Headlight Restore Kit

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I am looking to get opinions on whether the Meguires lens restoration kit is any good or not? I have faded headlights, and i think it is all external and this kit seems like a good place to start.

Is this any good, or are there other products you would recommend?

Finally, is there anything else I need, i saw something about UV protector or some such?

Cheers

Hi Lemonnuff31, I had this same issue. My headlights were getting opaque with a slight yellow tinge. I didn't purchase a kit and opted for three of the lightest grit sandpapers to use in conjunction with plastX and a polish buff drill bit....think i saved 20 bucks or so doing it this way. It did the job nicely and i was happy with the result. I think with the plastics used on headlights these days the coloration and smokiness is bound to happen with exposure to UV and the elements. I don't think its a one off thing to restore headlights but a little job that needs doing maybe once every few years to keep them looking immaculate and clear. There is science behind different plastics and how they react with varying chemicals and when i cleaned mine i didn't get to finicky and just went with the most tried and tested approach. When i do mine again ill be using the Meguires Kit you mentioned.... It comes with the plasiX included in the kit.

bought the decent kit from autobarn... looked immac for about 3 months then the UV sealant started to look patchy like it was flaking off and the yellow started to return... think next time I do it im just going to use a polishing pad drill bit and buff the f**k out of them as a plastic s13 grill that was yellow turned out amazing with the buff pad

I have tried one of the kits (RainX kit). And if I had to them again, I would just be buying several fine grades of sandpaper and looking for the sealant on it's own.

I found the polish that came with the kit was next to useless. After using the sanding pads and perservering with the supplied polish, I ended up using my rotary buffer with a foam pad and a fine cut paint cleaner which did an awesome job of cleaning up the headlights after sanding. Made them look brand new. I then just applied the sealant the came with the kit. PlastX with a rotary buffer would probably work well too.

That was about 6 months ago, I live in North Queensland and my car is parked in the sun all day, and it still looks great!

can you get the sealant on its own? the last kit i bought had a whole bottle of polish and just a little wipe for sealant.

meguiars in US sells the sealant on it's own. may be able to find it on ebay

Meguires do make the UV sealant on its own. Only problem is they do not sell it in Aus....YET!

Invision do not make the sealant by itself. I did ring them and they said they plan to do a bigger bottle in the future amd sell the products individualy in the future aswell.

Will the invision pack you need to be sparing with the sealant. V35 headlights are exactly small.

Lol the Meg's stuff is useless shit! Last about 3 months, and becomes worse than before a lot quicker. Their sealant is .... Okay(loosely used) but doesn't last very long.

I used the glassylite kit off eBay( $35) and it lasts about 10months to a year. Pics?

Check out this shit

Don't have any before pics as I wasn't expecting THAT good of results. But it worked wonders.

  • 3 weeks later...

guys the resto kits all work great, toothpaste will work great....we need to find a good sealant which stops the degrading process and group buy.

must admit the kit i got from sprints, i think maguires, has still held up very well for months.

    • Took a little trip  went to nismo hoping the get my fuel tank hoses and unfortunately they told me they didn’t have stock luckily I was able to go to a Nissan parts store and they were able to order them in for me  then can home and cleaned the tank with some degreaser and fitted the new hoses before putting it back in the car
    • 100% I’ll hack into the 33. Strap a turbo onto the RB25DE and/or put the 25 head on a 30 block. 33 passed in cos the reserve was too high. I’ll try lowballing it again and negotiate. Aim is to have it landed and on the road for under 15k, then spend the same amount on top in mods.
    • It's generally best practise to run 1x run without VCT enabled, then 1x run enabled till redline. Overlay the two torque graphs and you'll find the desired RPM to turn off VCT. Sometimes, it might be even worthwhile turning off VCT earlier control torque/cylinder pressure and using VCT purely to spool the turbo.
    • They sell them in Malaysia for about $4
    • First time I ever have issues with Amazon, but my wife often tells me to keep an eye out for fakes. It finally got me. I wrapped up the conversation with Gates. The gentlemen I was talking to seemed to hate his job but the response time on their technical support is outstanding. He stated that the hose is marked with some variation of "SAE J30R10" but that if you only purchase a 1 foot length like I did, it is possible to get a cut between markings and have a blank hose. To no ones surprise, he stated the swelling and "gummyness" isn't normal and to replace/buy from somewhere else (He mentioned NAPA). I'll toss a small end of the new one in gas for a few days before pulling the hanger out again, just to be safe.  Hose should arrive Monday. For those running multiple pump in tank hangers, you know the joys of getting them out and back in. I'm surprised I haven't destroyed my level float yet.  Lastly once I wrap all of this up, I'm planning on hitting the dyno again in 2 weeks while I'm on vacation. I realized recently that my VCT is set to turn off at 5000RPM. I'm surprised it wasn't increased while I was on the dyno last. I'm expecting I can increase it to ~6500RPM, if not more. Should hopefully get another 15-20kw out of it. I also want him to revisit my knock thresholds. I'm occasionally getting false knock around 3000rpm.
