Garrrhhhhhggggg, does anyone know anyone selling a R34 GTT cat? Surely you must know Mat :-D, or whats the next best aftermarket cat to get? not so much for flow but for emissions, thanks.

If its for emissions you really need those Euro cats or stock ones... Aftermarket generally flow higher and may not get you passed the test!

In saying that, i sold my last one to BenRThirty4 on here...

Yayy, I have finally found a stock cat haha lol, gonna put it on tomorrow and change my plugs again, I must have damaged one of the plugs while gaping them because I've got a ugly missfire on idle and once I boot it it's fine.

Rightio heres another update.

I really hate myself right now.

Had a emissions test today after installing a stock cat, changing the plugs etc, farken failed and just, you wanna know why? Farking Crap Shell V-Power fuel and octane booster, even the testing dude told me that quite a few people have just failed using shell fuel, after changing to BP as he recommends it passes, now I gotta wait till Wednesday to get it re tested as they only do emissions testing on Wednesdays.

I can't drive my car from Friday so whippie no car again till that crap is sorted and my engineer signs off the papers, theres my rant lol, thanks.

Hey guys

Well from what I have read and from my understanding, especially now that Shell have once again changed their V-Power is that Shell just add way to many additives, and it's these additives that help you fail the emissions test because first of all the "cleaning" additives make the combustion burn hotter - first of all yeah this is kind of a good thing in a way as if the fuel wants more heat to combust it will help with detonation but by it running hotter it also causes you're car to lean out and also produce more NOx which is one of the things they test at emissions testing.

Secondly due to all their additives (cleaners, detergents, alcohols, colouring) you're seals don't like it, for example I've read on many places that peoples valve stem seals have started drying up and many link it back to the fuel - don't hold me to this one as you cant really pinpoint this although I kind of get how it could.

Again with all of Shells additive's it forms a film over you're plugs hence causing slight misfiring and also sticky seals.

Another down side is that their fuel is no longer as pure as it's stuffed with heaps of their additives etc and on another note of this, fuel consumption is increased (I've noticed much better fuel consumption with BP and alike.

I have been using and recommending Shell V-Power ever since I got into the car scene which has been around about 10 or so years, but lately they have really let me down.

I'm in no way or form trying to boost sales or kill sales from any company, just putting up my thoughts, research and experience.

Not sure how fuel could affect seals given that fuel goes nowhere near them.....

I run V-power and Caltex 98

Cant pick the difference, Plugs come out nicely etc

Id say its more the 20 year old cat, plus octane booster shit was your issue, not the fuel

(I've noticed much better fuel consumption with BP and alike.

Define this please.

I'm considering switching to Caltex (The wollies servo is closer than 7Eleven, plus the prices are cheaper. I find the 15c hike overnight ridiculous and don't but from the 7 Eleven until prices come down on par with the Woolies and Costco servos). Plus there's a bunch of 'save 4c/L' dockets at home :P.

Don't trust Caltex though.

Not saying that it was the sole problem for me, I said that it contributed to my last test with the octane booster, well thinking about it it would kind of impact the valve stem seals because when the valves open the gasses go through there hence to "POSSIBLY" contributing to early failure of valve stem seals.

Define this please.

I've only ever heard good from Caltex, my preference now is BP then Caltex.

I've stuck with BP Ultimate for a long time - used to run V-power but found car felt smoother and more km/tank out of BP. Could be placebo, though.

Take that with a grain of salt though, car has done < 1000km in the last 12 months (though I changed fuels ~ 4 years ago)

Back when my R31 was running good, I got an extra 50km from 55L fill up switching from Shell 91 to Mobil 91. All highway driving, same condition and driving style (I drove to Sydney to Kiama and back, two days back to back).

I put Caltex E10 (the only one they had) in the R31, it would stall on cold starts and ran a tad rough. Didn't do any testing with that fuel as I went straight back to Mobil for many years of happy motoring.

Used BP 98 a few times, ran the same as Mobil, but they generally are more expensive so no point using BP.

Chemist says,"Placebo effect is good!" :P

Funny how Ash is somewhat affiliated with Shell.

Umm no Tats is affiliated with Shell, pretty sure Ash is on his own :teehee:

BTW the new Shell ad says:

Can anyone tell me how a fuel could possibly add zip or vroom? Or is it just false advertising.

    • For these last 7 years of ownership, I've always had to use a small scissor jack under one of the front tow hooks to raise the front just enough so my low-profile jack fits under to reach my subframe jack point. I'm beginning to get annoyed of always having to do this. Are there any lower low-profile jacks that fit under the gtr lip on a dropped car?
    • Seat of the pants assessment of the new intake: The car is way less "doughy" when hitting the loud pedal, especially off idle when stopped or in traffic, I did use a cheapo lazer thermal thingo to measure the temp around where the pod filter got its air, it was between 55 - 60°C, in saying this the car was shut off and not moving, so the OEM intake pipe was not supplying any fresh air to where the pod was when the car was at least moving A weird bonus was induction noise on the throttle in the cabin increased a bit,  I was worried that I was actually going to lose some of that induction noise I love so much, outside though, when I got the daughter to do a WOT drive by pass for me, the induction noise has increased alot when on the throttle, not quite ITB doort, but well up there I'm extremely happy with the results and have been exploring the country roads in the region  As for house mods: 1.New front fence is up and is awesome, it really upgraded how the joint looks from the street, and the added security is nice 2. Electricians have replace some interior lights, and with more lighting in the garage, a few new motion detecting lights out the front above the garage, front room, and at the front door, which I have already found heaps helpful coming and going, also now has fancy pants CCTV all round the house The only hold point for power though is the solar and batteries due to supply issues, although this will happen over the next few weeks 3. I have done a heap of landscaping out the front and I'm almost ready to do a new small retaining wall with some nice blocks to replace the brick and cemented in rocks around the raised garden beds cemented in river stone "was the fashion at the time" the house was built. I currently have a pallet of retaining wall blocks and 2 bulka bags of 20mm blue metal to replace the wood chip that is in the raised garden beds around the house 4. I now have 3 big raised garden beds for out the back to grow some vegetables, about 70cm high, 200cm long and 100cm wide 5. My 2 compost bins are already pretty full with brown, green and kitchen waste from the landscaping I'vedone so far, but they will probably take a few months to break down, so anything else that gets chopped, trimmed, and kitchen waste will just start filling the base of the raised garden beds to about 30cm before I start throwing 40cm of good compost, and stuff, for the vegetables to grow in, I'll need a few ton of compost and soil, but the local supplier can sent me bulka bags of the stuff Basically the logs, wood chips and a few strategically placed rocks for drainage, will give the beds some good organic materials down low to break down over time, and they will hold moisture during the warmer months to save the water in my big arse water tank if we don't get alot of rain So, all in all, the car and house mods are going well, and I'm really enjoying being retired, I sleep in too 0700 and slowly plod around inside until I feel like actually doing anything, and only work in the yard for as long as want, which has actually been alot over the last few weeks,  although when you look at it, it seems that not a huge amount of work has been done,  until I look at the before I started the work pics Happy days and good times indeed
    • hahaha yeah. Plan is to get side skirts and probably just rear pods. But going to do them one-by-one. I've got a set that I really like from RHDJapen, but that one isn't shipped to AU. So need to find someone who can get it for me
    • Here's an idea, answer the questions I asked you as they are trying to work out WHY the LSD will be binding up in a straight line.
