and what of the problem of overtaking in an era of delicately balanced aero packages?

I think that the tyres provide enough of a performance differential, to the point where a lot of these overtakes would still have happened with, or without DRS

And quite frankly watching the leaders sweep past each other and finish nowhere near one another, is getting a bit tedious. Nobody is earning a place, DRS is gifting it them at the end of every substantial straight

Add active aero aids?

eg, similarly to KERS, drivers can activate under body fans for a certain duration per lap.

Seeing ballsy overtakes around corners would be much more interesting than straight line drag race that is DRS.

That said, seeing ballsy overtakes without aero aids would be much better. I miss 80's F1 :(

So will be real interesting now that Vettel is confirmed.

Webber off contract, Kimi off contract and two young punks at STR killing to give it a go.

I think that with Mercedes looming large as a threat for coming years with easily the strongest pairing in F1...RBR have to be looking at Kimi. He doesnt ruffle feathers. Is fast and versatile and conistant. Kimi and Zetool would be a better combination then any other team on the grid.

So if Webber wants to continue then it is easy to see either Kimi's seat or Romain's seat being offered to him at Lotus. Whether he is up to it or willing to give it a nudge now they have lost one of the top 3 engineers in the sport remains to be seen.

If Kimi doesnt spring for the seat and the assumption that Webber is GONESKI, then who woudl you take ...Dan or Jev? I think Jev is looking as though there is room for the guy to improve where as Dan already looks the more conistant of the two. He has destroyed him something like 20-7 in quali so if you have thefastest car on the grid in the RBR then they woudl surely be looking for a guy that can quali well and have good race pace.

The apst two GPS have been very good for Jev and bad for Dan....i cross my fingers but I think a pesky Frenchman may get in the way of Dans dream :(

Kimi would be insane not to jump ship given the opportunity. Lotus don't have the cash to keep up development on the car, and it's a one trick pony. Really gentle on tyres and only ever in the hunt where tyre deg is a big issue. Also, he's the most underpaid driver in the field. Unless there's no seat for him in one of the other 3 top teams, there is no point staying at Lotus.

I think JEV is the better option than Dan of the two TR drivers. But they really only take standout young drivers to RBR. JEV will need a few more of these recent results to make it to RBR I think.

Bottas really showed his ability in that dog Williams in the wet/changeable conditions in qually though. And showed maturity and skill in the race with all the faster cars, now able to use their genuine pace in the dry race start and fly past the slow Williams. I think I'd be after him over either TR driver if you were looking for young talent.

very interesting Roy......despite being a winning team, I would highly doubt Webber would remain with RBR considering all the BS that has been occurring (would you remain in that environment with finger boy's political antics?)

Romain Grosjean is on very thin ice and Eric Boullier has mentioned to RG that this (season) is most likely is his last - just too many (stupid) mistakes. On the other hand I can totally see Kimi with RBR and would love to see that.

Knowing Kimi's demeanour, he would not give two sh!ts about Vettel and get on the with the job and make things more competitive within RBR.

If none of the above transpires, I would be lying if I was not disappointed to see 'Dan the man' not get a chance to be with RBR. He has IMO more credibility than Jev (big statement from me because I am French) and has started to demonstrate some his true potential this season (he needs to anyways).

Time will tell as usual.

Quali 20-7. Disco Dan shoudl have beaten Jev in teh WDC last year but for two mech failures at the end of races in points scoring positions. Jev crashed when in points scoring positions, caused a few big crashes etc. First year in F1 so excusable and no real blame deserved when put in context of gorwing pains.

STD have commented that Dan never spins, crashes or crashes and always looks in complete control. JA is expecting that the upcoming GPs will favour Dans style as i read theyir driving styles are very different and Dan should outperform Jev on circuits that require ability to get the most out of the balance of the car in high speed stuff.

No way would Mark go anywhere else unless RBR don't sign him for next year. Even if he doesn't like his team mate (hardly anyone does, its a complete mis-nomer in F1), he's much better off in the best car on the grid than anywhere else. No to mention RBR pay him 10m. Ferrari pay Massa 6m and he's out performing Webber in terms of percentage of the No1 driver's points. Lotus only pay Kimi 3m. Webber not going anywhere unless he has to. Most overpaid driver in the field.

If nothing else it will be interesting to see anotehr driver alongside Vettel. The Lewis-Rosberg has been interesting and will be good to see if someone can put Vettel into the shade or be destroyed by him. Fact is mush like Benetton-Renault in the Alonso days no team mate is going to really have a chance along Vettel at RBR. But if its the best car on the grid it is their best chance of getting a few GP wins.

I read a recount of the 2010 WDC a few weeks back and said it was laughable that Webber wasnt backed for the WDC since it woudl have been RBRs first. It did hurth to read a seasoned F1 journo talk like that

time will tell my friend.

Im not sure vettel is willing to be kimmi's little bitch and neither is kimmi to vettel.

and every team needs a little bitch.

I personally think Kimi would have trouble with Vettels ability to qualify...but race pace and craft would be to Kimi. I think Vettel is more likely to get ruffled than Kimi. Didnt hear a peep from Kimi when Massa was in the hunt in 2008-2009.

My god just realised Kimi won the WDC in 2007...so long ago!

    • From there, it is really just test and assemble. Plug the adapter cables from the unit into the back of the screen, then the other side to the car harness. Don't forget all the other plugs too! Run the cables behind the unit and screw it back into place (4 screws) and you should now have 3 cables to run from the top screen to the android unit. I ran them along the DS of the other AV units in the gap between their backets and the console, and used some corrugated tubing on the sharp edges of the bracket so the wires were safe. Plug the centre console and lower screen in temporarily and turn the car to ACC, the AV should fire up as normal. Hold the back button for 3 sec and Android should appear on the top screen. You need to set the input to Aux for audio (more on that later). I put the unit under the AC duct in the centre console, with the wifi antenna on top of the AC duct near the shifter, the bluetooth antenna on the AC duct under the centre console The GPS unit on top of the DS to AC duct; they all seem to work OK there are are out of the way. Neat cable routing is a pain. For the drive recorder I mounted it near the rear view mirror and run the cable in the headlining, across the a pillar and then down the inside of the a pillar seal to the DS lower dash. From there it goes across and to one USB input for the unit. The second USB input is attached to the ECUtec OBD dongle and the 3rd goes to the USB bulkhead connected I added in the centre console. This is how the centre console looks "tidied" up Note I didn't install the provided speaker, didn't use the 2.5mm IPod in line or the piggyback loom for the Ipod or change any DIP switches; they seem to only be required if you need to use the Ipod input rather than the AUX input. That's it, install done, I'll follow up with a separate post on how the unit works, but in summary it retains all factory functions and inputs (so I still use my phone to the car for calls), reverse still works like factory etc.
    • Place the new daughterboard in the case and mount it using the 3 small black rivets provided, and reconnect the 3 factory ribbon cables to the new board Then, use the 3 piggyback cables from the daughterboard into the factory board on top (there are stand offs in the case to keep them apart. and remember to reconnect the antenna and rear cover fan wires. 1 screw to hold the motherboard in place. Before closing the case, make a hole in the sticker covering a hole in the case and run the cable for the android unit into the plug there. The video forgot this step, so did I, so will you probably. Then redo the 4 screws on back, 2 each top and bottom, 3 each side and put the 2 brackets back on.....all ready to go and not that tricky really.
    • Onto the android unit. You need to remove the top screen because there is a daughterboard to put inside the case. Each side vent pops out from clips; start at the bottom and carefully remove upwards (use a trim remover tool to avoid breaking anything). Then the lower screen and controls come out, 4 screws, a couple of clips (including 3 flimsy ones at the top) and 3 plugs on the rear. Then the upper screen, 4 screws and a bunch of plugs and she is out. From there, remove the mounting brackets (2 screws each), 4 screws on the rear, 2 screws top and bottom and 3 screws holding in the small plates on each side. When you remove the back cover (tight fit), watch out for the power cable for the fan, I removed it so I could put the back aside. The mainboard is held in by 1 screw in the middle, 1 aerial at the top and 3 ribbon cables. If you've ever done any laptop stuff the ribbon cables are OK to work with, just pop up the retainer and they slide out. If you are not familiar just grab a 12 year old from an iphone factory, they will know how it works The case should now look like this:
    • Switching the console was tricky. First there were 6 screws to remove, and also the little adapter loom and its screws had to come out. Also don't forget to remove the 2 screws holding the central locking receiver. Then there are 4 clips on either side....these were very tight in this case and needed careful persuading with a long flat screw driver....some force required but not enough to break them...this was probably the fiddliest part of the whole job. In my case I needed both the wiring loom and the central locking receiver module to swap across to the new one. That was it for the console, so "assembly is the reverse of disassembly"
    • But first....while I was there, I also swapped across the centre console box for the other style where the AV inputs don't intrude into the (very limited !) space.  Part# was 96926-4GA0A, 284H3-4GA0B, 284H3-4GA0A. (I've already swapped the top 12v socket for a USB bulkhead in this pic, it fit the hole without modification:) Comparison of the 2: Basically to do the console you need to remove the DS and PS side console trim (they slide up and back, held in by clips only) Then remove the back half of the console top trim with the cupholders, pops up, all clips again but be careful at the front as it is pretty flimsy. Then slide the shifter boot down, remove the spring clip, loose it forever somewhere in the car the pull the shift knob off. Remove the tiny plastic piece on DS near "P" and use something thin and long (most screwdrivers won't fit) to push down the interlock and put the shifter down in D for space. There is one screw at the front, then the shifter surround and ashtray lift up. There are 3 or 4 plugs underneath and it is off. Next is the rear cover of the centre console; you need to open the console lid, pop off the trim covering the lid hinge and undo the 2rd screw from the driver's side (the rest all need to come out later so you can do them all now and remove the lid) Then the rear cover unclips (6 clips), start at the top with a trim tool pulling backwards. Once it is off there are 2 screws facing rearwards to remove (need a short phillips for these) and you are done with the rear of the console. There are 4 plugs at the A/V box to unclip Then there are 2 screws at the front of the console, and 2 clips (pull up and back) and the console will come out.
