Hey Just bought an RB25DET Skyline and looking at ways of improving power first off. I know there are many ways to do this and all are somehwere in the forums but i want to know more about the front facing plenum idea. What exactly does this do? Does it require more modifications than just this? will it help increase power now or later down the track?

Standard plenum is fine for most power goals. Your better off having an aftermarket ecu with a front facing plenum. Only reason i put one on is cause it looks good and makes changing plugs easier

If you have not spend $5000+ on basic mods

Turbo

ECU

Injectors/Fuel pump

AFM

Clutch

Brakes

Suspension

FMIC

Then don't waste time with a plenum. Better off spending money on all the other stuff, far better gains and return on the spend.

Awesome Cheers guys!!!

You dont happen to have any quick links that will direct me to the topics on getting the power I want etc? This place can be a mission to find what im looking for even with the search

Well I havent really got a power Number in mind which may be my first problem. Whats stock power output? Ill check the other outputs in the dyno results and try see what should be next, it allready has a 2.5" exhaust straight through no cats and an 11psi wastgate actuator.

But ill check out the results and the FI Guide, Cheers!

200 - 240ish rwkw is quite achievable on a budget. Search using those figures and see how you go :)

Before chasing power, how about some good suspension? Ie coilovers or decent shocks and springs, new bushes throughout etc.

Maybe 4000 series rotors, new pads and brake fluid, maybe replace the old worn and cracked brake lines etc.

Uh Hadnt really thought about that my head was blinded by the idea of speed. As a start though I still have my R33 GTS4 which has bilstein Shocks all with new bushes. Do you reckon it would be an improvement to swap these over?

OK well the Bilsteins would be an improvement but you would need to check that they are interchangeable- the awd supension could be different. A Bilstein dealer could possibly adapt them if necessary.

Yes, do your research for a long time then make a decision. If you rush it, you'll kick yourself.

Power should always be the last upgrade on anyones mind.

Quite often i've found if the car handles and stops well i'm happy with the factory power output. Maybe fit an exhaust, air intake and a few other things to free it up a bit.

And if you need to lose weight in your pocket, modify a skyline! About 7k should get you 280+rwkw with nice solid handling. Then factor in about 1k more for when nothing goes to plan.

I'd factor in more than 1k, could wrack that up in one dyno session when something goes wrong lol.

Every time I see my car on the dyno, I don't know about you guys, but I squint my eyes and get f**king nervous when those revs climb. It never bothers me at all on the road, only on the dyno. The first time I got my car on the rollers, I was like Wtf are they doing to my car!

    • Version 1 aluminium airbox is.......not acceptable No pics as I "didn't like the look.....alot" Even after all my "CAD", and measurements, the leg near the fusebox just didn't sit right as it ended up about 10mm long and made the angle of the dangle look wrong, the height was a little short as well, meh, I wasn't that confident that Version 1 was going to be an instant winner I might give Version 2 another go, there's plenty of aluminium at work, but, after having in on and off a few times, and laying in the old OEM airbox without the new pod filter and MAF, there may be an option to modify the OEM air box and still use the Autoexe front cover and filter.... maybe This >  Needs to fit in here, but using the panel, and not the pod, the MAF will need to fit in the airbox though> I'm thinking as the old OEM box and Autoexe cover that is sitting in the shed is just sitting around doing nothing, and they are relatively abundant and cheap to replace if I mess it up and need another, it may well fit with some modifications to how the Autoexe brackets mounts to the rad support, and some dremiling to move it get in there, should give me some more room for activities, as I don't want to move the MAF and affect the tune Sealing the hole it requires to stick it in the air box is simple, a tight fit and some pinch weld will seal it up tight  I am calling this a later problem though
    • and it ends up being already priced in as though you're just on 91RON without any ethanol. Car will lose a bit of economy as the short and long term fuel trims bring down the AFR back to stoich or whatever it is for cruise/idle for the engine.
    • Oh, you are right. But, in Australia E10 is based on 91RON fuel and ends up being 94RON. Hence it being the cheaper option for economy cars. The more performance oriented cars go for the 98RON fuel that has no ethanol mixed in. The only step up we have left then at some petrol stations is E85.
    • There is a warning that "this thread is super old" but they ignore that anyway...
    • With 10% Ethanol, we're talking 2-3% fuel consumption difference. The emissions reductions and octane boost in my opinion far outweigh this almost non existent loss.    My tanks sitting at 80%. Luckily that should go down fast as I'm on vacation again for the next two weeks.
