All,

engine forge rebuild with full balancing however it smokes which is minimal and i think it is due to rich mixture as can smell fuel

pcv is to air so manifold return is blocked off.

When on i can see mist of smoke on idle from catch can which is strange and wanted to seek opinion here before going back to tuner

Has anyone here followed the hpacademy as looking to learn and tune the ecu myself . I have purchased their engine rebuild course and it is quite good

Did you run it in hard with mineral oil or baby it with synthetic oil? If you don't run it in properly you will end up with glazed bores and rings that don't bed in. Have you measured your oil consumption?

Re the tuning do you have a wide band sensor installed?

By run in do you mean inserting piston or bed in?

i didn’t do it as tuner did and remember on one of the pics there was fair bit of oil in bore and he said it was the bore oil

it has done 300 miles since and expect to return and change oil at 1k ( bed in period)

I did ‘t rebuild but with a tuner having 10 years of experience and many skyline seen there then I would have though all rings are clocked( not aligned) unless he has given it to one of his workers and they have f**ked up

re run in, he did and I wasn’t there . I got it back after car had run in excess of 5 hours and currently on 300 miles of the bed in oil

would you use baby oil for first start up?

hmmmmmmm..

Need more info man. there are many reasons an engine can smoke, with different causes. But realistically you should be directing your questions and concerns should be directed to the builder.

You need to read more carefully. There is no mention of baby oil anywhere.

The run in procedure is important. I would want to be there.

To repeat a relevant question have you measured any oil consumption?

oh was going to bed and red it as baby oil :)

nope but will check it today. It has an extended sump with 7 liter oil capacity buffled  custom made

Yes, it will cause smoke if one got damaged or wasn't fitted properly.

A valve without a stem isn't a valve, you are refering to valve stem seals, big difference!

Run a compression test to see what all your cylinder pressures are that will show if the rings seated. I'd call your tuner up and ask him who built your engine to c if they reused valve stems or maybe didn't install one correctly or tell your tuner what's going on he should have the best insight on the topic.

    • It says 300ZX, does that make it an Aus delivered car? Funny how back in the day I just couldn't care less about Z32's and these days I am just in love with them. Back when Nissan was into pushing the envelope. 🤣
    • Hi guys, just after some guidance with an R34 sunroof that has stopped working correctly. It still opens and closes perfectly fine, but it no longer tilts/vents up or down. As a result, the rear of the glass now sags a bit as it drops down slightly in order to retract into the roof, but now it can't pop upwards into a flush position. I’ve probed the pins on the back of the switch connector with a multimeter and it seems like both switches (for open/close and tilt/vent) still work correctly. Any ideas on what it could be, or where I should even start in terms of diagnosing? I'm sure someone's had this issue before but I haven't been able to find anything online relating to this specific issue, most of the issues are with the seals leaking or the motor failing entirely. Thanks in advance!
    • Do you have some data like fuel pressure? It's really hard to say if you're still fighting a fuel system issue at this point. Could be something weird like the FPCM dipping out.
    • Yeah in that case, pulling the dent out. Event a very slight dent can create a lot of work filler-wise and there is a strong chance the panel won't be the factory shape when you are done (as the dent will result in a new high point created somewhere, then everything is brought up to that new high point... but the panel shouldn't be that high if that makes sense).  So you've filled and primed the panel and it is flat, why would you go back and remove the primer and add more filler?
    • Something else I have been faffing with while the car was off the road is making the AC work. Assuming the car isn't at a thermal limit the idea of having AC while waiting in line to go on track sounds delightful. I have actually been lugging around the weight of the entire system since 2018 when the RB25NEO went in without it working at all.  The main reason was in the first few events before I got around to re-gassing it the rubber hose that runs under the manifold had the factory heat wrap/sleeve fail resulting in this: ~2 years ago I purchased a complete used R32 AC line set but when I finally went to install it the line i needed was different where the expansion section is I found a local place that was able to replace the rubber section and re-crimp. They also added some modern heat sleeve to the hose Tight fit but fingers crossed this is the last physical piece of the puzzle needed
