Ok so I had to rotate my comp housing on my turbo the other day and noticed the seal ( the one that seals the comp housing to the core ) is buggered is it safe to use silastic or a form a gasket goo type substance ?

Any feedback appreciated

generally sikaflex and 2way tape can fix anything in the right quantities :P

the real answer is a no unfortunately.. not recommended. But im sure the oring u broke isnt worth much, check ebay

Red gasket goo on the external gate outlet...slightly caught fire on the dyno. Perhaps not the best thing to use that close to the hot side of an engine if there is oxygen present.

A case of, can you smell something burning?? Umm yep.

if its just an o-ring??

go see any bearing/o-ring shoppe. they should be able to sort you out. most silicone's are VERY heat resistant, and how they catch fire is a little beyond me. i have the red stuff holding the extractors together on my Bug. its gotten hot, and a little bit white over the years, but never on fire...i assume its pretty hot there as it gets a nice glow going on at full song (no turbo attached tho....yet)

It's not an Rubber o ring as such it's a ring but it's proper gasket papery stuff hahahah

And discopotato I can get them from mtq but I don't get much time to go that way so I was just swing if I could use what I had instead of going there but thanks either way lads

The standard one maybe Blake but this is a highflow turbo and it's definetly low quality gasket paper cause it fell to bits hahahah

but I have a spare turbo here so I might see if the factory steel one fits the highflow

Cheers for the input

seems a bit suss who highflowed it? wack the proper seal on there should fit if its the same turbo

Usually when you get to machined surface clamped together they will seal when clamped mate I would assume that it's the same thing with the Garret turbos .

The old v6 commos vn to be serries 2 never ran exaust mani gaskets because they were two machined surfaces so they sealed well enOugh with the right clamp pressure .

And Blake it wa done by one of the boys at mtq as an after hours thing hahahah so I'd say that's why the seal didn't get replaced an when I rotated the housing it just fudged up on me lol

    • Did you pay with a credit card? I'd be putting a charge back through then finding a new sparky to sort it out.
    • If you mean the alarm immobiliser; theyre internal to the alarm itself which makes that difficult; I couldnt even see where he put it; its not in the same place as last time; but with all black wiring it might be very challenging to trace  I had someone turn the key for me as I know it only primes for a couple of seconds As my post above; I am getting no voltage to the pump at all; but I am testing continuity of the power line (SB) from the pump plug to the relay fine. As well as the negative from the pump plug to a 12V constant.    Yeah; he blammed the no start on a bad battery; said I needed to get a new battery and it'll start. Turns out the battery drained because the tail lights had been on for half the day during the install (the rubber cushion on the brake switch gave out while he was testing it as I have a picture of the car from that morning with the tail lights off..i've replaced that). The battery was turning over the engine just fine for a long time; but got low since lights were draining it so it was too low to test a start after he finished. I bought a new one on his advice...$250 wasted. My original battery charged up just fine and is healthy.    It was running perfectly fine when I messed up the old alarm (programmed out the remotes). He couldnt start it after removing the old alarm; my assumption is that when he unhooked it; he didnt bridge the circuit back when trying to start it. Its always been perfectly fine. The ECU swap and pump were 2 years ago. It's never missed a beat in that time.
    • This is a big issue for me without the diff. I just have zero drive from the passenger side when drivers side has no traction. Bec's parents place has a crazy steep driveway with odd camber and I have never been able to get up. My bro-in-law's 130i with an (unknown brand) LSD gets up fine as does their dad's Hiace. My car stays at the bottom. We have other odd camber roads around here as we're elevated a bit and if it's raining I can get totally stuck around some hairpins.
    • Yeah, I am super excited for this.
    • Was the car running before he touched the car?
