hi i really want my rb20det to go harder. it comes onto boost at around 4500. i would like it to be quicker. it is semi stock, running a different coil pack, i think new injectors and maybe a different pump. i was told to get a boost controller to boost it up. its running 12psi at the moment, what would you recommend running on a stock turbo. just out of interest what would be a cheap bolt on turbo upgrade that i wont need to muck around with. im on a 1st year apprentice budget so it isn't much.

I would check it is a stock turbo and if it is check your cooler pipes, mine runs a 25 turbo and has full boost by 3200 max. Standard injectors are red so you can see if they are different, as far as power up on a budget 25turbo, front mount cooler 3inch cat back, remove mufflers depending on quality and 14 to 17psi.

seem like you have a r33/r34 turbo, high flow or you have some things to chase like checking for boost leaks, base timming off, bad cat

as for lag shorten intercooler piping, add adjustable cam gears, use an adjustable waste gate so u can preload the force on the actuator for more response or use an EBC

The only sane option here (and by far the most economical) is to take out the RB20 and put in a RB25.

Even a stock RB25DET with a basic Toshi Remapped ECU will run rings around a RB20DET with an aftermarket ECU, high flowed turbo, injectors and all that.

Do the maths, simple.

I've owned a RB20DET in the past, spent money to make it fast.. ended up selling the car because it was a lost cause.

I'm in a similar boat. Pun intended.

Your next step is a retune with a z32 afm, upgrade injectors if they're stock and a bigger turbo like a hyper gear or gcg high flow

Check out the other subsections of the forum for more info.

I think people are missing some rather tasty RB20 turbo combinations out there by not thinking outside the box. Personally, if I had an RB20 and I wanted good mid range and grunt I would go one of these , depending on whether you wanted a tad more power or a tad more response. If you can run E85 and bump boost from 18-19psi to 22-23 psi then you would think it would be a bloody good setup for reasonabel dollars.

Take one of these

Weld a Turbsomart 40m external gate to it and then grab one of these to slap in the housing and work on your std exhaust manifold.

With std inlet manifold, setup cam gears I think you would have a good setup with the durability of the RB20 that pulls some healthy revs and make better power response wise then the horrible hi-flows that are available for RB20s that dont seem to ever match the response of the my 20G setup and certainly no hope in hell of making the 310rwkws the 20G made

Rememebr that std RB20s have pretty durable pistons and bloody strong rods and with such a short stroke the piston speeds and bottom end loads can handle a fair wach of boost safely. E85 gives you a nice safety blanket but a quality tune on 98, ideally United 100 will give you pretty damn good results IMO

Turbo, housing and gate with modded dump etc woudl be 2k. Relatively straight forward installation and then just tune it up with Nistune, Z32 and some injectors. All up depending on what you do yourself and what you have to pay to get done you could have it all in and done for 4k ish. Frankly I wouldnt worry too much about the RB25 turbo upgrade...better off workign towards a better turbo setup as the CU and tuning is going to cost the bulk of the coin so may as well save until you can club it with a good turbo

what should i be looking for to see if its a stock turbo? would anyone recommend an rb25 turbo. is it a bolt on upgrade and what mods would i have to do to support a new turbo. if it is already an upgraded turbo, how can i get it to spool quicker and come on boost better. im trying to get the car ready for powercruise. also do i need to change the exhaust for a rb25 turbo because i have a screamer pipe i would like to keep. i will try to get a photo tomorrow to see what everybody thinks it is. the skyline is my first fast import so only new to this

    • Hi from Canada, Both of my calipers are starting to fail. My car is a 2005 M35 Stagea ARX and I can't seem to find any parts or any cross reference caliper that would fit my car. Is there a company or a similar caliper that would fit and I could replace the OEM one. Or if anyone knows where I can find a new OEM. Any help is very appreciated. Let me know!
    • Maf is a question mark but TPS  I have set at 0.47, the fact that I’m getting proper voltage range out of it with the key on leads me to believe it’s functioning properly. I’m getting proper voltages on basically everything. I still need to look up voltage ranges for z32 maf and test that
    • Honestly no not at all, but it’s a very basic tune, it’s stock injectors q45 tps and z32 maf. Other than that it’s a completely stock base map. The file is from nistune and from my understanding if it was tune related I would be able to unplug maf and tps and it would still start even if it was a really shitty start. I have tried starting it with coolant temp, maf, and tps unplugged none of those 3 togethor or individually changes anything

    • What does it look like with highway driving? And yes, I had a similar thought as Duncan. It looks quite similar in my Stagea and I have made myself accept it as normal. Might have to look into it some day   Highway gets as low as 10l/100km on my end so I'm not as worried about it being a mechanical issue. More likely just the tune on the haltech.
