Hey guys,

Just wondering if anyone has used a twin Kinugawa turbo set up on a RB26? Have a mate who recently got a single installed on his 33GTST and upon his research found they are a really popular turbo at the moment, and have very good reviews. I looked into them a bit further, and it got me thinking. I was wondering if anyone has any experience running them as twins, and if they perform well in that format. Which spec would be best to use, etc.

Simply, I'm chasing 280-300 awkw. I would love to crack 300 but will happily settle for a safer setup around the 280 mark.

Will be doing PowerFC, injectors, oil pump, sump baffle and fuel pump. So a fairly conservative build.

Any feed back/advice would be greatly appreciated.

My original thoughts were to go with some R34 GTR N1 turbos (essentially 2860 -7's i've heard?) with the same suppporting mods to try and get my power figure.

Would I be better off simply with the N1's?

Price wise, it seemed about the same (~$1500) for the turbos, so just need some advice to tilt me either way :)

You'd better off with pair of N1's cos if you head to Kinugawa's, you'll need manifold, dump/front pipe, oil/water lines etc.

Too much of a hassle for your power goal, and it'll be easier for you and your wallet to go down tried and proven method of twin Garrett -7s or -9s which will make 300kw easily.

That's what I was thinking, other than the curiosity to try something different, my common sense says that its safer\cheaper\simpler to do the N1's. Will those supporting mods be sufficient to reach 300kw?

All supporting mods you've mentioned will be fine for 300kw.

Grab pair of 33 or 34 GTR dump pipes since you have a 32 (from memory 32R dumps are restrictive).

Save yourself the heartache of wanting more down the track and go a single. the money saved on labour when.you eventually want more than 300 having to swap out twins will easily pay for the manifold, then its one turbo not two.

also buy a map based ecu and save money on afms and dicky intake pipes.

For a mild setup like the one you have described go for something like a powerfc or nistune keeping the standard look with the AFM's. Both of these are a relatively cheap, easy to use and a crapload of support is offered on them

I don't know about Hectic... but i hope my twin L2's are scary. :yes:

Dont they do a knock off of the Trust T517Z 8cm ? They along with an 8cm housing would make for a nie 280-330rwkws bolt on option

Why not buy real ones... I have mine for sale for under 2k with new cores.

517z in 8cm make a bit more than that from memory, but you do pay the price in lag as Nick & Jack will tell you, they are a bit lazy.

... mine did, 400rwkw on 98. Not really lazy though.

You Garret fanbois always come up with the lamest excuses. Cant you just stomach that the Trust turbos were almost as responsive and made the same power with half the boost :)

    • So, this shouldn't be such a mission, but there were a few tricks so I thought I'd post up a DIY for it. This was on a Q50 Red Sport but I doubt any other V37 model is very different (maybe just less steps for the intake heat exchanger hoses) I pulled the radiator out to flush it because the car was running hot at the track, but obviously the same steps apply for changing a radiator for any reason including an upgrade. If you are removing the radiator, you of course need to drain and refill, so have 5+ litres of blue coolant ready. You don't need to drain the intake heat exchanger to remove the radiator but depending on your plans you may need a couple of litres for that as well. You will also need something to deal with the auto transmission lines, I used 2x 8mm rubber caps on the radiator side, and a short length of 8mm pipe on the car side.....unless you can block these lines quickly you will loose AT fluid and it may be enough to hurt the transmission if you don't refill it. Other than that....lets go... "First, jack up your car". Yes really, and put it safely on stands. If you are not confident doing that you need to give this job to a mechanic

    • Don't even try to run it on the stock ECU if you're going to have the boost controller bring boost above ~10 psi. I've already told you that. If you use the Nistune ECU, you will need to CAREFULLY read the available documentation for Neo tuning, and read some threads on the Nistune forums, to discover the various things you have to do to prevent the ECU from going bananas when the boost is too high. The is a table associated with th boost sensor that must be modified to prevent it from shitting the bed. This is just one of the things that you will need to do to the tune in Nistune, because the Neo turbo ECU will be expecting to see a number of things (such as the TCS) that are not there, and you have to block the DTCs on those. It is totally not surprising to me that you are having the problems that you are, but the solutions to these problems have been known for >15 years. So just get it done.
