Its possible, but unlikely. I actually have managed to convince myself the timing is ok via Nissan consult. It mostly sits on 15 at idle, the reading sometimes flaps about from 0-15, but I tested another r34 and it was doing the same thing so I think its normal. Theres a thread about it I've made on SAU i think.

As for the ecu knowing about the injectors. Your right, it woudlnt. I was wondering that too because I have heard the ECU can adjust timing and duty cycle a certain amount But if the 02 sensor only works at idle, the ECU would have to be going purely of programmed stock maps with all stock parts.

Reading through consult just reads the ignition timings that is on the ignition table, i.e. even if the CAS was dialled in at 30 degrees (just making up shit here) Nissan consult will still read 15.

So best bet is to get a timing gun and get your base timing spot on at 15 degrees BTDC.

There's no freaking way a stock ECU would knock or run lean as bat shit, if your injectors were clogged OR the seals were leaking you'll have a hard time starting the car when warm (from my past experience).

Hope that heaps, a timing gun costs less than new injectors or getting your injectors removed, cleaned, seals replaced and re-installed.. just saying :)

just wire in an additional injector into cooler piping or some thing. Old school fuel tech.

old school tuner trick to richen up the mix at the top end

Very nice attitude. Hows the view from up there? I actually think I've seen you make similar comments a number of times in the past, but don't quote me on that.

Wanting the car to run right at 7-10 psi i.e mostly stock is not asking for anything special. I don't think its unreasonable to want the stock tune to handle that. I see it done all the time.

In addition, do you realize the kind of people that are now buying skylines, especially r33s gts's? They treat them like absolute crap and they are bought and sold for chips. They are treated as next to worthless. If you should be talking down to anyone, its them, not the people that actually want to take care of them. If I sell it and buy a corolla as you suggest the car will probably end up in a scrap yard.

Yup I've already been advised of this and thats definitively what I'll most likely do. I just wanted to know instead of blowing the money on a clean if I could get a small upgrade at the same time. Thus the reason for this thread.

You don't need to get defensive you're going to hit hurdles when modding your car it is frustrating but all part of it

did you ever resolve your fuel pressure reg issue? did you end up getting an adjustable one ?

as for the 3-4k for a tune a second hand Power fc is 8-900 dollars and a tune anywhere from 600 upwards from what i've seen this would net you decent gains and the car would probably run better then factory

a nistune even less look DVSJEZ up on here from memory he had a nistune and tune deal going for under 2 grand

when we chatted your car had 300k kilometers on it what's the condition of your timing belt like has the car had the major service done on it

clean the injectors and check the CAS if that doesn't resolve it i would seriously consider taking it to a workshop something else is wrong is your AFM in decent condition ?

Have you changed the fuel filter?

not the people that actually want to take care of them.

Please tell me you're not referring to yourself?

You've been advised to do it properly (inj upgrade + tune/remap/ecu), then get all defensive when people tell you that what you're planning to do is going to be half assed at best.

If you can't afford to do it properly, don't do it at all, or do as most people on SAU do, save up until you can afford the mod.

A little knowledge is dangerous. The ECU only knows what the timing angle is because the CAS goes click and the ECU listens. If you move the CAS relative to the engine position, you move the click relative to the real engine position. The CAS still says click, the ECU still thinks it's at 15° and no-one, including you is any the wiser.

Johnnylicte, Yup I agree the car should not be running lean. That's why I am looking into injectors. If I am not going to upgrade ecu/inj/remap, I will go clean stockies or fit another stock set.

Vorse and others referring to CAS, I agree. Ideally the timing should be checked properly with a timing gun instead of relying on ECU. You never know the belt coudl be fitted wrong but I highly doubt it. I have also tried 2 CAS, and every other skyline when you fit the CAS dead center they work perfect provided nothing is faulty. Heck I've advanced the cas on another gts-t a fair bit and it still didn't ping. I don't think a small timing issue +- or going to make the car ping like that.

Timing belt looks also fine. Reg is adjustable yea.

Already on Second AFM. AFM is fine.

You can call it being defensive if you want, I am simply pointing out how useless it is to make a comment like "sell it and buy a Corrola". Nobody that has bought a skyline, and is bothered to keep it and make it run better is going to read a comment like that and think, by god, hes right. time for a corolla. Most of the time people drive them till they die or even scrap them when running. I see tons of r33s being wrecked for parts because they sell for as little as 3k.

If you guys find comments like that just plain funny then yea, I like humor on forums too. But personally I only found it funny the first few times and Its clearly not aimed at helping anything, its just done for gloating and showmanship.

Wanting a stock car to run right using stock parts is not half arsed. They didn't need a need a inj upgrade/remap/ecu out of the factory to run right, and as I said other skylines don't ping.

What your're saying is along the lines of your fridge light breaks so if you try to replace the bulb you are doing it half arsed. You gotta buy a new fridge.

Its might be something small like inj blocked and not enough fuel. I also have very good coil packs in there with a strong spark they're probably burning the shit out of whatever fuel goes in cos the car goes pretty good for what it is.

Yea I fitted the stocker back. I think the car ran richer for a while but still had pining issues.

The A-FPR is simply set up where the stock one belongs. I have tried turning up the pressure a little, heaps, etc. It helps a little with pinging, but the car doesn't run as well with high pressure and still pings up high.

Anyway thanks for the comments everyone, I think I have enough to go on now. Replacing or cleaning Injectors and checking timing belt is what i'll be doing next.

The pinking (if that's what it actually is) would be caused by timing if you have been screwing with the CAS and not timing it properly. Stick the stock reg on, check timing with a light using the plug lead method, not the wire loop, then look at the injectors.

If the car is pinging at relatively low boost levels then you should be looking for the cause of it rather than a bandaid fix. Out should be running rich. If it isn't then you have a problem.

How have you diagnosed that it is running lean? Have you used a wideband o2 sensor?

I think you need to go back to the start asked diagnose things properly. Get a timing light and check the timing properly. Get a wideband or put the car on a dyno and get the mixtures checked properly. Also check things like exhaust manifold studs and gaskets, because what you think is pinging may be a gasket rattling. Also try changing the fuel filter. It may be blocked, causing it to run lean. Finally, check the intake pipe between the afm and turbo for leaks. Is the bov recirculation hose hooked up to the bov? What about the oil breather hoses? If any if them aren't hooked up properly then you will run lean because it it's sucking in extra air that the ecu doesn't know about.

Finally, you cannot simply put in bigger injectors. The car won't run with a stock ecu. Or if it does, it will run very poorly. It will idle like crap.

My car is leaning out so instead of cleaning out the stock injectors I figure buy another set that is slightly bigger.

You start off by saying you want to run bigger than standard injectors without a ecu upgrade, that IMO is half arsed...

I in no way mentioned replacing stock parts with stock parts was half arsed.

    • I came here to note that is a zener diode too base on the info there. Based on that, I'd also be suspicious that replacing it, and it's likely to do the same. A lot of use cases will see it used as either voltage protection, or to create a cheap but relatively stable fixed voltage supply. That would mean it has seen more voltage than it should, and has gone into voltage melt down. If there is something else in the circuit dumping out higher than it should voltages, that needs to be found too. It's quite likely they're trying to use the Zener to limit the voltage that is hitting through to the transistor beside it, so what ever goes to the zener is likely a signal, and they're using the transistor in that circuit to amplify it. Especially as it seems they've also got a capacitor across the zener. Looks like there is meant to be something "noisy" to that zener, and what ever it was, had a melt down. Looking at that picture, it also looks like there's some solder joints that really need redoing, and it might be worth having the whole board properly inspected.  Unfortunately, without being able to stick a multimeter on it, and start tracing it all out, I'm pretty much at a loss now to help. I don't even believe I have a climate control board from an R33 around here to pull apart and see if any of the circuit appears similar to give some ideas.
    • Nah - but you won't find anything on dismantling the seats in any such thing anyway.
    • Could be. Could also be that they sit around broken more. To be fair, you almost never see one driving around. I see more R chassis GTRs than the Renault ones.
    • Yeah. Nah. This is why I said My bold for my double emphasis. We're not talking about cars tuned to the edge of det here. We're talking about normal cars. Flame propagation speed and the amount of energy required to ignite the fuel are not significant factors when running at 1500-4000 rpm, and medium to light loads, like nearly every car on the road (except twin cab utes which are driven at 6k and 100% load all the time). There is no shortage of ignition energy available in any petrol engine. If there was, we'd all be in deep shit. The calorific value, on a volume basis, is significantly different, between 98 and 91, and that turns up immediately in consumption numbers. You can see the signal easily if you control for the other variables well enough, and/or collect enough stats. As to not seeing any benefit - we had a couple of EF and EL Falcons in the company fleet back in the late 90s and early 2000s. The EEC IV ECU in those things was particularly good at adding in timing as soon as knock headroom improved, which typically came from putting in some 95 or 98. The responsiveness and power improved noticeably, and the fuel consumption dropped considerably, just from going to 95. Less delta from there to 98 - almost not noticeable, compared to the big differences seen between 91 and 95. Way back in the day, when supermarkets first started selling fuel from their own stations, I did thousands of km in FNQ in a small Toyota. I can't remember if it was a Starlet or an early Yaris. Anyway - the supermarket servos were bringing in cheap fuel from Indonesia, and the other servos were still using locally refined gear. The fuel consumption was typically at least 5%, often as much as 8% worse on the Indo shit, presumably because they had a lot more oxygenated component in the brew, and were probably barely meeting the octane spec. Around the same time or maybe a bit later (like 25 years ago), I could tell the difference between Shell 98 and BP 98, and typically preferred to only use Shell then because the Skyline ran so much better on it. Years later I found the realtionship between them had swapped, as a consequence of yet more refinery closures. So I've only used BP 98 since. Although, I must say that I could not fault the odd tank of United 98 that I've run. It's probably the same stuff. It is also very important to remember that these findings are often dependent on region. With most of the refineries in Oz now dead, there's less variability in local stuff, and he majority of our fuels are not even refined here any more anyway. It probably depends more on which SE Asian refinery is currently cheapest to operate.
    • You don't have an R34 service manual for the body do you? Have found plenty for the engine and drivetrain but nothing else
