There is a slight undercut at that point, however, it is also a thin part of the metal of the diagonal at that point, so the end of the cut will have collapsed slightly when the torch was applied to that area to a point that the thickness of the metal was then of a thickness to take the inputted energy, and was then welded correctly. When I was doing my certificate courses that slight undercutting was acceptable, as it usually showed a greater weld penetration (due to the correct energy being applied) than a weld that have been turned down to retain the non undercut look.

If that weld was cut open and tested, you would find that the penetration is equal through the whole circumference of the weld , and that is the ideal condition as then there are no variances in the strength.

When I did my time, it was generally taught you're creating a stress riser and penetration was largely irrelevant. Granted you tend to burn up the edge of the fishmouth, fit-up, technique, fatigue, cruel and unusual contortion :yucky: yada, yada all can be speculated about too. It may interest you, beyond CAMS motherhood statements on welding, other jurisdictions quantify the maximum permitted amount on ROPS...and it's very minimal.

I'm gonna have a semi rant here because I think the above shows some of what's wrong with forums sometimes. I'll use 2pees example but I'm directing this at anyone who does this sort of thing.

2pee, Brad has been very generous with his time in this thread, not to mention looking after me and another member on pricing for 2 cages. Beyond that, he's got a lot of very satisfied customers so in reality he doesn't really need to defend himself and I'm glad he edited his post and took out the 3rd line from his reply.

I'm not having a go at you, but I would genuinely ask, what was the point of that post other than to try and discredit the work? If you were genuinely concerned about the safety of the cage, you could've contacted Roy or Brad directly and said something like "Hey mate, just saw some pics of your cage, I noticed there's a bit of an undercut on one of the welds in this pic, It might be worth getting it looked at just to make sure it's safe."

Swap roles for a moment, if you'd done that weld on a cage, would you be happy with it or would you do the whole thing again, my guess is you would think it was good enough and leave it be, so try and keep that in mind when posting.

I often see comments like yours thrown around and for apparently no good reason than to try and point out flaws (and to be honest, for all we know you could be an apprentice at TAFE who has just learned what an undercut is and how to identify one - I know I had to google it before posting lol).

There's absolutely nothing wrong with honest discussion, but I think it should be phrased in a way that is as non-combative and confrontational as possible, because it encourages everyone to get involved and share opinions without worrying about having to defend themselves, their reputation, their work etc.

Members will vote with their wallets so I think the quality of Brad's work has already been well established in that regard.

Anyway, just my random thoughts, take it with a grain of salt. Chances are you didn't mean anything by it but for whatever reason I've chosen this moment to have a bit of a forum rant :)

Sorry, can appreciate your viewpoint to a certain degree, mostly just reads like ~ " I'm not a racist, but....." to me, a bit of frankness won't go astray, old and ugly enough not to worry here!

Presumably, we're all grown men, Chinese whispers in the background and polite applause in public seems at best, juvenile. I've seen Risking's aluminium work up close and personal, absolutely first class, not sure I'd characterize the above that way, he's free to tell me it's an artifact of the flash or that I don't know my arse from my elbow too!

Not really, I said I wasn't having a go, and I wasn't. I was generalising and using your comments as an example of what I was having a whinge about. Appreciate your mature response though, refreshing given what I often see around here.

The underlying comment was, to what end was that post made? At the absolute crux of it, what were you trying to achieve, and that's not a rhetorical question or said with any malice.

Perhaps my point is partly that your follow up comments could have been included in the original post to semi clarify why you felt the need to comment? As opposed to what you did, which was akin to walking up to a group of people half way through a conversation and interjecting with a one line negative comment without context.

From that, I'm guessing the point was just to say to the uneducated amongst us (like me) the cage looks the goods, but in reality that particular join could be a touch better?

watching this clip was the deciding moment that if i was ever going to a cage built not to go cheap!!!

I remember watching that clip the first time, mouth agape.

As a guide a basic bolt in half starts at $770.

What does that half cage include for $2200?
My full cages start at $2200 and my half cages end at $1800 welded in for a comprehensive one

ok so here is my half cage made by brad stacey fabrication in Perth, WA.

full weld in half cage with harness bar, with provision for a bolt in front half at a later date. compliant to schedule J of cams. $2,200

cant compliment Brads work enough, and a top bloke to add to it. yes it is probs a touch more expensive than the east cost as fabricators charge like Dr's in WA.

  • 1 month later...

Awesome cages there brad.. Thanks for putting in the time to explain the good from the bad cages. I'll be getting one of these in the near future. :)

Hopefully I am too. Dan and I paid almost 10 weeks ago and neither of us have seen our cages yet. To be fair it sounds like Brad has been having a lot of troubles with some personal issues but its still been a long wait.

Personal issues is an understatement at the moment.

The two cages you guys ordered are complete (photos have been seen) getting them sent off at a reasonable cost (considering I did free freight) and trying to get it into my spare time atm has been difficult.

Next week is a new week and will see them in your hands.

It's almost the end of the week and I'm yet to hear anything.

Just a quick reminder to let you know that there's just over a week left including today until I am forced to take further action.
I hope you've progressed on your outstanding work orders and that these two cages are completed and shipped or are about to be.

I've contacted him through a number of channels with the same message and can see he was active on SAU this morning so he has enough time to check threads it seems. Was also sent as a PM.

That aside, it's also gone to his FB and phone.

Just to add to this, as you can see, he jumped on not long after I posted my update, whether he checked this thread is unclear but it at least shows that he's remaining active on the forums.

Brad, if you're reading this, feel free to give me a call with an update. I've also left voicemail this morning.

Be patient chaps brad works his ass off on these things.

Best to call or email him rather than post in here as he likeky isnt going to see it before the weekend

The thing is he has been email'd, texted, called, PM'd and messaged on Facebook and there has been no reply.....

He was online again earlier this morning also.

So Dan, I rang Brad yesterday and got his voicemail which clearly said that his business was closed for "personal reasons" until the 28th.

Do you think that he has stolen your money and is avoiding you, or do you think he has a genuine reason and that 2 rollcages sitting on a pallet may not be the biggest priorities in his life at this moment?

yeah look,

i know it must be frustrating, but Brad seemed like a legit bloke, he is having some trouble at the moment, its not like you are a pro drifter waiting on this cage for an event.

just relax, it will come, stop going on a rampage tarnishing the guy

and for the record, i wouldnt know him from a bar of soap.

Hey Duncan, It actually says the 23rd, and that was put in place around the 17th of July and was intended for the 23rd of July, I know this because I ring regularly and have spoken to him a number of times about the personal issues and the closure of the shop around that time.

To answer your question. no I do not think he has stolen anything. I am concerned that every person that's been in the workshop has said there's only 1 cage there and I know of 3 cages that are waiting including my two and that the personal issues mentioned appear to be different for each person that calls me, but take that with a grain of salt as it's Brads perogative to not share his personal details with people and I have no qualms with that.

I've, hardly "on the rampage" and regardless of what level of motorsport I'm involved with, the bottom line is I paid upfront in full for a 2 week turn around almost 3mths ago, I am within my rights to be somewhat unhappy about it and continue to pursue either the cage or a refund.

As I mentioned, I'm not the only person trying to get some answers, and when you have guys who have been waiting many times longer than me for much larger values of work there's enough reason to discuss it.

Again, I'm not looking to defame or tarnish, every person says his work is top notch, and it appears to be, and every person says the value for money is great too, but there's no denying there are some issues at the moment affecting quite a few people and we're all keen to see Brad churn through some of the pending work and put all this behind us.

    • My experience with Rising Sun Exports Before agreeing to the sale I tried to do as much research as I could (obviously), his Facebook reviews are 98% and he goes Live at least once or twice a week. I contacted 2 people in the UK who had used him for their imports, both had positive feedback. His explanation and talk through of the import process was thorough, answering any query no matter how stupid it was. It felt as soon as the money was sent, communication dropped off. I asked for shipping updates every 2 weeks or so, not wanting to pester him, he never had any updates. I wasn't informed the car had been dropped off at the port, I only found out by his Facebook story. I asked for the photos taken at the port, knowing he would need some for insurance purposes. I received a few 5 second clips and that's it. When asked again, he said his staff had them. Weeks later I asked again, he tells me he doesn't have any, but does have 50 photos from the original advert. I never received them. I eventually got the documents sent via WhatsApp after I mentioned the port was requesting them. I purchased a CarVX report, to find out the vehicle is a Grade R with recorded accident damage, first recorded in 2017 when it was first auctioned. He never told me the grade, then again I didn't ask. His response was "Grade R means nothing, it wasn't chassis damage". Still, I would have liked to have been informed about it. Jon prides himself on being open and honest when it comes to inspecting cars, it's his main job doing so at the auctions for customers. When the vehicle arrived in the UK I noticed a few little cosmetic issues. It's a 21 year old car so it wasn't going to be mint condition. The side skirts are cracked on each corner and the sealant is failing. The front grill on the bonnet/hood isn't secured very well, mounting studs are missing. Both minor things, but again, it would have been nice to be told. During a Facebook Live walk around video of the vehicle, he mentioned it has a front Whiteline anti roll bar/sway bar. While on the inspection ramp, I noticed the stock item has been installed. When first questioned, his response was "the ARB? Switched? Since when, it never had them". Since sending video and photo evidence I've not received a response. I'm probably being over critical of the overall condition of an old car, but all I wanted was honesty (which he claims to have). I'm aware I wasn't his only customer, he's busy doing XYZ but other reviews praise him for great communication with regular updates and photos, I felt I didn't receive the same treatment.
    • I was able to get some underside photos while the car was on the ramp The suspension is all Altezza/IS200/IS300 so getting part's will hopefully be less of a headache
    • Welcome to my 2004 Toyota Mark ii IR-V Fortuna (series 2) With a 1JZ-GTE powerplant under the bonnet (hood) it'll give me plenty of scope for power upgrades. For those who aren't familiar with imports, the 1JZ-GTE is a 2.5L 6 cylinder VVTi engine with a single turbocharger. This has the factory R154 5 speed gearbox, along with a aftermarket 2 way LSD differential (brand unknown). Under the arches are a set of CST Zero 1 alloys, 18x9 +30 225/40 up front and 18x9.5 +15 265/35 on the rear. The car was quite low in Japan and there's evidence of the wheels catching the rolled arches/fenders. The tyre's aren't great so I'm in two minds whether to replace both or just the tyres and put up with the wider wheels on the rear. The car still uses stock brakes with the addition of some braided hoses. The exterior is stock with the exception of a BN Sports front bumper and a replacement Fortuna grill  Moving to the interior, the steering wheel has been replaced with a dished MOMO steering wheel (which will get swapped for my Momo Tuner for the time being) Defi Link Gauges are mounted above the climate controls and on the A pillar, the Oil Temp,Oil Pressure,Water Temp and Boost gauges should help with spirited and track driving  The stock seats have been replaced with some retrimmed Recaro bucket seats. Being a larger build these are a little snug, unfortunately the orange isn't for me so I'll look into replacing these down the line. Other modifications include a twin plate clutch, Blitz intercooler, Evolve alloy radiator, a stainless exhaust with decat, HKS EVC-S boost controller and coil overs
    • Apologies for the long read My R34 GTT was up for sale at the beginning of spring due to a few repairs creeping up. The strut tops needed replacing, roof and bonnet (hood) painting (yay for 3 stage pearl) and the underside stripped and treated. I sold the car which allowed me to be in a much better place financially. Leading up to the sale I was already thinking about the replacement. In an ideal world it needed to be a good all-rounder. Something I can mess around with, modify, do track days, do the school run, go on long drives etc.  Options included but not limited to... Laurel C35, Evo 8/9, Civic FD2, Impreza Hawkeye, Aristo and even an Audi S4 Avant (I've already got the Mazda 6 wagon). But there was always one car at the top of the list The Toyota Mark ii JZX110 I found an advert on a Facebook group for an example in Japan, from a seller called Jon at Rising Sun Exports. A few messages back and forth and Jon calls me from Yokohama one morning (or afternoon in his case). He briefly explained the import process, the costs involved and a repeat of the advert. After much deliberation, the price was agreed and the sale was locked in. I've never imported a vehicle so I jumped into the unknown head first. The money transfer was completed through wise.com (fees apply), very easy to use and the money was with him within a day or two.  The car suspension was raised for the vessel and the car dropped off at the port. It was 7 weeks later when the bill of lading was received and the freight invoice sent to me, followed by the export certificate a couple of days after (both digital copies) In the mean time the port had been in contact. I needed an agent to deal with the NOVA (notification of vehicle arrival) along with the tax/duty invoice, this was £75.00. The port also had a fee of £100, I'm guessing to cover the cost of the 10 day 'free storage' and for moving the car off the boat etc. They need a copy of the vehicle invoice, freight invoice and export certificate to allow the vehicle to pass through customs. The vessel arrived on Tuesday 5th August, the tax/duty invoice was generated and sent over. This is generally tax 20% and duty 10% of the vehicle value. Although the invoice came in at a higher amount than I had calculated. Once HMRC had received the payment the vehicle could be released from customs. I thought once the tax/duty was paid you could collect at any point, that's not the case. Your agent will need to book a collection slot, I requested Thursday 7th which was accepted, with a 9:00am slot allocated. It was a 5:00am start from Norfolk heading to Southampton. We eventually found the compound, upon presenting the bill of lading and some ID they released the car (they drove it out of the compound to the front ready for us to load up). The email from the port stated each slot had a 10 minute window, which seemed abit farfetched but the staff said it's not a strict rule. We were there for approx. 30-40 mins in total. A week prior to collecting I contacted my garage and explained the situation, I was able to get an inspection slot that afternoon. For the registration, DVLA require the car to be insured, for this I used a company called Adrian Flux who can insure the vehicle using the VIN number.
