I stand corrected, but was under the impression that this was controlled by jumper settings in the unit, rather than fundemental differences in the amp sections etc.

If it is the same as the V35 unit, it is just a jumper in the unit, the unit is otherwise the same, with the exception of a larger/fanned heatsink on the output stage IC, obviously due to the extra heat generated by driving speakers instead of just an amp input.

I am using a V35 'Bose' HU on my non-bose system, but I swapped the heatsink/fan from my old non-bose HU.

When I say 'jumper' they are actually a soldered surface mount resistor which needs to be moved, very hard to find if you don't know where to look. again that is for the V35 HU, not sure about the V36.

Ah, I see. That said though, my PCB had no trace leading to pin 1 which is meant to be the remote power output for the external amp.

Still, you have me curious all the same. If that means I can convert my HU to line level output, it might actually clean up the noise floor.

Nick, on the earlier units you are correct . These are a different matter. They are either amplified or not .

So is it actually a better head unit, in terms of specs, or just optimised to drive the Bose amps and I assume low impedance speakers?

There does seem to be nothing on the facia stating the Bose bit, apart from the badging on the woofers and sub.

    • The chart of front pressure to rear pressure (with one being on the x axis and the other being on the y axis) is not a straight line on a typical proportioning valve. At lower pressures there is a straight line with one slope, and at higher pressures that changes to a lower slope. That creates a bend in the line at that pressure, called the knee point. If you do not change the proportionng as the pressure gets higher, you will suffer excessive pressure (at one end of the car or the other, depending on which way you look at the proportioning action) and then get lockups at that end. The HFM BM57, from my memory of previous discussions, is based on the BM57 from a different car (to a Skyline), with a different requirement for the location of the knee point and the distribution of pressure front to rear, and so is not a good choice for an upgrade on a Skyline. Here's a couple of links to some old posts, one from here, one from elsewhere. A lot of it pertains to adjustable prop valves, but the idea is the same.     • Yeah dunno why johhny posted that here with no context, just post on FB/insta bro where he put it up?  Laine had an off at T4 during Thurs prac, he's ok, car is less than perfect, they are done for the weekend, he can fill in the rest. Bando also binned it like 100m up the road.
