Hope this is the right area.

Was on gumtree this morning looking for skylines as usual, and there must've been a shipment of imports because there was a few skylines and evos uploaded from wangara (car shop suburb for all you non WA people)

I did find a two stock R34s which I was so happy to see. however the manual was 18k and the Auto was 11k :(

This seems way to expensive, are they overcharging? Because if I could get that auto cheap I'd just do an Auto to manual conversion with an r33 gearbox and follow an old thread I found on here :)

So what is the currrent value for auto and manual R34s (stock) that you guys think?

labour isnt really a problem, dad rebuilt a few cars, I'm not afraid to get my hands dirty, and cousin owns a repair shop with a hoist. And I'm not looking to increase the value. I just hate auto's with a passion :)

ok a few things, there will be a big difference in the value of cars that are the same. you may get 2 r34's, both manual, etc that are vastly different in price. a lot of this will come down to general condition of the car. some will also come down to one owner being more eager to sell his car than the other.

as for the auto vs manual price difference, there will always be a difference in price. the 18k manual one is at the upper end of the price range. you will certainly find cheaper ones around. unless you could get the auto for a lot less than 11k i wouldn't bother doing a conversion. for starters, parts will cost you a few thousand dollars to do it properly. will still cost you a few grand to do a half arse job. then there is all the dicking around with getting the wiring sorted so that the ecu uses the right maps (most people don't do this).

i would also say the same thing about importing a car vs buying locally. don't bother importing. buy locally. that way you can personally go and inspect the car, take it for a drive and see what it's like. you can inspect the body, listen to the engine and get a general feel for what sort of condition it's in rather than just taking someone elses word for it.

you may also want to do plenty of research of running costs and maintainence costs of a turbo car before you get too far in the process. things like how expensive insurance will be (a lot for a young driver), running it on premium unleaded, regular oil changes, etc. plus the cost of fixing common problems such as failing coil packs. they aren't for everyone.

yeh I am, I dont get why there's such a huge price jump from R33s to R34s... There was a gtst R33 for $3500 on carsales in FEB that I saw.

Basic Rule:- Production Numbers of the R34 were much less than the R33 > Join the dots.

    • Yeah, it's getting like that, my daughter is coming over on Thursday to help me remove the bonnet so I can install the Carbuilders underbonnet stuff,  I might get her to give me a hand and remove the hardtop, maybe, because on really hot days the detachable hardtop helps the aircon keep the interior cool, the heat just punches straight through to rag top I also don't have enough hair for the "wind in the hair" experience, so there is that....LOL
    • Could be falling edge/rising edge is set wrong. Are you getting sync errors?
    • On BMWs what I do because I'm more confident that I can't instantly crush the pinch welds and do thousands of USD in chassis damage is use a set of rubber jacking pads designed to protect the chassis/plastic adapter and raise a corner of the car, place the aforementioned 2x12 inch wooden planks under a tire, drop the car, then this normally gives me enough clearance to get to the front central jack point. If you don't need it to be a ramp it only needs to be 1-1.5 feet long. On my R33 I do not trust the pinch welds to tolerate any of this so I drive up on the ramps. Before then when I had to get a new floor jack that no longer cleared the front lip I removed it to get enough clearance to put the jack under it. Once you're on the ramps once you simply never let the car down to the ground. It lives on the ramps or on jack stands.
    • Nah. You need 2x taps for anything that you cannot pass the tap all the way through. And even then, there's a point in response to the above which I will come back to. The 2x taps are 1x tapered for starting, and 1x plug tap for working to the bottom of blind holes. That block's port is effectively a blind hole from the perspective of the tap. The tapered tap/tapered thread response. You don't ever leave a female hole tapered. They are supposed to be parallel, hence the wide section of a tapered tap being parallel, the existince of plug taps, etc. The male is tapered so that it will eventually get too fat for the female thread, and yes, there is some risk if the tapped length of the female hole doesn't offer enough threads, that it will not lock up very nicely. But you can always buzz off the extra length on the male thread, and the tape is very good at adding bulk to the joint.
