your bases.

K-mart tyre n auto does a free inspection, some of them can be quite fussy and give you crap if its pre purchase, but most of them have been quite happy to check mine out for me.

I'm not entirely too sure if its as thorough as something like RAC's check, but its free!

good luck :)

Definitely worth getting an inspection if you're no mechanic yourself.

I've used this guy before:

http://www.a1autocheck.com.au/

He's VERY thorough. He'll usually call after the inspection and give you the low down - he'll then follow up with a pdf report.

I've attached a report from a R33 that he inspected.

The guy is very objective with his feedback.

    • It would be different if the sealant hadn't started to peel up with gaps in the glue about ~6cm and bigger in some areas. I would much prefer not having to do the work take them off the car . However, the filler the owner put in the roof rack mount cavities has shrunk and begun to crack on the rail delete panels. I cant trust that to hold off moisture ingress especially where I live. Not only that but I have faded paint on as well as on either side of these panels, so they would need to come off to give the roofline a proper respray. My goal is to get in there and put a healthy amount of epoxy instead of panel filler/bog and potentially skin with carbon fiber. I have 2 spare rolls from an old motorcycle fairing project from a few years back and I think it'd be a nice touch on a black stag.  I've seen some threads where people replace their roof rack delete with a welded in sheet metal part. But has anyone re-worked the roof rails themselves? It seems like there is a lot of volume there to add in some threads and maybe a keyway for a quick(er) release roof rack system. Not afraid to mill something out if I have to. It would be cool to have a cross bar only setup. That way I can keep the sleek roofline that would accept a couple bolts to gain back that extra utility  3D print some snazzy covers to hide the threaded section to be thorough and keep things covered when not using the rack.
    • Probably not. A workshop grade scantool is my go to for proper Consult interrogation. Any workshop grade tool should do it. Just go to a workshop.
    • In my head it does make sense to be a fuel problem since that is what I touched when cleaning the system. When I was testing with the fuel pressure gauge, the pressure was constantly 2.5 bar with the FPR vacuum removed. When stalling, the pressure was going up to 3.0 bar (which is how it should be on ignition).
    • ECUtalk pages don't mention they support the ABS computer (consult port has more than one CAN), so you might just need a different scan tool. But, I would expect ABS is a different light to the brake warning/handbrake light, do you see an ABS light come on for a few seconds when you turn the key from ACC to IGN? But since you said: I'd have a look at the ABS sensors in the rear hubs to make sure they are not damaged, disconnected etc.
    • OK, if it idles at 1000+ with the AAC, its not an idle airflow problem. The cold start valve just gives extra air when the engine is cold, but you have enough air without it to idle at 1000. I think you are back to a fuel problem, sorry. Can you see the fuel pressure staying constant or does it drop as the revs drop to a stall?
