Got a tow bar sorted for my M35 today...

Rated at 500kg unbraked and 1500kg braked (didn't require much capacity, only wanted to be able to tow the Jet ski for summer :) ).

Cost NZ$720 from North Shore Towbars in Auckland, NZ (Sorry, wont help you Oz folks, but if anyone in Auckland needs / wants one, go see these guys).

Thankfully they managed to accommodate the after-market rear bumper (Impul kit) and only had to cut a piece out about 1" x 2" right underneath so you can't even see it anyway and also had the tongue come underneath it rather than through it.

Anyway, some snaps for those who are interested to see the setup:

(Excuse the dirty car, needs a wash and the photos aren't the best quality but happy to take better ones when the weather fines up...)

Aka it will have a HR rear plug and a HR surround plate. There custom made.

wynnum towbars quoted $600 fitted for 900kg load.

He also said that there is no heavy duty metal to bolt on too so that towing much more than that wouldn't be recommended.

Qld tow bars and welding quoted $460 for a premade one from NZ, but they won't fit it as it is not complienced.

Yeah that's what I figured, I've towed cars and campers in my little 84 suby ej20t and haven't had a problem. 2000 model stagea has gotta be better equipped for something like that.

What weight was yours rated to?

P.S.

The wagon is for sale

You guys who are towing your race cars etc, are your tow bars legally rated to that weight. I want to know what happens if you have a prang towing 1300kg when your tow bar might be rated lower than that. Does the insurance company wipe you if your towbar is rated under what you tow.

good question!

my tow bar was rated by the manufacturer at 2000kg - but they are not engineers. And I would be very close to 2000kg because the car is 1500 and the trailer 400 (+gear on the back)

my "assumption" for what that is worth, is that it is like every other unengineered mod on my car. If an accident occurs and the insurer can show the unengineered part was the cause I would not be insured. and no doubt they would try their level best to blame those parts so they can avoid paying out.

On my car this includes:

motor

front mount intercooler

exhaust

wheels (17")

brakes

tow bar

tv

seats

tyres (too large)

powerfc

sway bars (larger)

and god knows what else.

I honestly don't think it makes any difference in 99% of situations. there is so much weight on the rear that there is plenty of traction in most circumstances.

where i think 4wd is a benefit is when you are doing the tight manouvering on a driveway, grass, hills etc.

Hey guys i'm new to this forum. just wondering if anybody has gotten one of those 'Max's' Towbars rated at all and if so what was it rated at? Bout to buy a stagea and want to get the biggest rated towbar i can. do they fit on the 1999 rs4 neo version?? or do they have to be modified?

any help would b appreciated.

    • What is the "compromise" that you think will happen? Are you thinking that something will get damaged? The only things you have to be concerned about with spherical jointed suspension arms are; Arguments with the constabulary wrt their legality (they are likely to be illegal for road use without an engineering certificatation, and that may not be possible to obtain). A lot more NVH transmitted through to the passengers (which is hardly a concern for those with a preference for good handling, anyway). Greatly increased inspection and maintenance requirements (see above points, both).   It is extremely necessary to ask what car you are talking about. Your discussion on strut tops, for example, would be completely wrong for an R chassis, but be correct for an S chassis. R32s have specific problems that R33/4 do not have. Etc. I have hardened rubber bushes on upper rear control arms and traction rods. Adjustable length so as to be able to set both camber and bump steer. You cannot contemplate doing just the control arms and not the traction arms. And whatever bushing you have in one you should have in the other so that they have similar characteristics. Otherwise you can get increased oddness of behaviour as one bushing flexes and the other doesn't, changing the alignment between them. I have stock lower rear arms with urethane bushes. I may make changes here, these are are driven by the R32's geometry problems, so I won't discuss them here unless it proves necessary. I have spherical joints in the front caster rods. I have experienced absolutely no negatives and only positives from doing so. They are massively better than any other option. I have sphericals in the FUCAs, but this is driven largely by the (again) R32 specific problems with the motion of those arms. I just have to deal with the increased maintenance required. Given how much better the front end behaves with the sphericals in there.....I'd probably be tempted to go away from my preference (which is not to have sphericals on a road car, for 2 of the 3 reasons in the bulleted list above), just to gain those improvements. And so my preference for not using sphericals (in general) on a road car should be obvious. I use them judiciously, though, as required to solve particular problems.
    • Easiest way to know is to break out the multimeter and measure it when cold, then measure all the resistances again once it gets hot enough to misfire. Both the original ignitor and the J Replace version. Factory service manual will have the spec for the terminal measurements.
