Just had my r34 gtt turbo hi-flowed. It's the op6 rear type witch is a ball bearing turbo. When i got it back it's now a journal type bearing.

Witch type is better Journal or Ball bearing.

The company who did the work are telling me the ball bearing hi-flow turbo will fail, but the journal one will not fail.

Also am i being taken for a ride by the company who did the hi-flow by changeing it to journal type bearing????

Cost was just under $1000 to do the work.

You will hardly notice the difference between them, stick with the journal, it's easier to rebuild.

What happened to your previous turbo? If the bearings failed and smashed the rear wheel it could be a good idea to make sure the oil feed line isn't blocked.

If the company is one of the reputable turbo reconditioners then you have nothing to worry about. Ball bearing turbos don't seem to be able to handle everything we throw at them but the bush bearing turbos pretty much never fail. Not saying this will be the case for everyone but that is what we have noticed.

There is nothing wrong with journal bearing turbos. Ball bearing is slightly more responsive though.

How does it feel to drive?

Also, under $1000 is cheap

Journal are cheaper to rebuild, but I don't think the stock r34 turbo is a bb though?

Um....that was one of the two main selling points of the turbos used in Skylines (ie things that could be written down the side of the car). Ball bearing and ceramic turbine.

The GTR T28s are plain bearing.

Well there you go, I stand corrected. Either way, nothing wrong with plain bearing hi flows

what about ceramic coating it?? mine runs alot cooler , do you not let the car cool down after a flogging?

i thought that journal bearings were old technology and dont spool up as early so were not the prefered choice.. if your manifold and housing get that hot then could that be also due to the housing being too small and the exhaust too restrictive causing a build up of backpressure...

What i was saying was not to shut the engine down straightaway and let it cool down for 1min. insted of 30sec. just had the car out for a drive and it used to come onto boost at 2400rpm now it comes on at 3000+ and hits like a freight train and lights it up in second at only 12psi of boost never did this before so will be very interesting when i get it dyno tuned at EFI Profamance in a week or 2.

Going to run 14psi on street and 18-20 at drags.

Shpuld run an easy 11 second pass now.

    • I am yet to see anyone ever regret a quaife or helical. ...other than drifting/skidpan duties. I kind of want to upgrade my factory helical with a Quaife (but really it's not ultimately that different, and is a MASSIVE UNDERTAKING), that's how good the hype is about them, that I want to try them 'just to see'
    • D2 and Ksport are essentially the same thing and basically just generic Taiwanese manufacture. Better than ChinaBay crap, but... not top shelf. Öhlins have got to be some of the best dampers around, so likely to be a good option. It's going to get to the point though where I suggest you buy from Oz. We have at least 2x excellent options here. If I were you though, I'd be talking to KW about doing something for the R33. There's bugger all difference between that and the 32. In GTR land, anyway.
    • KW only offers a set for the R32 GTR. Popular options are D2 racing, Ksport or Öhlins. I have a D2 Racing coilover set, though I don't know for sure which one.
    • Well, the good news is you have more than one very good option for new coilovers in and around your country. Worth the drive over to KW to talk about GTR stuff.
    • Fair enough, I am in no way a tire expert so I'm not familiar with all the terms and conditions. I'll definitely note down the AD09 to potentially try in the future. Rain is not too big of a concern for now as I will probably only drive in the rain when I have to. And considering I still lack experience driving the GTR I'd more than likely take it easy too. I have coilovers in the car but as I barely got to drive so far I never bothered to even check if they are adjustable haha. The suspension is almost entirely old and worn as well so I suppose when I eventually fix that in the future that would make a huge difference.
