Importing a M35 Stagea

I have recently become very keen on these cars and am looking at possible importing a 350RX, would go through an importer in Sydney. From the research I've done online low km M35s in good nik are going for between 5k - 9k AUD on the domestic Japanese second hand market, at the auctions the average price seems to be between 2k - 5k for stagea graded at 4 - 4.5.

I would say my current budget is 15k all up including compliance, 3 months rego ect. plus 1k for warranty from importer, is this reasonable?

Has anyone ever imported a M35 like I am thinking of doing? If so would love to hear about your experience with this, especially how much it cost.

Thanks in advance.

Out of curiousity, why are you looking at importing as opposed to buying one in Australia? Whenever I look at Stageas for sale there seem to be a couple of M35s available as well. It would save all the import hassle and allow to actually look at the car in person.

Don't have any import experience though so can't comment on it otherwise.

@soviet_merlin thanks for the reply, well I want a M35 that is low KMs and mint as possible condition, that's the main reason for wanting to import one, from what I've seen online these seem to be extremely common in Japan. Most of the ones I've seen locally seem to be high KMs or the couple that I've inspected that are low KMs have had gear box issues, rough paint ect.

I thought digital odometers were safer tho?

pfffffftt! Easier. Just plug a hack box of whatever type is required for that car and dial up the number you want it to show. No need to fudge with the physical wheels or drive it with a power drill or anything.

Hmmm, I see. Fair enough. Haven't closely followed it but it feels like a lot of the Australian ones are older models. Also somewhat cheap cars and treated that way. I didn't realise they were actually making them until 2007 according to Wikipedia.

I quite like the looks of this one below. The spoiler suits it! And it reads like it is owned by someone who cares about it. Would be interested to see what it drives like. Also how the 2.5L turbo compares to the 3.5L NA.

(Archive link as car has since sold: https://web.archive.org/web/20230205093612/https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/details/2002-nissan-stagea-autech-axis-nm35-auto-4wd/SSE-AD-14211882

But thinking that you may get a car that is 5 years younger by going the import way I can see where you are coming from.

Don't really have anything helpful to offer but looking forward to see how you go forward with this.

Yea that one look great actually, I like the look of blacked out head lights and grill.

I have driven the 3.5l n/a and can say that it is a fun one to drive for such a big car especially on the highway, definitely a cruiser. From what I understand the VQ35 is the better engine out of the lot and generally more reliable than and VQ25s which is another reason I would prefer it.

Iron Chef Imports has a pretty good rep. Try them, if you're keen on importing one. But like others have said, there's already a bunch here in Aus so you save the hassle.

Thanks for this, will look into them.

Yes, I had Iron Chef import my PNM35 9 years ago.
He is fantastic to deal with. Plenty of pics and has guys at the auctions who can check on the condition of the vehicle.

Pricing is also excellent.

Reference, my PNM35 came with 53,000kms on the clock and they were absolutely legit based on the condition of the car which I still daily (270,000kms), still performing well and still getting plenty of looks, comments and conversations. I think it ended up around $16k when all was said and done.

Highly recommended.

Awesome thanks for the info! My only concern is they are based in SA, I'm in NSW.

Looking to pull the trigger on this soon and from what I've read on the forums here prestige motorsports and iron chef imports seem to be the way to go.

That's OK, the car is in Japan....

I've imported through both of them (plus Just Jap and even Powerplay back in the day). I've never had an issue with any of them, the problems seem to be when you buy a car here that was imported for sale by someone.....klm go mysteriously missing and issues get overlooked in ads....

For reference, I'm in VIC. Interstate is not an issue.

    • I have been looking at some setting on the alarms for the Q60 and what buttons do and so and also been looking for details on the alarm in my V37 which is a standard issue with the car. settings like window roll up and a few others seem to not work at all. i cant seem to find exact info on V37 alarms so Q60 is all i can really go off i have not tried 400Z alarm settings or info yet so that will be next. any one got like a sheet of info on the alarm system in the V37 as all my documents are in japanese but i thought the system would basically be like standard through similar models?
    • I had a fuel smell coming from the drivers rear and pulled the tank out to inspect where it was coming from, turns out the breather hose from the tank to the filler neck was perished. I’m going to Japan next week and I’ll grab it while I’m there  pulled the oil tank apart and started cleaning this crap out of it, some brake cleaner and rags got it looking new again
    • Hmm. Was quite a few years ago now. I think I bought from a crowd in the US called CDT Audio. The speaker is the HD-6. The HD-6CF would have been the better option (based on T-S parameters), but they were discontinued in 4 ohm at that point in time. The HD-6 is a better driver in almost every other way (than the CF) - just not as good in IB. They still do the HD-6. They might even have a more suitable (for IB) option here.https://www.cdtaudio.com/cdtnew22/products/components/woofers/midwoofers/midwoofers.htm But, here's the rub. I was working in the US a lot back then, so I got them delivered to my US office and then just brought them back to OZ myself. I don't know if they will ship to OZ, and it probably wouldn't be great cost-wise anyway. As to results. They're driven direct off the rear channels of my headunit, because the headunit can be setup to run the rears as subs. So, not a lot of power being fed there. Nevertheless, there's no shortage of volume - the sub levels don't need or want to be boosted at all. The bass is definitely not what you would call "tight". It is definitely a bit delayed compared to a proper sub. But, with the great front soundstage and really good 6.5" woofers in the front doors, I'm getting most of the bass detail from the front and the rear is really only to extend the bottom end a bit. Works for what I'm doing. I mean - until recently you couldn't really hold a conversation in my car due to the fuel pump, and for many years I had tyres so noisy (Kumho KU36 at <50 tread depth) that I had to drive with earplugs anyway!
    • curious to know what drivers you chose and the results? quik mafs, says two 6.5s should roughly equate somewhere between a single 8" or 10" driver. i agree that IB is definitely the way to go in most cars imo.
    • S13 and R32 rear suspension geometry is horrible once you lower it (which everyone does). The camber & toe out ramp is very aggressive, hence it's common for the S13 boys/girls to use a S14 or S15 subframe as the geometry is light years ahead. I'm sure the same can be done on R32s, but I don't know anyone that has done that.
