Ive been asked about turbo selection by mates who want to turbo their diesels.

2 have land cruisers with 4.2l diesels and another is rebuilding a 10.2l cat diesel to put in an old cruiser as an unlicensed farm car.

Does anything we use on our cars even come close to suiting a diesel? Both cruisers would rarely see 4000rpm but with the capacity difference they would only require a bit more air?

The guy with 10.2l cat engine would prefer twin setup. I'm unsure of the characteristic differences required between the 2 fuels and it got me curious.

Hoping someone has experience or could point me in the right direction.

And people put the HX35 onto 2.6ltr motors and then wonder why they are buckets of sh*t :D

it's not much chop on the 5.9 Cummins either, but that is the stock turbo so that's what went back on

though I think it's more the breathing setup on the truck more than the turbo, and the factory waste gate is 2 bar

Yuh, petrol turbos and diesel turbos have different sizing of compressor relative to exhaust housing. Tends to make them not great matches when swapped.

Smaller compressor to turbine?

Would imagine 1.06 rear as they would be under load for longer and response is less of an issue?

Might see if Stao makes/modifies anything for the 4.2's

what about a 2.5 diesel turbo on a 2009 nissan navara? what could be done to give it a bit more go without massive expense like computers etc my bro just bought one.. :yes:

Mate put a 3076 anti sugre with a .82 rear on his GU Patrol TD42, highmount manifold and external gate. Thing is super responsive and makes about 180rwhp, which for a diesel is a lot.

I beleive Kando are starting to make some TD05 combo's aimed at Diesels, United Fuel injection in Perth are using some now.

lol.. i dont think he wants 30psi.. the later models have a variable vane turbo, maybe one of those would be a good upgrade.. answered my own question..

i wonder if one of the housings could be slapped on a skyline for extra response..maybe discopotato would know

so do diesel engines work well with gt30's?

try a 3" exhaust and a performance chip, 20-30% increase depending on quality of components

I was looking at some Gensets i worked around. Detroit Diesel 8.7L Inline 6. 200HP @ 1500RPM (Genset so locked to 1500RPM).

Wasn't able to see the ID tags on the turbo because of the turbo beanie that was wrapped around it.

But no wastegate, looked to be something similar sized to that of a GT30 with a huge exhaust housing - go figure its a diesel. Non water cooled core. I did see the compressor wheel on one when the engine was getting a service and it had quite a small compressor wheel.

After going through all the engine parameters on the Genset control unit, i cam accross Boost pressure. Boost pressure was holding at a constant 0.1 - 0.2 Bar. Which is bugger all. I believe in this instance these engines are turbocharged purely to get more efficiency out of them.

Another story, a friend of mine is currently working out which turbo to replace his current one on his 5L (3 Litre) Hilux engine. Currently has a TD04-13G. According to MTQ and Adelaide turbo services keeping that Turbo is ideal for that enigne.

Bit of a story there but maybe some of it was useful :whistling:

Diesel exhaust temps are somewhat lower than high strung petrols.....so the variable vane mechanisms usually shit themselves fairly quickly when misapplied (ie used on petrol). Only Porsche and a couple of others have gone to the effort of engineering variable vane petrol engine stuff that can handle it.

That was with 70% Load. I thought the exact same thing when i first looked at it. Then read the screen three times, and yes very low boost pressure. Its exactly the same when the Gen sets are unloaded as well.

    • Sounds like you've got an interesting adventure ahead here with local support if you have trouble! My guess is that, unboosted, you will be OK with a small upgrade like -9. What will happen is that once the stock ECU sees more airflow than it expects it will add a heap of fuel and pull a heap of timing to be safe because it can't understand how it could get that much air without there being an issue. You will see clouds of black smoke and it won't pull hard through the midrange and top end. So, overall it will be a bit frustrating but should be OK. If you are still nervous set the base timing back 2o through the CAS, but it will be even more sluggish everywhere. As said above through...this is not my guarantee your engine won't be blown into a million pieces, leaving you looking for very hard to find parts A better idea is get a computer with logging ASAP, wire in a wide band O2 sensor and a use remote tuner. I've done multiple cars this way and while it is not as good as a specific tune on a dyno they can get it 90% right. I'd suggest if you can afford an R33 GTR these days you can afford an ECU and tune. And if you can't afford that you sure won't be able to afford the rebuild if it goes bad in the meantime,.  
    • Yeah it would be nice if someone took the time to put that sort of information together, but there are a lot of variations in looms. I think you are making this way hard for yourself if you just want to get it running....sourcing an SR20 with the right wiring will be a billion times easier than matching the RB loom to an S15 chassis. If you do end up going this way, you just need to trace every wire in the loom with a multimeter, 95% of them will go to a location you can confirm at the ECU.....and then post it up for the next person who needs it  
    • Just top it up with water, and keep a general idea of how much you added. It is normal for water to be pushed into and pulled out of the reservoir through the cap, and it should not be more than half full or it will be likely to overflow when hot. Any decent mechanic can do a pressure test of the cooling system to confirm if you have a leak. Keep in mind if it is only leaking a little and when hot it may well evaporate before you see it hit the ground
    • I'd ask the shop what they used and use that. Mixing coolants is sometimes OK, sometimes not, and you have know the details of each coolant to know whether it's a good idea or not.
    • Is it alright to top up with just another green coolant?
