Formula 1 is to make another attempt to ban tyre warmers in 2015.

Previous efforts to introduce a ban have been scuppered because of safety concerns, amid worries from drivers about racing on cold tyres.

But as part of a raft of changes proposed for 2015, the FIA announced on Thursday that all forms of tyre heating devices will be outlawed.

The FIA has also ratified that the minimum weight of cars will increase by 10kg to 701kg in 2015 - which should help alleviate concerns that heavier drivers are put at a disadvantage.

Eric Boullier is set to become McLaren's new Formula 1 team principal after quitting the Lotus team.

Following intense speculation about plans for McLaren following Ron Dennis's review of the organisation, Boullier has resigned from his position as Lotus F1 team principal with immediate effect.

The Frenchman, who has done an impressive job at Lotus despite financial constraints, is now favourite to land the job at McLaren.

Lotus has confirmed that its owner Gerard Lopez will be its new team principal for 2014, and will share responsibility for running the outfit with co-chairman Andrew Ruhan.

Although the loss of Boullier will be a blow to Lotus, the Enstone-based outfit remains hopeful that it has a strong commercial and managerial platform going forwards.

Lopez said: "Lotus F1 Team has never stood still and we head into what promises to be an exciting 2014 season with an innovative new car, new partners and a new management structure at Enstone.

"Great things have been achieved over the past years and we need to continue this momentum.

"We thank Eric for all his hard work over the past four years and we are confident we can continue to fight as one of the top teams in Formula 1 over the seasons ahead."

Lotus is missing next week's first pre-season F1 test, but plans to unveil its new E22 car at the start of the second test in Bahrain.

McLaren is launching its own 2014 challenger at 12pm GMT today (Friday), although it is unclear if it will announce any plans for Boullier.

    • I don't know, I've never done it that way, but 1. While it is an interference engine, there is still clearance between the valves and the piston at all points in the regular timing cycle 2. There is not a lot of distance before you can't catch the top of the valve stem any more I don't know if 2 is greater or less than 1. But 3. If it doesn't work out you are f**ked, engine is coming out to disassemble so it is a big bet.
    • Semi slicks are horrible for road use, just use a high performance road tyre unless you really need the maximum grip. Noisy, unpredictable (amazing, until they are not), expensive due to very high wear and not good in cold and particular wet. And yes, it is a thing to store cars on stands instead of tyres if you know they are going to be parked up long term.....but who ever realises that a short park is going to stretch into years before it is out again!
    • I know in Australia you'll definitely get above 30c. Parked in the shade in Summer you'll be above that. 😛 But in cooler climates, you might get that warm driving on the highway for a bit, but you'd never get to full heat temp. I'll try and find some of my historical tyre temps between Aus summer and winter (be aware immin the warmer area of Aus too.)
