I know your taking the piss, but being serious for a moment, I think there is definately room in the Sydney market for another straight foward, no BS importer.

LW.

Well you know what - I am sort of semi serious and tossing around ideas - I need to speak to some people in the industry about it.

The problem is the 15 YO rule and what's gonna happen to it in the future.

SEVS compliance has also put a quasher on the Grey Import scene.

I've been suscribed to PM's search - for a car for my dad recently and you can still get some really nice cars you just gotta wait for the good ones. Not not everyone one wants to trawl through mountains of Auction data and not everyone wants the wait.

If someone local to Australia removes the risk factor and supplies good cars , no bullshit service then yes I think it would be a winner.

How financially successful NO BULLSHIT IMPORTS would be is another story  he he

Well personally I think thats the problem....when you think about the numbers you start to understand what dealers need to charge.

Say you buy a $15k (landed in Aus) GTST to sell. You have to add $4k for compliance, and of course you had to pay up front for the car but it takes up to 3 months to be on your yard.

You have to offer a warranty (say $500 insurance style). You will have to polish and detail the car when it gets here $500. And register it including the RTA inspections $1000.

Edit: You need to charge GST on the sale price, say $2000.

You have to employ at least 1 full time sales person, say $35,000 per year. You need a yard, say $25,000 per year.

None of this includes any profit for the business....so how much do you have to sell the car for?

Now remember that any person can buy that same $15k GTST thru a broker, add $1100 fee and the compliance $4000. And of course the private buyer never includes the cost of their time running around.

IMHO, Bottom line is No Bullsh1t imports exists at places like Powerplay Imports.......you can't expect to pay absolute bottom dollar for a good car from a dealer who is trying to make a living.....

It would, however be *much* easier to buy a $6K GTST and spend a couple of grand making it look good, then selling it for $18k and hoping the buyer doesn't notice. I'm not suggesting this is what Envy do, but there ARE plenty of dealers who do, and this is what NO BULLSH1T IMPORTS would have to compete with

I totally agree with you Duncan, My uncle owns a Ford, Nissan,Hyundi and BMW dealerships in Orange (alas no performance imports) So i know the crap he has to deal with. And import dealers have alot more to do as you said.

I was checking the prices from Prestige Motorsports, for there auctions and when you factor in everything, you can pay almost the same from a dealer here (who you can trust) and you get to drive , sit, look and checkout the car before you hand over your cash. All for about the same as they are asking to import ones now. Plus you get a warrenty

The only main difference i see in importing is you can get cars that have all the mods on, but, if its a not 15y/o car, these mods now have to be removed prior to compliancing anyway. Yes you can put them back on, but theres that labour cost on putting a second hand part back onto your car that you aren't sure about in the first place.

Oh and regarding the Budget Duncan, I will have the cash to fix what may go wrong with whatever car i do decide to get, its just that I am not a patient man , and couldn't be bothered saving for a couple of months to have a few grand extra. I would rather borrow now, have some fun and pay the loan of in extra quick time.

Heres a quicky for you though. What do you guys think of the pulsar GTi-R? Are they prone to problems as much as the skylines? I don't mind them either and like I said before, I am open to all options on what car I get as long as its Got a turbo, its an import and it looks good. But I am not shallow

I bought my R33 GTS25t.M/LSD from BEN @ Northshore Prestige in Balgowlah - May 2004. I did shop around first, but found they had good quality/price combination. There was also no bullshit. Couple of young guys own and run the business. Not a salesman in sight. They were happy to put it up on the hoist for detailed inspection prior to purchase.

Had some small problems (leaky exhaust, leaky rear shock, split in rear GTR wing, ABS & active LSD not functioning - due to broken wire). ALL were fixed under warranty - with absolutely no hassles or cost to me.

All up, it was one of the best retail experiences I've had. Bottom line is - if I was looking for another one, its the first place I'd go.

Good luck........cheers :)

I bought my skyline off Envy, and had them do all my initial service work.

I have nothing bad to say about them, they were very cheap, extremely helpful. I have heard ppl say negative things on here before, but my dealings with them were all great.

now that i have learnt alot more about the RB engine (thanks to this forum) i only use envy now to order my parts and i just do everything else, and they are always extremely helpful and very well priced.

i have a friend with one  hes blown his gearbox up 3 times!!! to me it sounds like a good reason to STEAR CLEAR (no offence to gtir lovers)

also i have seen lately on prestige that the r33's have the compliance included in the price and are still very cheap, so i could only assume that something has been worked out with compliance with non standard parts

:D he he enjoy the ride....at least while you dont actually have.... your ride :D

    • You just need to remove the compressor housing, not the entire turbo. I would not be drilling and tapping anything with the housing still on anyways.
    • So, I put my boat on a boat. First of all, I'm going to come out and say it. Why is Tasmania not considered a holy goal, an apex that all road-legal modified cars go to, to experience? This place is an absolute wonderland of titanic proportions. If people are already getting club runs for once in a lifetime 30 person cruises to Tassy then I've never seemed to see it. It is like someone replaced the entire place with an idyllic wonderland for cars, and all of the people living there with paid actors who are kind, humble, and friendly. Dear god. After doing a lap of almost all of the place I've found that it's a great way to find out all of the little things that the car isn't doing quite right and a great way to figure it all out. All in all, I drove for 4 hours a day for a week and nothing broke. I didn't even need to open the engine bay. This is by all means a great success, but it has left me with a list of things to potentially address. I also now have a 3D printed wheel fitment tool which annoyingly hasn't got any threads in it to actually assemble it. I might be able to tape it together to check the sizing I actually want to use, but it'll likely involving pulling the shocks out to properly measure travel at least at the front, and probably raise the car while I'm at it, at least in the rear. I scraped on quite a few things and I'm not sure how else to go about it. I was taking anything with a bump at what felt like 89 degree angles. And address those 10 other tasks. And wash the car. God damn it is dirty. And somehow, the weather was perfect the entire time - And because I was on the top of Mt Wellington it turns out it was very much about to freeze up there. I did something I typically never do and took some photos up there in what must have been -10 and the foggy felt like suspended ice, rather than mere fog. If you own a car in Australia, you owe it to yourself to do it.
    • Damn that was hilarious, and a bit embarrassing for skylines in general 😂 vintage car life ey. That R33 really stomped. Pretty entertaining stuff
    • Hi, I have a r32 gtr transmission. Does any of you guys have an idea how much power it will hold with the billet center plate and stock gearset? At what power level and use did yours brake with or without billet plate? Thanks, Oystein Lovik
    • Saw this replica police car based on a Mitsubishi Starion XX parked next to a 'police box' (it's literally a box) in Hirohata, Himeji City in Hyogo prefecture the other day. It's owned by Morii-san who is a local Mitsubishi Starion enthusiast. According to a local radio station blog post, he always wanted to make a police car himself based on ones he saw in his favourite Manga comics.  As it's illegal to modify a car to look like a police car and drive on the road, Morii-san tried many times to get permission from Aboshi police station headquarters nearby. They refused initially by after they got tired of that they granted him permission. However, the car can only be displayed on private property and obviously can't be registered as long as the police livery is present. The car was completed at a cost of 1.5 million yen (US$ 10,000) in addition to the car cost. A location was chosen outside Hirohata Police box where the car can easily been seen from the street. Morii-san has two other Starion road cars, both widebody GSR-VRs.
