i need some advice....

I am looking at changing a pair of turbo's on an RB26 as i want to get rid of the ceramic wheels. Now after doing the conversion i dont have heaps of cash and was wondering if there was a turbo, ie S14/15 T28 or similar, with steel wheels that may bolt straight up to the RB26 manifold and coolant/oil lines without costing an absolute fortune... i dont mind re-doing inlet pipework, but not really interested if it needs much more than that....

now before anyone tells me i shouldnt have done a conversion if i couldnt afford it blah blah blah it is more of a play safe thing i am thinking of doing rather than a have to do it cause i have lost the turbine wheels and got stuck out the back of whoop whoop with turbo problems..... and at the same time i am hoping the car can make some more reliable power :P:D:D

any help or recomendations would be greatly appreciated. if possible what sort of power levels have been made or could be expected would also be a help.

Alternatively i am open to offers of someone pointing me in the direction of some standard sized steel wheel turbo's that may be for sale.

Thanks Brad

ido09s,

a friend of mine has a pair of GTR N1 turbos which have the larger steel turbine wheel along with the larger compressor wheels and larger housings for sale.

awesome turbos for the street.

PM me if you're interested.

Nengun has HKS GTSS kits at a very reasonable price. Obviously no where near as cheap as second hand turbos, BUT they are brand new, ball bearing steel wheel HKS turbos - would be very nice at that money...

Richard

As an alternative you can get your turbos fitted with slightly larger steel turbines. Most people do the compressors at the same time, basically the spec is pretty much N1. Cost about $1,500, plenty of turbo shops do it, we use GCG.

Hope that helps

Thanks for that Sydneykid, i rang them the other day to get a quote for somethig like that. You must get pretty good rates with them cause they quoted me $1850 x 2 for new cores which is all they can do for me. Given that i would sooner spend the extra cash on some T517Z's and a retune from Advan :(:D:D but cash is my limiter at the moment :(:(:D

nengun currently have the GTSS kits for around the $3300 mark which i pretty cheap as long as you dont get stug by duty and GST

$3300?

Heres a link more indicative of the landed price.

http://www.nengun.com/product_info.php?pro...a0d38f7f9712a2b

Once you factor in the cost of fuel pump, injectors, ecu and labour charges(avg $1000 to remove and refit)and tuning the dollars go up.

My 2cents

If your on a budget get yours rebuilt with standard size steel wheels for around $1800(pair)

Boost response won't be as good but you'll be able to run over 1 bar without worrying about the wheels falling off.

That's about right for a core swap to ball bearing/water cooled, but that's not what I was describing. They stay plain bearing/oil cooled for ~$1500 (yep, that's for the pair).

Hope that clarifies :(

I think turbo tax was 5% when I imported turbos, so unless its gone down to 3% that site is wrong (but I also purchased my turbos from him)

Dont forget customs fees ontop of the tax and gst.

And make sure you get all your gaskets from him, Mine came with 2 short and ended up costing me an extra $70 from nissan

Not complaning here.. he provides a good service and price, just giving some tips

Just - the car already has pump, injectors and an ECU so upgrading bits like that arent a worry :D:)

sydneykid - when i rang GCG the other day they told me all they had was exchange cores..... i told them i just want steel wheels put in the stock turbos and they said they dont offer that service, they only do core swaps so damned if i know what shit they are spinning......

i spoke with Peter the other day and i think we will follow his advice and just wait till they give up, if they give up.... by the time i spend cash on steel wheels or different turbos i am $1000 closer to the T517Zs i wanna put on the car after tunign and all thelabour involved. Thanks for all the info guys, it has been much appreciated.

Now to find a thread on here from someone who has fitted Trust T517Z turbos to an RB26 :(:D:D

Brad,

Are you looking for a turbo with good low down response for the street? if so I wouldnt be looking at the T517Z.

I have had a ride in a car fitted with these turbos and was less than impressed with the response. For the money you would pay for t517z's, im sure you could find a good set of used 2530's or N1's - if not a new set of GT-SS turbines.

  • 3 weeks later...

How about getting N1 turbo's rebuilt? These were in the GTR32 when I got it and the front one has started to scrape the case, Bearings worn out from lack of oil changes!from last owner.

I like the response from these turbos.

Any ideas, short on cash at the moment and want to find out what my options are.

    • Hey all  im wondering if you can help me please I have put a rb20 box in my r34 gtt as my auto packed up and a friend had a spare box I know it’s not ideal but it will get me up and running for now. we have done the conversation and everything is working great but my Speedo we got a s13 speed sensor but my Speedo reads double now and I bought a speed converter but still not having any luck.  so I thought I’ll reach out and pick your brains  any help would be appreciated please as I wanna drive my car again
    • Drain it. I got official Matic D but you can get whatever is listed as Matic D compatible.
    • Thanks guys,  Yeah I should at least have them dynoed, at least then I know what I've got as a starting point.  The springs on these are hard as rocks. I vaguely remember Russman saying he was going to sell the shocks to me with the rocks fitted, as he was keeping the softer springs for his new setup.  I didn't click at the time but of course that was to let me know the shock/spring wouldn't be matched.  I also remember pricing up new springs around 2014-15, but, house, money etc. it never happened. So that was another reason to have them rebuilt. I have rebuilt the forks on many motorcycles so I think I could handle the seals on these easily enough, but getting the valving right would be a rabbit hole I cbf exploring.  Duncan, interesting to hear RP was tuning these back then. I might give them a call.  In the mean time I have been busy fitting sway bars. The Whiteline rear sway bar I purchased 15 years ago finally got fitted, along with the Whiteline front bar that showed up last week. Just waiting on new links for the front sway bar to finish that off.  And my spare set of advan AVS VS5's should be back from the powder coaters in a Pearl White finish sometime this week, with a set of Hankook RS4's lined up for fitting.  And then I just have all the suspension bushes to do. A comprehensive kit is on the way... Lots to do before the Ararat hill climb. Cheers guys 🍻
    • Nice car! I’m glad folks in the US have gotten past the FnF and are buying real cool cars like the 260RS I was with a bunch of mates in Portland about a year ago and spotted a green Stagea (just a regular 2.5T AWD) parked about 2 blocks away and they were like “a what?” So I made a bet with them for a round of beers and said “ok one of you run down there and tell me if the steering wheel is on the correct side” 5 mins later the American comes trudging back up the hill and goes “he’s right guys. Ok what beer do you want?”
    • Should replace OR drop the tank, give it's good clean. Might be worth replacing that entire fuel level/pump/cradle thing with this: https://frenchysperformancegarage.com/products/fpg-s13-180sx-r32gtst-single-pump-hanger-kit-billet-hat-6-v3-fpg-089?gQT=2
