They sell springs separate to coilovers because before the sudden influx of cheap Chinese/Taiwanese coilovers, such things were the province of race and rally cars, were expensive, rebuildable, completely adjustable and so could be set up any which way you liked. For a price.

^^ Agree. Buying springs individually is for people with quality shocks, DIY, and those with a good adjustment (separate bound/rebound). Also people might go a have a 7kg and have a 6 and a 8kg sitting on the shelf to tweak the rates for different tracks, front/rear bias, etc.

As mentioned, I wouldn't go higher than 6/4 for street. At the moment in my GT-R I'm running old TEINs (no damper adjustment), which I estimate are around the 7-8kg/mm mark. Very good for corners, but for Sydney roads they are way too stiff.

My Ohlins with Eibach springs on the other hand, I estimate them to be around 4-5kg/mm, a lot more comfortable but still decent for handing, has body roll though (softer compression on the Ohlins compared to the TEINS). Nismo S-Tune spring rates apparently are 5.3/4.8 for the R33 GTS-t.

If in doubt, get these: http://www.otomoto.com.au/p/8475209/hsd-ad-type-coliovers-for-skyline-ecr33.html, 7/5 kg/mm with damper adjust. Good for full weight Skyline that you will track occasionally IMO.

A lot depends on how much harshness you can tolerate. I'm seriously considering going back to my Ohlin/Eibach suspension as the TEINs are just too harsh for Sydney roads (35 series tyres don't help either :P).

A mate of mine got the Blitz set from Just Jap for his S14. They are 8/6 but more comfortable than my TEINs. S14s are obviously lighter as well. Food for thought.

Im in need of some expertise with my set up, currently have http://www.nengun.com/cusco/zero-2-suspension With what im told are aftermarket springs of what he thinks are 16/18 or something stupid...

There is no one really replying in the "what is my spring rate thread" so what are the options with changing signs, Just get the right diameter to fit an prick the rates i want?

so while i'm here, can i get some mine's eibach springs from a GTR set of shocks, and stick them on a set of Bilsteins for my GTT?

And where does everyone buy their springs? I only know Pedders n King Springs here in Sydney. Does the diameter have to be exact in mm to sit on the coilover, its pretty hard to measure it with the spring in-car

Yes the diameter has to be right. But, they're supposed to be all the same. Something like 60mm internal diameter, or whatever it is supposed to be.

The places to talk to about springs for coilovers are the DECENT suspension shops (which counts out Pedders). There are examples everywhere. Places like Drummond, MCA, etc, that suspension setups for race cars and so on.

Thanks guys, got verniers today n worked out my spring rates from web calculators at 10.7/9 or 11/9- way too hard. Even going down to 9/7 will still be hard I reckon.

    • They are under bucket shims. Tomei provides a test shim kit and then any measurement of shim required. 
    • I always wondered how you were supposed to buy a set of 24 buckets and somehow magically have every single one of them yield exactly the desired clearance. I would have thought you'd need to assemble a cam with either 12 "sample" or "example" buckets of known top thickness (or a single such sample/example 12 times over!!) measure clearances at every valve, and then do the usual math to work out what the actual "shimness" of each bucket needed to be, before buying the required buckets to make up he thicknesses that you didn't have on hand.
    • I now seem to be limited in power due to my rev limit/hydraulic lifters in my built RB25. I'm looking into converting over to Tomei solid lifters. Question for anyone that has done the conversion. I was always under the impression that when using the Tomei solid lifter conversion, you would also require new valves (Longer or shorter stems, I can't remember which).  I don't know where I got this idea, as so far I see no mention of this in any of the Tomei documentation. It just states I need the Tomei solid buckets, solid lifter cams and upgraded springs. As my head is already built, all I would need is another set of 1000$ Kelford cams, 500$ buckets and about 4H hours of my time installing and I'm off to the races!?!? There's no way it's that simple, I must be missing something?
