No offence meant at all with this post...

But it is just a gts-t.

So send your turbo to hypergear and get it high flowed. If the bottom end goes. buy a new motor and slap it in. Don't bother rebuilding.

Much cheaper and easier.

None taken, based on that logic though, may as well go ahead with the GTX3076R :D

You are most likely right in saying slapping a new motor in would be easier and cheaper than rebuilding, with one exception. I won't know the condition of the new motor, for example it could pop in 500k's etc haha.

You could do it a lot cheaper with a stock mani and a hypergear , the SS2 is a GT3076 equivilant and can use internal gate and bolt up to your existing pipes..

The series 1 i purchased has this setup, not tuned yet though, also has some of these noises like yours, bit of a worry but no issues with boosting..

Yeah, that's true but I do want the new manifold etc haha. So I'll just have to bite the bullet and go the GTX. Is SS2 capable of 400hp? That's the magic number I'm going for :)

Yeah, as posted above it's good that the noise is coming from under the timing cover, I mean it's not but it's better than a knock IMO haha.

The timing belts tend to be noisey for some reason and yes the SS2 will easily do 400hp, its a big mofo..

I'd be careful you dont create somthing laggy, if you only using 98 then a 6boost mani and GTX3076 will be nothing nothing until about 4000-4500rpm.. think of it as more like a GT35

I ran one with E85 and stock mani, absolute weapon with 20plus psi, but still nothing til 4000rpm then its beast mode..

Yeah, but this is not a normal noise nor anything that I've heard before, so far from normal.

Yeah, that's true but grown fond of the GTX after being in my mates one[emoji14]he had exactly same mods except HKS Manifold & .62 Rear Housing instead of . 82 Rear Housing. + I may be putting Cams in too ;) + bit of lag is fun I guess, just waiting for the boost to kick in and then BAM!

May run E85 in the future

Hey guys,

Update time again,

So dropped my car off to HyperDrive this morning:

post-104024-0-86362200-1460622772_thumb.jpg

They investigated the "knocking" noise I had + my boost issue.

So, just picked it up and they have advised me that my Exhaust Camshaft has Retarded the timing due to an issue with the Cam Gear. This is the cause of both my lack of boost, as the timing has been Retarded and the noise I heard and thought to be a "knock"

They said my options are:

- Replace Exhaust Camshaft for another RB25 Ex Camshaft. But I won't know the condition of it etc

- Buy Tomei PonCams

Needless to say, I decided to buy Tomei PonCams. This will only help me reach my goal and include responsiveness when it comes to Turbo time!

Just waiting on Nengun to confirm if they have PonCams ready to go, or if they need to be made.

Looks as if this is a blessing in disguise as I was on the fence whether to include Cams in my Turbo upgrade, now I kinda have to

I will update you guys as the situation progresses.

As always, :thanks: for reading. Until next time!

That an interesting diagnosis from them, i have never heard of it and cant understand it .. you sure they arn't pulling one on you?

The exhaust cam is bolted to the sprocket, it can not just move retard or advance unless you have an adjustable sprocket, the CAS also goes in on some gears so its bit odd whats been said to you..

I only loosely understood what was being said, as I'm not heavily mechanically minded. I will follow up with the tuner and write exactly what he says haha. They've never been dodgy to me, quite the opposite. They've fixed all the issues I've made haha, eg Head Swap -_-, that was a nightmare.

I'm with angry rb. That diagnosis makes no sense that it's the cam that is somehow damaged and needs replacing........

As above, will fill you in with exactly what the tuner says. They have never tried to be dodgy to me and also a lot of my friends get work done there with no issues etc. It's most likely a case of me saying the wrong thing or explaining it wrong!

Woahh. Cant wait to see how your 33 responds to new poncams. So curious and looking forward.

Yeah, me neither! Will only help reach my goal when I do the Turbo upgrade too. Should see boost earlier on the GTX3076R now & have a little low-end/mid-range improvement.

Hey all,

So, got in contact with Nengun. They had 1 set of the PonCams left and were going to hold them for me until Monday, after that, if they sold I'd need to wait 3 months for new Camshaft's to be made

Needless to say, I just brought them :D

Now to await them! Cost me $800 delivered. Camshaft's were only $650, but postage was the silent killer -_-

Will update as above (AngryRB & BenC34)

Until then!

So, as I thought looks like I was saying the incorrect thing originally.

So, based on this picture (this isn't mine):

post-104024-0-20656800-1460881636_thumb.jpg

------------------

See how this Camshaft has the rounded teeth? Mine aren't like that, they are flat and worn out. Which is causing the timing to change as the CAS moves around on the teeth instead of being locked where the timing is set. I hope this clears things up and makes sense.

Two of my good friends had the same reaction at first, then when I got a better explanation from my Tuner they both agree it makes sense and sounds legit now. So, a case of me not explaining things properly

On that note, can't wait for the new Camshafts to arrive! :D

I reckon that gear above looks normal, every exhaust cam ive seen has rounded gear like that, the cas matches the roundness as far as i know...

The poncams will be good though, more midrange

Good thread man, Im enjoying the read.

If your keen on a GTR then get one when the times right. I started with a gtt, was in a similar dilemma as you as my gtt lost compression and needed a rebuild. My dream was to always have a r34 GTR and the money I didn't spend rebuilding the gtt went to the Nur spec I bought 5 years ago. Needless to say, I still own the gtt and has been sitting in the garage for 5 years collecting dust. I may rebuild the motor this year and turn it into a track car. My advise, get your house, keep the gtst (evem if the motor blows), get a GTR, all in good time though. Never sacrifice quality of life for a car. As you can see the more you 'play' with them the more problems you have. Build your life first and the cars will come.

Mark.. I've written above that ISN'T my Cam Gear. Hence why it looks fine! I was using that picture as a representation of what it should look like and that mine, does not look like that. Get it now? Haha

Thanks man, glad to see you're enjoying it!

Yeah, you are completely right! No point my biggest form of equity being a $30k car. I just got a little too excited I guess, house will definitely come first. At the same time though, I'm the same as you, I don't think I could ever sell my GTST. I brought her completely stock and transformed her into what you see today. I'd hate to sell it and then find out that someone wrote her off, as has happened to a mate of mine a couple weeks ago unfortunately.

+, gonna take my time in order to get a factory black S3 33R ;)

Unfortunately I don't think I'm able to consolidate the GTR into my loan. I think that the rules have changed, the bank now only gives you money based on the value of your house. Not extra for other expenses etc :(

Hey guys,

Still waiting for my Camshaft's, there was delay from Nengun due to the earthquake in Kyushu (only 100kms from their office). The staff took some time off to help make food for the victims of the area, which is awesome on Nengun's part!

They shipped my Camshaft's yesterday though, so hopefully they arrive shortly. Then I can have them installed and the car tuned AND HOPEFULLY, no more issues, so I can enjoy driving The Black Pearl -_-

In other news, had my engine bay spruced up by Optimum Touch Detailing, I don't have a before photo but I can assure you it looked terrible, still had dry coolant everywhere from when my Water Pump snapped, the bay looks a treat now!

    • You just need to remove the compressor housing, not the entire turbo. I would not be drilling and tapping anything with the housing still on anyways.
    • So, I put my boat on a boat. First of all, I'm going to come out and say it. Why is Tasmania not considered a holy goal, an apex that all road-legal modified cars go to, to experience? This place is an absolute wonderland of titanic proportions. If people are already getting club runs for once in a lifetime 30 person cruises to Tassy then I've never seemed to see it. It is like someone replaced the entire place with an idyllic wonderland for cars, and all of the people living there with paid actors who are kind, humble, and friendly. Dear god. After doing a lap of almost all of the place I've found that it's a great way to find out all of the little things that the car isn't doing quite right and a great way to figure it all out. All in all, I drove for 4 hours a day for a week and nothing broke. I didn't even need to open the engine bay. This is by all means a great success, but it has left me with a list of things to potentially address. I also now have a 3D printed wheel fitment tool which annoyingly hasn't got any threads in it to actually assemble it. I might be able to tape it together to check the sizing I actually want to use, but it'll likely involving pulling the shocks out to properly measure travel at least at the front, and probably raise the car while I'm at it, at least in the rear. I scraped on quite a few things and I'm not sure how else to go about it. I was taking anything with a bump at what felt like 89 degree angles. And address those 10 other tasks. And wash the car. God damn it is dirty. And somehow, the weather was perfect the entire time - And because I was on the top of Mt Wellington it turns out it was very much about to freeze up there. I did something I typically never do and took some photos up there in what must have been -10 and the foggy felt like suspended ice, rather than mere fog. If you own a car in Australia, you owe it to yourself to do it.
    • Damn that was hilarious, and a bit embarrassing for skylines in general 😂 vintage car life ey. That R33 really stomped. Pretty entertaining stuff
    • Hi, I have a r32 gtr transmission. Does any of you guys have an idea how much power it will hold with the billet center plate and stock gearset? At what power level and use did yours brake with or without billet plate? Thanks, Oystein Lovik
    • Saw this replica police car based on a Mitsubishi Starion XX parked next to a 'police box' (it's literally a box) in Hirohata, Himeji City in Hyogo prefecture the other day. It's owned by Morii-san who is a local Mitsubishi Starion enthusiast. According to a local radio station blog post, he always wanted to make a police car himself based on ones he saw in his favourite Manga comics.  As it's illegal to modify a car to look like a police car and drive on the road, Morii-san tried many times to get permission from Aboshi police station headquarters nearby. They refused initially by after they got tired of that they granted him permission. However, the car can only be displayed on private property and obviously can't be registered as long as the police livery is present. The car was completed at a cost of 1.5 million yen (US$ 10,000) in addition to the car cost. A location was chosen outside Hirohata Police box where the car can easily been seen from the street. Morii-san has two other Starion road cars, both widebody GSR-VRs.
