I was driving my standard R33 GTR pretty hard and then heard a loud pop and suddenly the car was loosing power.

Came to a complete stop and the car stalled. Started it up and I could hear a loud intake noise (like major turbo spool) every time I revved it and then I drove it home and there was no boost and it kept wanting to stall unless I revved it and black smoke.

Next day, I tried to start it up but it wouldn't turn over. Called up a well known GTR mechanic here in NZ and he said that it might not be the turbos / motor and it may just be the intercooler piping popped off / hole which caused the car to missfire and foul the plugs therefore the car isn't starting?

I'm not really mechanically minded so I just visually examined the piping through the engine bay and it looks fine to me... Whats the best way to properly examine the intercooler piping and what's your guys opinion on the problem?

Visual inspection should make the problem pretty obvious.... Check all the pipes are secure and clamps etc.... Fingers crossed its something simple!

Yep...

Likely the turbo side cooler hose. So the whole splash guard will need to come off to have a look-see.

As the guys above have stated check the IC piping first and foremost shouldnt take you more than half an hour including jacking the car up and back down.

Im presuming you have standard turbos fitted?? If so how much boost where you running through them?

When I popped my intercooler hose, I was stuck in the NATO park for hours until a mate came with tools lol it was the turbo side pipe behind the front bar....when I got it home I ended up taking all of the intercooler pipes off, applied a bead of sikaflex and replaced the clamps....

Fingers crossed urs is the same problem and not turbo related

also, while a popped-off IC hose if frequently obvious (and in your case, if it was running that bad id say it will be), but sometimes it is not. So if nothing is obviously popped-off then dont assume it isnt an IC hose, just be more thorough n check everything twice.

Once one of mine popped but it was only coming off when the car went on boost. N upon visual inspection i couldnt see anything obvious, but looking closer i found it.

Good luck!

    • The fancy pants red shock tower brace is finally incoming from MX5 Mania, getting it shipped from 'Merica has been a long and problematic process, and GWR, the 'Merican supplier will not ship directly to consumers outside of the US, Mania basically had to order a heap of them, the colour choice was silver, or red, and we all know anything red adds 5 killerwasps of dynotorques..... Whilst it does fit over a 2.5, and I've seen a few photos and videos of it being installed and fitting, google also says it might get real close to the FAB9 intake front runner, people in the US says it does fit with the FAB9 intake, except for one person who said it slightly touched.......so there is that.....LOL..... As it seems that I am the first in AU to have this combination of parts there's no local knowledge about fitment, so I'm just a willing guinea pig in this endeavour, I'll cross my fingers and toes and hope for the best In other news, I ordered stuff from China  on the same day I ordered the 23° silicone bend from Victoria, the stuff from China arrived a day ago, the 23° silicone bend is still travelling around Australia thanks to Australia Post, and "may" be here next week
    • Very good news...I contacted Racebox about it last night. My car is a 2016 so remains to be seen if it is compatible, requires a TCU swap, or is impossible.
    • What ECU are you running? This is probably the biggest question. If it's a PowerFC, I'd probably change the ECU and get something newer that will handle the injectors in a nicer way.
