Hey all,

Im looking at putting an oil cooler on my r34 and was wondering is there any preference, brands, thermostat or not etc?

The car is hoping to see a few track days nothing to major.

Cheers,

James

Group buys

Autobahn 88 ebay

Mocal

Setrab

Earls mounted right

Hks

Greddy

thermostat preferred , nessasary if you live anywhere coldish in winter

Noticed the autobahn fittings are the same as a few other brands

you will need a stainless braided hose cutting item, grinder with diamond blade makes clean quick cuts , airsaw

Most likely angled fittings , i just did mine and had to get some angles to make it neat

You will need strong zip ties

Alloy or rubber coated P clips and a few parralel alloy blocks to make it nice , a length of rubber or protective material about a half metre long

stainless is like a slow chainsaw on metal frames etc

Remote filter bolts right on fuel filter braket hose , move the filter back a bit

The filter supplied by some companies is off a honda . But can be substituted easy

pirtek has bits but not cheap " proflow"

You will need some metal strap or strap iron /alloy that you can bend , paint, drill and mount

You will also need some bolts unless you have a fmic that works perfect to piggy back that mount bolt

Mount the cooler up not down to avoid air traps

it fit fine in front of washer bottle

If you want less headache and straight bolt up affair, look at the GReddy GREX Oil Cooler kits. They can be had for under $900 from eBay or forum traders, everything is plug and play and has a built in thermostat in the sandwich plate.

Unless its made exactly for the model it takes about the same amount of work ? Not many kit are plug and play simple unless you pay dearly for it

Most of the work is laying it out and plotting the path , the install tutorial here wasnt up to my standards but was helpful insight into mounting ideas

Anyway you can get the setrab type setup for a third of that cost !!

This should cover everything. Good price too.

What I'd recommend, remove the stock oil heater/cooler and replace with a oil filter stud to allow the oil filter to screw straight to the block. Perfect for relocation kits!

Here's how I did mine; (haven't plumbed in oil cooler yet).

This is what I went with:

Supposed to be here on friday so will see how it looks. But has all the right stuff - thermostat, braided lines, all fittings and 19 row cooler

$460AUD delivered I think it was so pretty good price

fitting these oil cooler does it remove the oil water heater or whatever they are called?

It can , depends on how its hooked up?

if you ditch the housing for rb20 its no longer needed

If you dont its your choice ?

Still missing remote filter and another hose ? 745 bucks

anyway I haven't installed that brand so cant comment on how fiddly it is

You wont find purple fittings easy I would think? If that matters ?

I fitted one to a R33 years ago, pretty straight forward. No headache with making brackets or guessing how much hose you need. A mate paid like $500 or so delivered from Yahoo auctions.

Depends if you need a relocator or not, changing oil filters on RB20/25s (with stock plenum) aren't as bad as RB26s, which is a pain in the arse

I had a problem with the Autobahn 88 filter relocator, the guys a the filter factory helped me out.

The rb 20 (dunno about rb25) does not use a filter with a bypass, as the bypass is in the motor, and the thread supplied with the kit was metric, no non bypass filters with a metric thread.

So i had to get a new remote filter head as the thread in the auto88 one could not be changed easily.

Mine was not a direct fit and i had to put the battery in the boot to get some room.

Extra money and time to custom make one to fit, it can be a real pain. Cheap to buy initially but not cheap to fit.

A direct fit would be real nice.

Ps: dont forget the oil thermostat!

I just fitted a Mishimoto kit to my 34gtt

Brilliant little kit and everything fit straight out of the box. Retained the stock cooler as well. Wasn't much point in removing it. And decided not to go for a thermostatic sandwich plate. It warms up fast enough on its own.

$400 delivered from frsport.com

Without a thermostat in the winter in some locations the oil doesn't get hot enough to flow properly , bad on bearings in some cases or could cause oil starvation if the oil isnt synthetic and clags up

Normal mineral oil can freeze solid !! even at 0c its like mud or syrup

    • ok so if i wanted to go 18's i would go for 8's  in front 30+ or 32+ off set at front and the back 9 would be ok? what offset should i aim for.. then can i do some  hunting for wheel rim choices..    If i get this - will this fit all around: Size: 18 x 8.5 +37 - n what tyres size tyre should i get for front n back?
    • Absolute f*cking nightmare. I had to take breaks constantly, and I was always pissed off when I got home. The line split in Italy on day 2 (we drove from the Netherlands), lol. Driving any narrow European town was... well, sh*t.   Appreciate it man. Here, I'll just drop a favourite from the load I took on Saturday.   I'll update here when things happen with the car, the thing is, with stock power and almost everything chassis-wise taken care of, there really are no problems. 268,000kms now and counting.
    • Ah! I actually managed to snag a lightly used set.... that aren't so suitable for me right now. They don't work on a GTT without some cutting or creative heat moulding. I thought about reselling them myself cause I didn't want to murder them, but it looks like I'm probably going to attempt to murder them/melt them because I may as well. @GTSBoy @PranK can somebody close this thread?
    • Hey mate,  I have a set, one is slightly damaged but wont be noticable once installed.  Shoot me a message if your still after them
    • I couldn't wait But, the black constant tension hose clamps were too thick and there wasn't enough clearance at the T/B and I couldn't get it to seat properly, so I had use a silver one there I also added some 3" silicone over the alloy bit that goes through to hole on the radiator support as it looked like it was sitting on the edge of the hole in the radiator support, I never noticed a rattle or anything, but there was a witness mark It is basicly done, and I can live with the silver hose clamp at the T/B, I will get a black clamp for the head vent though where it is attached to the bulkhead fitting  It never stops...LOL, only issue now with the shock tower brace is it slightly touches the under bonnet liner now, if I leave it it will either wear some paint off the brace where it touches, or damage the liner, so I removed the liner to see what I have to work with, with the liner removed I have about 20mm of clearance, but sadly the middle part of the underside of the bonnet is only dusted with paint and looks crap, so I cannot have that, but.... as I have a roll of Carbuilders premium under bonnet insulation in the garage laying around that is only 5.5mm thick (we were going to use it on the boys Patrol, but he crashed the front of it a few months and it was written off, hence why he now drives my old Honda Accord Euro), I'll use the OEM liner as a template and get the Carbuilders stuff fitted up to cover that dusted paint up
