As some of you may be aware, my cars rear brakes have been squealing like crazy. It had the standard rotors running standard pads. So I removed the pads and got the rotors machined and fitted the QFM HPX pads. Problem still there after bedding in. I put some of that brake noise shit on the shims, the noise is still there. I removed those brake pads and put some other bendix pads on. The noise is still there but much quieter, but still there. I bought new rotors with new pads and put that noise reduction shit on it, ITS STILL f**kING THERE and YES it is the rear pads and mainly the rear passenger side. The new rotors are the DBA 4000 slotted rotors. What the f**k else could it be? The noise mostly occurs when at slower speeds but when I heat them up it can occur at any lower end speed with firm braking.

Everything has been changed using new parts, fresh parts, trying different combos. Could the hub not be spinning perfectly flat? Could the caliper be failing? I don't have to use any excess pressure to brake, as soon as I find that point it makes noise, I can hold that noise until the car completely stops. Its embarrassing.

The front seems to have shutted up. I had slotted rotors which are no longer slotted thanks to machining. 3 different brake pads, 2 different rotors and the noise is still here. I'm considering either buying a full set of Ksport or D2 or some other generic brand and fitting those all round, or setting the car on fire. Seriously this noise is killing my ears.

nfi some red silicone looking shit. Also on one set of the pads there is a soft dampening pad between the metal shims which also has this red stuff on it. Note the car makes the same noise with or without this stuff. Also when turning the rear wheel when it is off the ground, I can hear no noise at one point then at one point there is the sound of friction. This tells me that something is not sitting straight. If it was the pads, it would be noise all the way around....

Ive had similar brakes squeal issues, I got this response from gslrally whi sell QFM, DBA and RDA products

What I'd recommend would be a stick on shim kit, the abobroad minded persone best being the Project Mu one:

http://project-mu.co...other_shim.html

We sell a stack of these to suit the 4/2 pot Nissan calipers, and are the only thing that seems to fix the noise. They're $65 for the front set, and $55 for the rear set. If you were to get these, probably best to get a new set of pads so you get maximum use out of the shim.

Did you try the shims? I got a set on my front but the noise is now from the back(it was from all 4 before...). This is f**ked. My old car had the same setup of rotors, slotted front standard rear, with endless pads and it NEVER EVER SQUEALED!

Were the/have you chamfered the edges of the pads? 9/10 times on customers cars I find this fixes the problem.....

You have to realize your using high-performance gear, designed to disperse heat easily, take long hard braking repeatedly and do it time after time. Slowing down from 50 on the street for an intersection doesn't get the heat the brakes need to operate well, and quietly.

Does the noise go away if you hold the pedal at say 100km/h until the brakes are hot?

If you don't believe this is your problem, or have already tried it, have you checked that when you re-fit the pads, the factory shims/pins/anti-rattle gear isn't coming close to the rotor, then interfering under braking?

the brake shims solved my problem! I had sqeeling rear brakes as I changed to rda slotted rotors and qfm hpx pads. They would only squeel when I got a fair bit of heat into them. I also chamfered the edges so that probably helped a bit too. but definitly go the project mu shims. not too pricey either.

if you havent tried - maybe an "on car" brake machine might help take some of the squeal out, I had that done after an off car machining of the rotors didnt do shite, every bit of braking squealed, bad brake shudder too. now, only the slightest squeal after a rainy day

plus i put a shitload of brake pad grease on the back of the pad, and inbetween each of the metal plates behind.

I'm going to give them a good bedding in. I really don't know why they are this loud but some people are saying I'm not getting enough heat into them and they maybe right. Its pretty embarrassing trying to bed squealing brakes on suburban roads...

I'm going to do 6 100km/h to 10km/h medium to hard then 3 hard to 5km from 100km. If no luck, ill get some shims or set the thing on fire.

I used to have awful squeel with RB74 pads. Tried the pink gluey stuff - didn't work. Then tried the copper brake grease on the stock shims and it worked fine. However I did need to reapply around 20,000km. Now I just use Bendix Ultimates and no problem but still using some copper grease. Love that stuff.

Symptoms exactly as described. The squeel used to go away when they got hot enough but that was pretty rare off track.

im running the bendix srt pads, and the front wont stop squealing at low speeds, light braking.

chamferred the fk out of them, no difference

used some de-squeak, and went away for a while.

going to have to give the copper grease a go i suspect

  • 1 month later...

ive been having the same squealing shit since i bought the 33. so fking annoying n embracing n neighbours went complaining like crazy. changed rotors pads put on goo grease but the fking noise still there. now im just giving up.

Update:

Rechamferred the pads, installed landcruiser anti rattle shims, used a thin but dispersed layer of wheel bearing grease between all shims and pad.

No more noise.

Sometimes you dont have to buy 55dollar shims ;)

Good luck to op, hope you fix it soon.

Well heres my input. I got another set of brake pads. Remsa brake pads with the soft backing. Fitted then on and went out to bed them. What do you know, no noise! I was CHEERING. Two days after heard a very faint squeal when coming to a stop.... My stomach dropped. The noise came back. It f**king came back. Brand new pads, brand new rotors. I got f**king pissed off, like f**kING PISSED OFF. The money ive spent on new brake parts trying to get rid of this shit. I went and bought that red paste shit and some brake grease(next I will get copper grease if this doesn't work). I went home and pulled apart the caliper which makes noise, note guys the noise is ONLY from my left rear wheel. None of the others make noise!

I put some red stuff on the back of the pad. I put some red stuff between the shims. I put some red stuff on the back of the shim which contacts the caliper piston. I wire brushed all the shims prior to this. I wire brushed inside the caliper. I wire brushed the pin. I put brake grease on the two anti rattle shim things and grease on the pins. So far 3 days, no noise. Touch wood the problem is gone. I have NO idea why it is only ONE SIDE causing this issue. I don't know if the caliper is seizing, if the hub is damaged(unlikely, it spins in a perfect circle, it is aligned properly etc) or if its some other BS. Its obviously the braking system. I ensured that the caliper was tight onto the mounts. Honestly if this does not go away I will probably take my whole f**king subframe off, new mounts everywhere, rebuild the CV shafts, change any bearings, set shit on fire.

I used this to grease up metal on metal parts

http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/online-store/products/Permatex-Ultra-Disc-Brake-Caliper-Lube-14G.aspx?pid=113948#Description

And this to use between the high potential noise points

http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/online-store/products/CRC-Disc-Brake-Quiet-118mL.aspx?pid=1061#Description

Not the CRC brand, I used the Dynagrip(exactly the same shit).

I feel your pain bro.

Same issue with my front brakes running standard rotors, stop squeel sealant, qfm A1RM pads, it is deafingly loud, just ask BSA.

After applying the sealant and remachining rotors, it went away for 5-10k kn and came back louder then ever.

Thinking of changin to remsa pads as well but it might just come back like in your situation. I am at a total loss with this so I just put up with it.... For now.

My old ebc green pads NEVER squeeled at all!!

Can we set fire to our cars together???

    • Wow, thanks for your help guys 🙏. I really appreciate it. Thanks @Rezz, if i fail finding any new or used, full or partial set of original Stage carpets i will come back to you for sure 😉 Explenation is right there, i just missed it 🤦‍♂️. Thanks for pointing out. @soviet_merlin in the meantime, I received a reply from nengun, and i quote: "Thanks for your message and interest in Nengun. KG4900 is for the full set of floor mats, while KG4911 is only the Driver's Floor Mat. FR, RH means Front Right Hand Side. All the Full Set options are now discontinued. However, the Driver's Floor Mat options are still available according to the latest information available to us. We do not know what the differences would be, but if you only want the one mat, we can certainly see what we can find out for you". Interesting. It seems they still have some "new old stock" that Duncan mentioned 🤔. I wonder if they can provide any photos......And i also just realized that amayama have G4900 sets. I'm tempted too.
    • Any update on this one? did you manage to get it fixed?    i'm having the same issue with my r34 and i believe its to do with the smart entry (keyless) control module but cant be sure without forking out to get a replacement
    • So this being my first contribution to the SAU forums, I'd like to present and show how I had to solve probably one of the most annoying fixes on any car I've owned: replacing a speedometer (or "speedo") sensor on my newly acquired Series 1 Stagea 260RS Autech Version. I'm simply documenting how I went about to fix this issue, and as I understand it is relatively rare to happen to this generation of cars, it is a gigantic PITA so I hope this helps serve as reference to anyone else who may encounter this issue. NOTE: Although I say this is meant for the 260RS, because the gearbox/drivetrain is shared with the R33 GTR with the 5-speed manual, the application should be exactly the same. Background So after driving my new-to-me Stagea for about 1500km, one night while driving home the speedometer and odometer suddenly stopped working. No clunking noise, no indication something was broken, the speedometer would just stop reading anything and the odometer stopped going up. This is a huge worry for me, because my car is relatively low mileage (only 45k km when purchased) so although I plan to own the car for a long time, a mismatched odometer reading would be hugely detrimental to resale should the day come to sell the car. Thankfully this only occurred a mile or two from home so it wasn't extremely significant. Also, the OCD part of me would be extremely irked if the numbers that showed on my dash doesn't match the actual ageing of the car. Diagnosing I had been in communication with the well renown GTR shop in the USA, U.P.garage up near University Point in Washington state. After some back and forth they said it could be one of two things: 1) The speedometer sensor that goes into the transfer case is broken 2) The actual cluster has a component that went kaput. They said this is common in older Nissan gauge clusters and that would indicate a rebuild is necessary. As I tried to figure out if it was problem #1, I resolved problem #2 by sending my cluster over to Relentless Motorsports in Dallas, TX, whom is local to me and does cluster and ECU rebuilds. He is a one man operation who meticulously replaces every chip, resistor, capacitor, and electronic component on the PCB's on a wide variety of classic and modern cars. His specialty is Lexus and Toyota, but he came highly recommended by Erik of U.P.garage since he does the rebuilds for them on GTR clusters.  For those that don't know, on R32 and R33 GTR gearboxes, the speedometer sensor is mounted in the transfer case and is purely an analog mini "generator" (opposite of an alternator essentially). Based on the speed the sensor spins it generates an AC sine wave voltage up to 5V, and sends that via two wires up to the cluster which then interprets it via the speedometer dial. The signal does NOT go to the ECU first, the wiring goes to the cluster first then the ECU after (or so I'm told).  Problems/Roadblocks I first removed the part from the car on the underside of the transfer case (drain your transfer case fluid/ATF first, guess who found out that the hard way?), and noted the transfer case fluid was EXTREMELY black, most likely never changed on my car. When attempting to turn the gears it felt extremely gritty, as if something was binding the shaft from rotating properly. I got absolutely no voltage reading out of the sensor no matter how fast I turned the shaft. After having to reflow the solder on my AFM sensors based on another SAU guide here, I attempted to disassemble the silicone seal on the back of the sensor to see what happened inside the sensor; turns out, it basically disintegrated itself. Wonderful. Not only had the electrical components destroyed themselves, the magnetic portion on what I thought was on the shaft also chipped and was broken. Solution So solution: find a spare part right? Wrong. Nissan has long discontinued the proper sensor part number 32702-21U19, and it is no longer obtainable either through Nissan NSA or Nissan Japan. I was SOL without proper speed or mileage readings unless I figured out a way to replace this sensor. After tons of Googling and searching on SAU, I found that there IS however a sensor that looks almost exactly like the R33/260RS one: a sensor meant for the R33/R34 GTT and GTS-T with the 5 speed manual. The part number was 25010-21U00, and the body, plug, and shaft all looked exactly the same. The gear was different at the end, but knowing the sensor's gear is held on with a circlip, I figured I could just order the part and swap the gears. Cue me ordering a new part from JustJap down in Kirrawee, NSW, then waiting almost 3 weeks for shipping and customs clearing. The part finally arrives and what did I find? The freaking shaft lengths don't match. $&%* I discussed with Erik how to proceed, and figuring that I basically destroyed the sensor trying to get the shaft out of the damaged sensor from my car. we deemed it too dangerous to try and attempt to swap shafts to the correct length. I had to find a local CNC machinist to help me cut and notch down the shaft. After tons of frantic calling on a Friday afternoon, I managed to get hold of someone and he said he'd be able to do it over half a week. I sent him photos and had him take measurements to match not only the correct length and notch fitment, but also a groove to machine out to hold the retentive circlip. And the end result? *chef's kiss* Perfect. Since I didn't have pliers with me when I picked up the items, I tested the old gear and circlip on. Perfect fit. After that it was simply swapping out the plug bracket to the new sensor, mount it on the transfer case, refill with ATF/Nissan Matic Fluid D, then test out function. Thankfully with the rebuilt cluster and the new sensor, both the speedometer and odometer and now working properly!   And there you have it. About 5-6 weeks of headaches wrapped up in a 15 minute photo essay. As I was told it is rare for sensors of this generation to die so dramatically, but you never know what could go wrong with a 25+ year old car. I HOPE that no one else has to go through this problem like I did, so with my take on a solution I hope it helps others who may encounter this issue in the future. For the TL;DR: 1) Sensor breaks. 2) Find a replacement GTT/GTS-T sensor. 3) Find a CNC machinist to have you cut it down to proper specs. 4) Reinstall then pray to the JDM gods.   Hope this guide/story helps anyone else encountering this problem!

    • perhaps i should have mentioned, I plugged the unit in before i handed over to the electronics repair shop to see what damaged had been caused and the unit worked (ac controls, rear demister etc) bar the lights behind the lcd. i would assume that the diode was only to control lighting and didnt harm anything else i got the unit back from the electronics repair shop and all is well (to a point). The lights are back on and ac controls are working. im still paranoid as i beleive the repairer just put in any zener diode he could find and admitted asking chatgpt if its compatible   i do however have another issue... sometimes when i turn the ignition on, the climate control unit now goes through a diagnostics procedure which normally occurs when you disconnect and reconnect but this may be due to the below   to top everything off, and feel free to shoot me as im just about to do it myself anyway, while i was checking the newly repaired board by plugging in the climate control unit bare without the housing, i believe i may have shorted it on the headunit surround. Climate control unit still works but now the keyless entry doesnt work along with the dome light not turning on when you open the door. to add to this tricky situation, when you start the car and remove the key ( i have a turbo timer so car remains on) the keyless entry works. the dome light also works when you switch to the on position. fuses were checked and all ok ive deduced that the short somehow has messed with the smart entry control module as that is what controls the keyless entry and dome light on door opening   you guys wouldnt happen to have any experience with that topic lmao... im only laughing as its all i can do right now my self diagnosed adhd always gets me in a situation as i have no patience and want to get everything done in shortest amount of time as possible often ignoring crucial steps such as disconnecting battery when stuffing around with electronics or even placing a simple rag over the metallic headunit surround when placing a live pcb board on top of it   FML
