RIP R32 RB26DETT.

You provided me hundreds of memorable 4WD launches, many high speed track events, off street drag days and thousands of smiles from that angry bark and flames when I change gears at full noise.

Fùck you to whoever designed this component:

Hahahah ouch. Any pics of the bearing shells, crank?

Yep,

In line with the thread, I should post:

Engine/Car:

1989 R32 GTR RB26DETT

Type of failure:

Broken oil pump.

Factors influencing the failure:

Right foot and rev limiter.

State of tune of the engine:

It's stock officer.

Suspension and tyres:

Meh.

Oil used and service interval:

Martini 10w50. Third oil change the day before engine failure.

General comments:

About 8-9,000km since I built the motor.

High RPM, dropped the clutch, held it on the limiter until the car got to about 60km/h. Heard a tapping noise, pulled over and turned off the motor. Lifted the bonnet, thought something was hitting the fan, nothing obvious. Started the motor and heard a tapping noise from the bottom front, checked the dash and oil pressure was on zero, turned off the motor.

Shit eh, called towie for a lift home.

Very much so. Pulled down a Deutz 2011 4 cyl engine today were they left it uncovered for a bit slapped a new head on it and started it, give you a hint crank+rust+main journal = $20,000 rebuild hahahaha

Hi everyone!

just wanted to ask a quick question, but does anyone have any idea to why my HICAS light comes on when its a warm day and im cruising in a straight line? Im driving a series one r33 gts.

Seb

Do you have aftermarket steering wheel?

Could be the sensor.

I have aftermarket steering wheel & I found my HICAS to be a hit or a miss basically, when I was doing my ~400km trip to Albany, at 1st the HICAS light came on after about 1/2 hour of driving then when I stopped for a break (turned the car off) at the 150km mark the light didn't bother to come on for the reminder of the journey.

*** sorry, wrong thread! Was using iphone while severly pissed off at the time (car stalled in major intersection during peak hour)

however still need help!

Engine/Car:

1995 R33 GTS25t - RB25DET Series 2

Type of failure:

Spun bearing

Factors influencing the failure:

Not too sure - shit happens

State of tune of the engine:

PFC tuned - been running fine on the same setup / tune for years

Suspension and tyres:

Hot bits adjustable coil overs - Kumho Ecsta KU36 235/45/R17

Oil used and service interval:

Motul 8100 - every 5000kms

General comments:

Last service was 500kms ago. Was running fine, pulled into my driveway, heard loud knocking from the engine bay, thought it was the main fan hitting intercooler but alas it was not.... Engine swap happening in a month... O_o

r32 gtr oil pump failure at just under 400whp. early 32. failed on dyno and was caught at the exact moment, then shut off straight away. bearings rods and pistons are all like new. i could have put them straight back in with a new oil pump and collar. this was a perfect car when i got it, had never ever been modded at all. but one thing i noticed when doing a belt change was how easily the balancer came off. they should be painful to get off  was rpm limited at 8000, any stock motor should be 75000 imo. plus i rarely exceed 7500rpm now anyway lol.

Engine/Car:

1989 nissan sivlia , r34 rb26dett

Type of failure:

broken oil pump, damage unknown atm

Factors influencing the failure:

bogan local mechanic not tightening harmonic balancer bolt to spec.. i think?... and limiter

State of tune of the engine:

mircrotech, standard turbos 361rwhp

Suspension and tyres:

d2 coilovers, federal 595

Oil used and service interval:

castrol edge 10-60 every 5000km

General comments:

driving home, hit 3rd gear limiter... started smelling smoke, then started seeing smoke... turned off... quick under bonnet inspection looked ok, started car and the head was noisy, no bottom end rattle yet... after pulling engine found harmonic balancer bolt loose..

EDIT: and since everyone else says there limiter, mine was at 8250 and hit it maybe 20 times a day... no working tacho in silvia and wheel spin = limiter bash lol

Engine/Car:

R33 GTST S2 RB25 det

Type of failure:

Low oil pressure, oil light is on.

Factors influencing the failure:

oil pump, oil pressure switch.(the light only comes on at idle, and the pressure is bellow the half way mark just quarter of the way up.)

State of tune of the engine:

Saf fc 2, tuned at 10psi does 210rwkw

Suspension and tyres:

19" rim, HKS coilovers

Oil used and service interval:

only used Motoul Turbo light and serviced every 5000 km

General comments: the light only comes on when car is on idle and my catalyic converter is hollowed and got a hole dont know if it plays a part but getting new one in few days. gonna buy oil and top it up tmz just incase its hasnt got enough. but want to know what could cause this light to come on, could it mean i need new oil pump, or oil pressure switch and if this is common problem need help with this thanks guys.

011 - 11:15 AM

could just be a dodgey reading from the sender. have a look under the oil cap to see if oil is getting to the cams ...

because my engine has done 230 000 ks do i need to use a thicker oil because thinner oil now burns quickly. i use the 15w40, maybe i should use a 20w50 or 60???

    • Sorry, are coilovers ACTUALLY ILLEGAL in NSW? They aren't in Vic, as long as they retain 70% of stock travel and the car is above 100mm off the ground. Does NSW actually have a law making coilovers actually illegal? RWC/Blue Slip/Engineering people not knowing the actual f**king laws boils my blood. Demand them to point to the documentation that states a coilover is illegal. (it may exist in NSW )
    • But seriously, can we ask for the results of the "tip a bottle of metho into a nearly empty tank" experiment?
    • Hang on. Let me get this straight. The desire is to have coilovers, BC in particular, to be MORE comfortable on Sydney roads than stock suspension? Well, that's obviously not right. BCs have crude damping design at the very best, and typically hard spring rates. BC stands for Billy Cart. And then, the desire is to put in some shitty old worn out stockers, to get it blue slipped and then put the BCs back in? And then.....what? Not worry about getting pulled up by the Plod? Because you seem to have raised a worry about paying for engineering (which actually does solve all your legality problems) and still getting pulled up.... but the only problem there is that if/when that happens you have to show your paperwork at the inspection station. Whereas, if you just swap in borrowed shitty old stockers to get it slipped now, and then you get defected in the future, you have to go find more shitty old stockers then too. You course of action looks like this set of options: Buy brand new stock type dampers, and springs. probably cost a bit more than $1k all up, but will last for the remaining life of the car. Put them in, pass inspection, drive on them forever more. Hell, they could even be really nice Bilsteins and Kings or other lower&stiffer springs if you wanted. Get the car engineered as is. ~$1k. Buy new Shockworks coilvers (or MCA) and also pay for engineering. You're spending a lot more here. But these will be the best things that you could drive around on.
    • Might be worthwhile hitting up Facebook's groups, I know most of them contain terrible people and scammers - however you might be able to find someone that's in Sydney with factory suspension you could purchase and/or hire. Just do not send any form of money anywhere, in person cash only.
