...to muffler delete, or not to muffler delete... that is the question...

I am considering deleting the rear muffler on my V35 Skyline Coupe and replacing the muffler with a custom Y-pipe, cutting the tips of the end of the factory muffler and having them welded back onto the end of the Y-pipe in the same position to retain a 'stock' and classy factory look (possibly spray paint piping blaaaaaaaack).

Who here has actually done this and what are your opinions on this affordable 'mod' ?

I'm not looking for performance gains, and I'm sure there won't be any... What I am curious though is if I would lose any low-mid torque from less back pressure? (Not sure how much this affects naturally aspirated cars)

Also, I am looking for an aggressive note... my V35 Skyline 350GT sounds brilliant all the way from 2k to WOT... so I can only imagine what it would sound like if we 'opened things up a bit' :)

The mid muffler is only a small resonator, it will sound hellish loud with the rear muffler removed.

I did similar on a Sirocco recently, running twin tips to the back, but I fitted a Varex mid muffler so he could quieten it down as needed. It worked great, still loud as fark though.

Mmm... I've heard no mention so far online of the exhaust being very loud without the rear muffler.... All the comments I've seen online have been that it's quiet during normal driving and a nice note with higher revs...

I definitely don't want it loud as fark... Just a much nicer note, that I can hear... compared to factory quiet.

As Ben said, just remove the rear muffler to try it. But, let me assure you, it will be loud as hell and sound like a giant awful fart when you accelerate.

There is a prettty good reason that all these companies sell HFCs, Y-pipes, mid-pipes and rear mufflers for hundreds/thousands of dollars - if it were as simple as removing parts to get a perfect sound, they would no longer be in business.

However, removing the mid muffler DOES give some extra sound and a tiny bit extra flow. If you are on a budget, I would suggest doing this first.

If I were to remove the mid muffler instead (at an exhaust workshop) could they just cut a straight pipe to replace it?

I did a fair bit of experimenting with sound on mine. It'll just be a slightly rumblier and louder version of the stock sound. If you've got the money, spend it on getting HFC's, then some custom piping to an aftermarket rear muffler like a Magnaflow, gives it a good note without being overpowering. In the end youtube is your friend, go searching for as many exhaust combinations as you can find, it'll give you a pretty good idea for what you want.

I'm sure this will be the same on the 35...but I have the 36 and I have a custom exhaust job done. I have HFC and an X-pipe muffler and rear muffler...the rest are just 2.25" pipes....It sound pretty damn nice after 2.5k....I can imagine if I had done 2.5"....itll be pretty damn loud.

Hey guys, what about replacing just the resonator with an aftermarket one that's affordable?

Any recommendations? Would it make much of a difference and be worth it?

After reading some feedback... I'm definately not wanting a 'raspy' exhaust note... due to straight pipes in place of deleting a muffler...

The videos I've seen on youtube of G37 sedans with a muffler delete don't sound all that loud... Is the v35 coupe a different muffler setup?

This is the one I have and would definitely recommend. Like it says, only slightly louder, but definitely improved "note", with performance gains.

If you enjoy the comfort of your car, you will appreciate an exhaust that does not drone or make you involuntarily reach for the stereo volume knob when you are trying to be quiet.

Also, sounds even better again after installing a turbocharger.

    • Have you done the Ignition Sync Wizard in the AEM software?
    • Find out what RPM it was idling at with the IACV unplugged. It's very weird that the rpm didn't change at all, and then it stalled. When it stalls is it nearly like a switch off, like you've turned the engine off? Or is it more stutters and sputters and coughs to death over a few seconds? Or does the RPM just slowly keep going down and down? Have you done a test of trying to start it with the AFM unplugged? Does it still die?     If you Follow Josh's advice on using Nistune to check the voltages (which is a perfect method!) if you see anything out of wack voltage wise, THEN get the multimeter out and read the voltage directly at the sensor. If the two vary, then you're now looking for a wiring issue vs a sensor issue. So be aware, what the ECU sees, may not be what the sensor is actually saying too...
    • You very likely need to get it on a dyno and tune it. My assumption is, you've got an RB25DET tune in it, which has a different manifold, different injectors, and different cams as a minimum. What O2 sensor are you running?   When you say it runs extremely rich from idle all the way to redline, is this just free revving it you see that?
    • I seem to the be only person that is using a Haltech 2500 on an NA motor, I've installed a Bosch DBW throttle body to the OEM intake manifold and am having problems maintaining AFR even with the wideband o2.  It will run extremely rich at idle and up to redline, but under load it will go extremely lean in the 20s and i'm essentially having to rev it over 4k and feather the clutch to get it up to speed.  I've read a few other threads of about the butterfly, it seems removing the vacuum to it is supposed to have it remain open, i've noticed no difference under 4k with the vacuum line to it plugged.  I'm hoping someone here has had luck using the NA manifold with Haltech, and if they happen to have a tune for it.  
    • I don't know any details, but I really wouldn't be surprised if they do it as a LHD only version, at least initially.
