iwanta34gtr
Sad, I know. I'm wanting to keep my car completely stock though and for me as I dont have an exhaust - etc, you can really hear the rattles on idle and low RPM. Ant, when it comes out and I know the specifics - you'll be the first to know. (Mates rates for sure). It's not a limited edition, and by the sound of it you drive it reasonably often - so essentially it's not worth anything extra kept standard. I think you are crazy to replace it to pay labour costs to go backwards. It's worth more in the car than out of it But... each to their own Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/397454-r34-gtr-nismo-clutch-getrag-rattle-advice-suggestions-please/page/2/#findComment-6317160 Share on other sites
ARTZ
You took a Nismo clutch out and replaced it for a stocker because of a little noise???? It seems to be the trend lately Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/397454-r34-gtr-nismo-clutch-getrag-rattle-advice-suggestions-please/page/2/#findComment-6317197 Share on other sites

(OO)SKYLINE(OO)
I was in the same situation a few years back when I had to replace my HKS Twin Plate and had no idea what to go for. I thought out what I was going to use the car for and future plans for it. It's my weekend car and I had no plans on running more boost, so a single extra heavy duty clutch would do me fine. You'd figure Nissan would have engineered / designed / used a clutch that can handle a twin turbo car. Hence an OEM clutch for a GTR should be able to handle the power of a stock car. So I went the OEM clutch. My knowledge was limited as to what brands where out there, but if I had known back then, an Exedy / Nismo would have been one of the top choices. nomnomv8
If anything the rattle makes the car sound tough and like a race car which the GTR is intended to be. R31Nismoid
All true. Thanks for the advice, will rethink the plans. I could understand if you had a OS Racing twin or something, as they are such a nasty nasty clutch to use in traffic etc. Same with a lot of other twins. But the Nismo is awesome, best clutch money can buy for its purpose. Who knows, in 12 months you might put an exhaust on, tune and a set of turbos - then you'll wish you had one. iwanta34gtr
Thanks for the advice mate. You're right about the mods - I learnt from my other cars once you catch the bug its hard to stop and one thing just leads to another. Although I am aiming to keep this one stock and locked up in my garage to use as my weekend car (famous last words hey). This afternoon I will work out how to post a video of the car on idle. Curious for some feedback. GTRsean
Yep the classic gearbox getrag rattle Also due to the thin viscosity, and small amount of oil used in these boxes that gets thrown up to the higher parts of the box. RPM also dictates how noisy they can be too. Mine with A/C on will be noisier, and if it is warmed up at idle revs. Add 10 or more years of use, plus getting rid of the factory dual mass flywheel and they are a pretty noisy box as bearings slowly wear and clearances also open up. Sometimes if I want it to be just a little quieter, I can just tap the clutch when waiting at the lights in neutral and it will be a bit quieter. I think this is due to the input shaft getting into a dead central position (talking in thousanths of an inch) and making less lash noise in general. Some people recommend changing the input shaft bearing, or recoing box, but it really is just the way the box is as time goes on as well as using non OEM flywheels. There are some that are noisier than others too. iwanta34gtr
Hi mate, Yeah I put Castrol Transmax Z in it last week hoping it would make a difference. No luck in that space. Foot in the clutch is what I've been doing too. Its funny how you can put your foot in, take it out and put it in again and the noise sounds different just about every time. GTR-N1
+1 As Piggaz indicated, you DON'T do that... if its a Nismo clutch!!! If its a Nismo twin copper, it's worth $3K+ that will outlast a new single HD plate. G-Max that N1GTR talked about in his link is $4K+ (with flywheel encased) Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/397454-r34-gtr-nismo-clutch-getrag-rattle-advice-suggestions-please/page/2/#findComment-6324132 Share on other sites
R31Nismoid
Nismo Coppermix twins are worth ~$2200 landed Terry. You can get them locally at roughly that as well if you hunt around. iwanta34gtr
Hi All, Spoke with my mechanic today. Nismo clutch is like new, will be keeping it in the car. Apparently it was the spigot bearing which was making the noise. Will get further details most likely on Monday when I pick up the car. Cheers.
