After seeing the news and how the cops and vic roads will team up to "crack down on high powerd cars and P platers", i visited the vic roads web site to find that on paper, skylines are not written down as illigal cars for P platers.

Can someone please tell me why the vic roads website for illigal cars for P platers only have "skyline GTR" and 350Z as the only illigal cars? i mean surely even a non turbo R32 is over the 125kw legal limit? They do make a disclaimer at the end of each page sayign that " The list is not exhuastive" etc, but my question is why do they have Aston martin DB-7's and Ferrari 550's as illigal cars for p platers (ye no shit) but no silvias or gts-t's? surely common sense would come through here. How many P platers drive around in DB7's and how many drive around in Skylines and silvias and so on. What do you guys think about this?

The website could be seen here.

they list like every ferrari :D

r32+ weren't sold here... so they probably just added the GTR as they saw them emerging onto the roads... too lazy to research them and make appropriate changes? ...there are hundreds of cars not on that list.

damn i can't drive an Ultima GTR on Ps :DUltima.gif

Personally I know that sometimes when cops pull you over can get you for driving a over powered vehicle and you would need a fully licensed driver to be able to drive your car home. But I know a lot of police that if you don’t give them shit, won't mention it at all and just to a routine check. Thats the only thing i worrie about when getting pulled over.

All i know if that i'm sure sooner or later thier lists will be updated as it passed through people through vic roads...all in time :D hopefully not anytime soon for my sake but some some drivers it would be wise implement them. My 2 Cents

Here's the problem. Any imported cars that were never sold NEW in this country, don't show up in the system! That's why the R32 GTR and 350Z are in there, because limited numbers were/are sold here. It's a big flaw in the system... One of my old man's friends who works in vicroads has told me about it.. Techincally the cops can't tell you off because your R33 or whatever is not on the list, and therefore you can drive it because it doesn't say anywhere that you can't :D smiles all around.

There is no real way they can force you to obtain a power figure,

So behave and dont get pulled over is all i say. have fun.l

About Vic roads I’m more concerned about the quality of the actual roads we drive on which give me the shits every time I hit a pot hole etc and worrie about breaking something to do with my suspension.

ye tell me about it. some put holes around my area are like 20 cm's deep, no joke. they should really spend some of those millions of speeding fines they gete evry year on fixing the roads. There are so many dangerous spots as well. Like my mate for eg:, he lives in taylors lakes, and there is this road he has to croass (called roberts road for those of yous who are familiar with that area) they have to cross a freeway to get to the otherside, there is only a giveway sign and there have been about 7 fatal crashes there in the last 3 years. its such a joke.

But you are allowed to LEARN in one of these so-called "hi-powered" cars. The logic is that there's a fully licenced driver IN CHARGE of the vehicle. All well and good, but who's IN CONTROL of the vehicle. Classic case is that family killed up near Bendigo couple of months back, learning in a HSV Commodore.

Then, after you go for your test, assuming you pass, you're not allowed to drive the fn car home!!

aww ye i remember that. It just dont make any sense. You would ahve more control of any car on your P's then your L's. Imagine getting into a HSV GTS when u have never driven ANYTHING before? yet thats perfectly legal. I can understand that some houses may only have one car and the kids need their experince, but when u think about it, there is no sense in that at all.

dineath - the power restriction is 125kw per TONNE.. so if u have a 2 tonne car, and ur on your p's then your legally alowed to have 250kw's.... the r32gtst is just under by a bee's dick (.25 or somthein) but the 33 isn't. But because they are imports.... in certain places around police are educated (knox) and have been quite succesful in defect the crap out of import cars and throwing the full extent of the power/weight ratio at anybody who breaks it (wheather on or off the list)...

and the thing about HP cars on L's... driving on your L's is safer than your P's. Statistically L platers don't have many accidents at all especially when you compare it to P platers, even though P platers have more driving expieriece and better skills. I guess thats why L platers are still alowed to drive performance cars. But there are some exceptions, i've heard all different acounts of parents being total dickheads in teaching their kids to drive, this guy i know: his dad made him drive a car (on his L's) at 150km at nightime down a really windy road to see if he could 'take it'. 150k's might not seem that fast for a lot of you but to push a 16yr old with limited expierience way out of their comfort zone is asking for serious trouble.

It's interesting what you find when you actually bother to read stuff......

From the VicRoads site (just above the .pdf file you mentioned)

The file attached below contains a guide to vehicles that are classed as high powered motor vehicles. The Guide only covers standard vehicles that have been made in Australia, or imported in bulk, since 1970. It does not include all high powered motor vehicles. If you are concerned that a model not included may be a high powered motor vehicle, then you may be able to get engine power and vehicle weight information from the manufacturer.

"may be able to get engine power... blah blah"

i'm sorry, i wasn't able to get this information :D

Yep, as stated already. Hi-po cars are ONLY listed if they were sold locally via a manufacturer.

L Platers are the safest drivers on our roads.

I think this is a relatively easy fix. We all know that nothing magically happens when you get off your P's that means you can safely drive a hi-po vehicle. The easist way i see to fix this problem is still allow P platers to drive hi-po vehicles, providing they sit a COMPLETELY different test/s. Something along the lines of.

Stage 1: Normal everyday P plate test.

Stage 2: Defensive driving course

Stage 3: Advanced driving course (names arbritrary)

Stage 4: Performance driving course.

After the normal test, to pass the subsequent courses become INCREASINGLY difficult. Judge quite harshly.

Whether or not you'd have stage 3 i'm not sure. BUT i still think this is a good way to go. If you're a young driver and want to drive a hi-po car, by all means do it, BUT pay more money and complete a couple extra skill intensive and difficult to complete driving courses.

and that's my 2 cents :D

cheers.

i thought about doing one in my current 91 Pulsar hatch, but then i'll have a completely different car in a month or two? So i'm waiting till my R34 is ready, then i'll go do a couple of courses.

Am I the only one that does not have a problem with P platers NOT driving a GTR?

- J.

mate, im a P plater, my first car was 33 gts-t and about to get off my P's, but even i would not jump into a GTR. I mean a GTR is a race car built for the track. In the hands of soemone who just got their p's or even anyone whos only had 2-3 years experince on the road, getting into a car that has that much power is a bit of a joke. Thats not to say that there are some sensible P platers, (i know many) but i also know a lot of hoons and even if they crash and die its ok as harsh as it may sound, but its when they start killing innocent people thats when a car like a GTR becomes a weapon on mass destrucion.

I think a Gts-t is fine in the hands of someone who has a good head on their shoulders on their P's (and i know a lot of you guys here will argue otherwise, htats cool)

but a GTR is crazy.

    • The average previous owner for these cars were basically S-chassis owners in the US. Teenagers or teenager-adjacent. I often tell people that neglect is easier to fix than something that was actively "repaired" by previous owners.
    • Update 3: Hi all It's been a while. Quite a lot of things happened in the meantime, among other things the car is (almost) back together and ready to be started again. Things that I fixed or changed: Full turbo removal, fitting back the OEM turbo oil hardlines. Had to do quite a bit of research and parts shopping to get every last piece that I need and make it work with the GT2860 turbos, but it does work and is not hard to do. Proves that the previous owner(s) just did not want to. While I was there I set the preload for the wastegates to 0,9bar to hopefully make it easier for the tuner to hit the 370hp I need for the legal inspections that will follow later on. Boost can always go up if necessary. Fitted a AN10 line from the catch can to the intake hose to make the catchcan and hopefully the cam covers a slight vacuum to have less restrictive oil returns from the head and not have mud build up as harshly in the lines and catch can. Removed the entire front interior just shy of the dashboard itself to clean up some of the absolutely horrendous wiring, (hopefully) fix the bumpy tacho and put in LED bulbs while I was there. Also put in bulbs where there was none before, like the airbag one. I also used that chance to remove the LED rpm gauge on the steering column, which was also wired in absolute horror show fashion. Moved the 4in1 Prosport gauge from sitting in front of the OEM oil pressure gauge to the center console vents, I used a 3D printed vent piece to hold that gauge there. The HKB steering wheel boss was likely on incorrectly as I sometimes noticed the indicator reset being uneven for left vs. right. In the meantime also installed an airbag delete resistor, as one should. Installed Cube Speed premium short shifter. Feels pretty nice, hope it'll work great too when I actually get to drive. Also put on a fancy Dragon Ball shift knob, cause why not. My buddy was kind enough to weld the rust hole in the back, it was basically rusted through in the lowermost corner of the passenger side trunk area where the wheel arch, trunk panel and rear quarter all meet. Obviously there is still a lot of crustiness in various areas but as long as it's not rusted out I'll just treat and isolate the corrosion and pretend it's not there. Also had to put down a new ground wire for the rear subframe as the original one was BARELY there. Probably a bit controversial depending on who you ask about this... but I ended up just covering the crack in the side of the engine block, the one above the oil feed, with JB Weld. I used a generous amount and roughed up the whole area with a Dremel before, so I hope this will hold the coolant where it should be for the foreseeable future. Did a cam cover gasket job as the half moons were a bit leaky, and there too one could see the people who worked on this car before me were absolute tools. The same half moons were probably used like 3 times without even cleaning the old RTV off. Dremeled out the inside of the flange where the turbine housing mates onto the exhaust manifolds so the diameter matches, as the OEM exhaust manifolds are even narrower than the turbine housings as we all know. Even if this doesn't do much, I had them out anyways, so can't harm. Ideally one would port-match both the turbo and the manifold to the gasket size but I really didn't feel up to disassembling the turbine housings. Wrapped turbo outlet dumps in heat wrap band. Will do the frontpipe again as well as now the oil leak which promted me to tear apart half the engine in the first place is hopefully fixed. Fitted an ATI super damper to get rid of the worn old harmonic balancer. Surely one of the easiest and most worth to do mods. But torquing that ARP bolt to spec was a bitch without being able to lock the flywheel. Did some minor adjustments in the ECU tables to change some things I didn't like, like the launch control that was ALWAYS active. Treated rusty spots and surface corrosion on places I could get to and on many spots under the car, not pretty or ideal but good enough for now. Removed the N1 rear spats and the carbon surrounding for the tailpipe to put them back on with new adhesive as the old one was lifting in many spots, not pretty. Took out the passenger rear lamp housing... what do you know. Amateur work screwed me again here as they were glued in hard and removing it took a lot of force, so I broke one of the housing bolts off. And when removing the adhesive from the chassis the paint came right off too. Thankfully all the damaged area won't be visible later, but whoever did the very limited bodywork on this car needs to have their limbs chopped off piece by piece.   Quite a list if I do say so myself, but a lot of time was spent just discovering new shit that is wrong with the car and finding a solution or parts to fix it. My last problem that I now have the headache of dealing with is that the exhaust studs on the turbo outlets are M10x1.25 threaded, but the previous owner already put on regular M10 nuts so the threads are... weird. I only found this out the hard way. So now I will just try if I can in any way fit the front pipe regardless, if not I'll have to redo the studs with the turbos installed. Lesson learned for the future: Redo ALL studs you put your hands on, especially if they are old and the previous owners were inept maniacs. Thanks for reading if you did, will update when the engine runs again. Hope nothing breaks or leaks and I can do a test drive.
