Sounds like you are on the right track.

I know that with stock dwell ls coils misfired at 15psi plus with me. Below that no worries.

Once dwell sorted they are sweet as!

Looks like it's straightened out now.

I have not tested the MSD coils - But so far have found no aftermarket items that match the spark plug current provided by the OEMs.

Accel also makes a D585 copy that I intend to test when I get the time.

Good to go! Started right up faster than my old Splitfire coil packs and no throttle modulation on cold start like I used to have to do to keep the idle from dying before warming up. That's impressive. Going to take the car out for a spin in the next day or two to see how the boost holds up with stock dwell.

Regarding the aftermarket coils, it is my understanding that there are varying qualities and while pretty much all of them are made in China, many of the OEM's are also made in China. The coils I bought are made by Araparts and they seem to have a decent reputation and on Amazon most of the reviews for these coil packs are "5" with only a few "4"'s. I should find out soon enough if the aftermarket ones can't stand up to the abuse.

Rick B: Do you have any specific test data or videos that I can look at to see what you're referring to?

It is interesting all the Toyota and Mitsubishi guys swear Yaris coils are the go, yet RB owners are unwilling to try anything other than these tractor coils... :P

VQ coils are where it's at for Nissan engines. ;)

scotty, Toyota Guys in the US (and in Australia) are increasingly using the GM truck (not tractor) coils. There are about 400 of my kits out in the worldwide Supra community. They are built with an igniter (not just a simple switch transistor) that can build charge much like a CD amplifier. This enables the use of increased dwell for more output. I have also verified that the D585 produces more plug current than the stock 2J coil given the same dwell, even using the HK$ DLI. These coils were put on flex fuel vehicles and were designed for increased spark power. The genuine AC Delco D585 coils are mostly made in Mexico.

Rick, I have done some coil testing using a current probe and an oscilloscope to monitor output current, in addition to looking at igniter current across a shunt resistor. These two measurements give some insight into coil saturation point as well as ultimate spark power. My cheap current probe does not deliver values easily translated into amperage, but does make an excellent tool for comparisons. I am a retired test engineer, and still love this geeky stuff. Just wish I could afford better equipment.

The link shows comparison between the GM D585 and the Toyota 2JZ- GTE coils with DLI box. I was trying to test the 1ZZ coils (same as the Yaris I think) but they didn't like the shunt resistor so those results are not valid. I did later verify that the 1ZZ provides about the same spark output as the Supra TT coils sans DLI.

I have similarly tested several "parts store" type coils and found that none of them provided the performance of the "real' D585s.

I do plan on doing more testing with better documentation when I get time, especially interested in the MSD and Accel parts.

If it's the GM part 10457730 ( and actually has that number on the box) , That's the genuine AC Delco D585. Lots of cheap AC Delco BSC-1251 on ebay, advertised as D585/BSC-1251 - Made in China. I actually ordered a set of these and tried them on a customer car - on the dyno they worked fine until about 20 psi, then started to misfire. My bench test confirmed that they just don't deliver the plug current of the OEM part. I contacted AC Delco the see if this was a real branded part, and they confirmed that it was - a lower cost, lower performance coil.

Tons of these in American junkyards - the used coils have been super reliable in the field.

Have you tested any of the OEM Honda coils, my tuner swears by then and suggested me to upgrade to them on my BNR34

I currently have the splitfire coils rewired to get direct current from alternator and at 28psi I run out of spark :(

I am using Denso IQ24 plugs, if it makes any difference

Pointing an oscilloscope in the general direction of the output of a coil won't tell you the full story, coil efficiency and voltage output would perhaps be a more important measurement. I like to test things like this in the real world, no amount of bench testing makes up for a good hot load test at high boost and running rich.

Personally the timing drift associated with mucking around with dwell on these scares me. I would prefer something that just drops in and allows 40psi at 1.1mm, like the Yaris coils apparently do. I will give some real world feedback on them soon seeing they are in and running fine on my evo.

After running my original 13 year old VQ coils to 40+psi I have great respect for them, I don't suggest them for any other reason other than they work, I have nothing to make out of it...

XKLABA, I have not tested the Honda coils - Maybe will take a look next time I set up the bench.

scotty, Even if you could understand the test criteria I use, I doubt that it would change your made up mind. The testing I did was mainly to compare two known good systems as used in the 2J world. It was not meant as a substitute for real world function, which incidentally has supplemented and validated my testing hundreds of times over.

The overdwell characteristic of the truck coils is well documented and is totally in control and safe by correct EMS setup.

I have seen many of the local Nissan guys using the VQ coils with good results.

Sorry I called your baby (Yaris coils ) ugly....

Do the Delco coils have inbuilt ignitors ?

As for the igniters, yes, they are built into the D585 coils.

Okay, so I just tested my "parts store" made in China Araparts D585 coils and I have to say that I am pleasantly surprised that it ran a full 32psi of boost with no misfire. Although, I didn't do a full run through all the gears to redline, I thought if it was going to break up at all I would have seen or noticed it. Now, I haven't talked to my tuner yet about changing the dwell so I assumed that my HKS FCon V-Pro was still set at stock dwell settings. I'm thinking that either the dwell was already increased with the Splitfires that were in the car before or the HKS ECU is doing something that I don't know about.

for stockish application providing the coils are in good condition the 2500ms or so dwell the factory ecu uses works well, at 3000ms dwell at 15psi on stock turbo and stock engine they can ignite a richer than 10:1 98 ron fuel mix at 7000rpm that the factory coils couldnt. ( this was before tuning the car hence the stupidly rich mix from a ecu basemap)
and for what its worth it would idle and free rev fine at 500ms to lol. (small mistake in entering updated dwell on ecu)

    • As discussed in the previous post, the bushes in the 110 needed replacing. I took this opportunity to replace the castor bushes, the front lower control arm, lower the car and get the alignment dialled in with new tyres. I took it down to Alignment Motorsports on the GC to get this work done and also get more out of the Shockworks as I felt like I wasn't getting the full use out of them.  To cut a very long story short, it ended up being the case the passenger side castor arm wouldn't accept the brand new bush as the sleeve had worn badly enough to the point you could push the new bush in by hand and completely through. Trying a pair of TRD bushes didn't fix the issue either (I had originally gone with Hardrace bushes). We needed to urgently source another castor arm, and thankfully this was sourced and the guys at the shop worked on my car until 7pm on a Saturday to get everything done. The car rides a lot nicer now with the suspension dialled in properly. Lowered the car a little as well to suit the lower profile front tyres, and just bring the car down generally. Eternally thankful for the guys down at the shop to get the car sorted, we both pulled big favours from our contacts to get it done on the Saturday.  Also plugged in the new Stedi foglights into the S15, and even from a quick test in the garage I'm keen to see how they look out on the road. I had some concerns about the length of the LED body and whether it'd fit in the foglight housing but it's fine.  I've got a small window coming up next month where I'll likely get a little paint work done on the 110 to remove the rear wing, add a boot wing and roof wing, get the side skirt fixed up and colour match the little panel on the tail lights so that I can install some badges that I've kept in storage. I'm also tempted to put in a new pair of headlights on the 110.  Until then, here's some more pictures from Easter this year. 
    • I would put a fuel pressure gauge between the filter and the fuel rail, see if it's maintaining good fuel pressure at idle going up to the point when it stalls. Do you see any strange behavior in commanded fuel leading up to the point when it stalls? You might have to start going through the service manual and doing a long list of sensor tests if it's not the fuel system for whatever reason.
    • Hi,  Just joined the forum so I could share my "fix" of this problem. Might be of use to someone. Had the same hunting at idle issue on my V36 with VQ35HR engine after swapping the engine because the original one got overheated.  While changing the engine I made the mistake of cleaning the throttle bodies and tried all the tricks i could find to do a throttle relearn with no luck. Gave in and took it to a shop and they couldn't sort it. Then took it to my local Nissan dealership and they couldn't get it to idle properly. They said I'd need to replace the throttle bodies and the ecu probably costing more than the car is worth. So I had the idea of replacing the carbon I cleaned out with a thin layer of super glue and it's back to normal idle now. Bit rough but saved the car from the wreckers 🤣
    • After my last update, I went ahead with cleaning and restoring the entire fuel system. This included removing the tank and cleaning it with the Beyond Balistics solution, power washing it multiple times, drying it thoroughly, rinsing with IPA, drying again with heat gun and compressed air. Also, cleaning out the lines, fuel rail, and replacing the fuel pump with an OEM-style one. During the cleaning process, I replaced several hoses - including the breather hose on the fuel tank, which turned out to be the cause of the earlier fuel leak. This is what the old fuel filter looked like: Fuel tank before cleaning: Dirty Fuel Tank.mp4   Fuel tank after cleaning (some staining remains): Clean Fuel Tank.mp4 Both the OEM 270cc and new DeatschWerks 550cc injectors were cleaned professionally by a shop. Before reassembling everything, I tested the fuel flow by running the pump output into a container at the fuel filter location - flow looked good. I then fitted the new fuel filter and reassembled the rest of the system. Fuel Flow Test.mp4 Test 1 - 550cc injectors Ran the new fuel pump with its supplied diagonal strainer (different from OEM’s flat strainer) and my 550cc injectors using the same resized-injector map I had successfully used before. At first, it idled roughly and stalled when I applied throttle. Checked the spark plugs and found that they were fouled with carbon (likely from the earlier overly rich running when the injectors were clogged). After cleaning the plugs, the car started fine. However, it would only idle for 30–60 seconds before stalling, and while driving it would feel like a “fuel cut” after a few seconds - though it wouldn’t fully stall. Test 2 – Strainer swap Suspecting the diagonal strainer might not be reaching the tank bottom, I swapped it for the original flat strainer and filled the tank with ~45L of fuel. The issue persisted exactly the same. Test 3 – OEM injectors To eliminate tuning variables, I reinstalled the OEM 270cc injectors and reverted to the original map. Cleaned the spark plugs again just in-case. The stalling and “fuel cut” still remained.   At this stage, I suspect an intermittent power or connection fault at the fuel pump hanger, caused during the cleaning process. This has led me to look into getting Frenchy’s fuel hanger and replacing the unit entirely. TL;DR: Cleaned and restored the fuel system (tank, lines, rail, pump). Tested 550cc injectors with the same resized-injector map as before, but the car stalls at idle and experiences what feels like “fuel cut” after a few seconds of driving. Swapped back to OEM injectors with original map to rule out tuning, but the issue persists. Now suspecting an intermittent power or connection fault at the fuel pump hanger, possibly cause by the cleaning process.
