I own an auto 1998 r34 gtt and I'm thinking about getting a larger turbo (roughly 350 hp rated). With manual cars the clutch would need to be upgraded but would anything need to be upgraded with an automatic ??

Any replies will be greatly appreciated

Cheers, angelo

Yes, you need a shift kit and a transmission cooler for that sort of power.

What sort of turbo is it? Usually people say the brand or part number, not just the power it can make. I hope this isn't an ebay chinese copy of a real turbo...

Okay thanks for that , really appreciated ! :)

And I'm not sure yet. It's out of some guys totalled gtst who said it was making that much power. It's a gumtree add and I'm trying to figure out weather to buy it or not. It sounds like it's the stock turbo high flowed but I'm not 100% sure

I don't like buying S/H turbos unless I can hear them running, but if it's stacked at least there is a legitimate reason for selling.

Depends where you go, MV Automatics in Adelaide apparently do a valve body swap service if you are mechanically minded, or get your mech to look into it? If you had a location I could possibly help more.

At a guess, the shift kit would cost $600 - $1200 fitted including fluids.

A trans cooler is $100 odd and can easily be mounted by removing the front bar. You should be able to manage that yourself, or find a handy mate and offer him bourbon.

I'm in Perth. Also thank you so much for all the help !!!

Also even if the turbos broken I don't mind. The guy doesn't know too much about cars and he's selling me the turbo, some injectors and an electronic boost controller for $400. Bargain of the year :D

So you'll need an aftermarket ecu or Nistune chip at least, a bigger AFM, possibly some oil and water lines and new exhaust and preferably a manual conversion!

also price for shift kit varies bepending on brand and if yo want a stage 1, 2 or 3 ect but just for a rough base line a stage 2 shiftkit for my old 31 skyline auto cost me 1290 fitted

I have gone from the standard shift kit to pretty much everything you can do to a R34, and the difference is beyond night and day. Absolutely absurd. I drove a stock one and almost laughed myself off the road.

You have two options

1) Stick with and upgrade the auto (no one really does this long term other than stupid me)

2) Go manual

I entirely understand why people driving stock Skylines pretty much go LOLZ AUTO LOLOLOLOLOLOOLO.

Talk to mv autos in Adelaide. I had a 34 box built full manual valve body converter etc for under $4000.

Manual valve bodies are absolute crap compared to an aftermarket programmable transmission controller. ;)

I ran 200rwkw through the Tiptronic and it was fine-ish. Then went 260rwkw+ and it was s__thouse -> converted to manual.

I'd suggest doing the shift kit early, should make the box last a bit longer. And the cooler. Plus anything else Scotty and Greg recommend.

(Also if you're spending little money on the turbo you will end up spending much bigger money on everything else around it. There's no cheap way out, really.)

    • Its a 2002 vr-x four VQ25DET, silver. Coil overs, lowered, polished alloys and sport exhaust. Bit of a project, was sitting in a shed for a while but runs and drives great.
    • I wasn’t able to replicate the sound anymore. It was a one time sound so maybe it was just coincidence but it was like small pebbles being dropped in a coke can.   should I try cleaning the MAF? It could be it’s functioning but dirty? I don’t know.
    • Update 4: Hi all. The car drives again! Haven't driven for long, only to store it in the garage again, but the test drive was successful. The coolant and oil leaks seem to be fixed for now. Temps on the engine were also very good, while moving I never even saw 80C water during the approx. 30 minute drive. Ate up all the coolant in the reservoir though so will have to fill that even more when I go to the car next time. One thing that pisses me off is that the RPM gauge is still f**ked, I even resoldered the board twice and used copper paste on the silly screws that are used as connections. Next time I take it out I'll take apart the board and fit new components, I'll see if I can get a replacement IC for it.  I have an appointment set for 22nd of September for the engine tune to 370hp. Alignment also still needs to be done. My hope is that I can get all the legal stuff over with by the end of this season. Anyone of you have advice regarding intercoolers? Currently there is an APEXI core fitted, one of those weird hybrid ones, 600x270x76. I don't think it's bad but it's not new and now I still have the chance to change it now to legally include it in the paperwork. Only issue is that the only options that would arrive in time are a HKS Type R intercooler or generic Ebay spec intercoolers comparable to a JustJap one. Ideally I'd order a Plazmaman but it takes over a month to receive which would mean making the car legal has to wait until next season. Would love to hear some input on this. Same story for my injectors, the previous owner was a nunce and put ID 1050x on the engine. They work but are obviously not ideal at "normal" power levels. But I don't see a reason to change them unless the tuner says it's necessary. I read online before buying a different exhaust that the top secret style rear diffusers won't fit due to the size of the rear resonators. My buddy and I made it work by slightly "adjusting the shape" of the mounting bracket and making some spacers out of 3d print for the mounting bolts. Fits like a charm. Just putting this here in case someone has this problem. Even the hefty HKS Silent Hi Power rear can fits without hitting anything.
