Brand new gearbox stuffed, nissan says 'too bad'

Recommended Posts

As some of you know i blew my gearbox recently and decided to go for a new one Nissan...

My mechanic ordered one from his nissan parts contact at Ferntree Gully Nissan, got it the next day (they had 3 in stock!), he installed it, this was around the 1/10... put vmx80 in it, all good...

The day i got it back i noticed i had a whining noise coming from it, that went away when you pushed the clutch in...

Organised a time to show my mechanic to get him to listen, make sure it wasn't me going crazy, he confirmed it shouldn't be doing it and checked the basics like it had enough oil in it etc...

All fine he didnt know why it was doing it, suspected the input shaft bearing... said its wierd since its a brand new box (and it was it came in a box, and had no marks on it etc..)

So he called his contact at Nissan Ferntree Gully, expalained what was happening... he booked it in to get it checked out, strip down the gearbox fix it and put it back together, said it may take 3 days or so, booked it in for 26/10 (Tuesday just gone)... i dropped it off tuesday morning, showed the guys there the sound it makes, very easy to hear in neutral inside or outside the car, and its very whiny in 1st/2nd and 5th, 3rd and 4th its probably there but just harder to hear since there is more engine/exaust noise...

Left it with the guys at nissan, he said he didn't know how long it would take and he'd call me when he hears anything...

I let it go till this morning (thursday) when i still hadn't heard anything.. call up the guy (Barry) i dropped the car off to... he's not in, so left a message for him to call me back...

Wait 30mins, no call back, so i call back, get the same guy i spoke to he said he gave the message to Barry, but he will chace it up himself... and call me back in 10mins.. i wait 30mins no call, so i call back get ANOTHER person who tells me the car is ready to be picked up... So i called my mechanic and asked him to call there and check out what they did to fix it...

He does and calls me back, they haven't touched the FCKING CAR in 3 days.. they drove it on day 1, stalled it at every set of lights, and said it can't be a standard clutch, so that voids the warrenty, you fat fcks.... after i get off hte phone with my mechanic, i get a call from the guy who said he'd call back in 10mins (Rick) explaining the same thing to me and apologizing for no one calling me etc... i expalined it has made the noise since it went in brand new, so how could hte clutch have anything to do with it, if it had of been 6months down the track and i stripped 3rd then fair enough blame the clutch... but this box was delivered to me ****ed... he said he didn't know that and that he'll see what he can do with that.... but for now to come pick up the car if i want since they won't be able to do anyting for at least a week...

I go down there, speak to him he apologizes for the stuff up with nothing happening to the car in 3 days... and that he will do everything he can to get nissan to fix this etc.. but he can't promis anything... i explain how frustrated i am with the whole sitch.. and to look at it from my point of view, i bought a brand new gear box from nissan, that is delivered to me ****ed but i dont find out till i've paid my mechanic to install it... then i put my self out by leaving hte car at nissan for 3 days where it jsut sits there with no calls to me and when i chase it up i get told sorry warrenty is void because out shit**** mechanics keep stalling it...

he said he'll do what he can over the next week and has booked it in for in a couple of weeks, and hopefully nissan will come to the party and fix it...

how ****ed is that... how much ****ing around have i been through, and this was the exact thing i wanted to avoid by getting brand new.... so pissed off...

What do i do now?

Call consumer affairs?

Call Nissan headoffice feedback/customer service and explain it to them?

there's no way i'm letting them get away with this

the gearbox hasn't been paid for yet by my mechanic its on his account and he avoided paying it for this exact reason....

anyone know anyone in nissan?

Nissan dealerships are slow as poo! they won't do anything till you flush the toilet. I had a similar problem only it took them 3 months to get the part in!

I could have flown over to japan had a holiday and come back before they got the part in!

the way i got them to do it faster was by letting my mum talk to em! After she "spoke" to them they got the part for me in 3 days! Seriously. Even i'm scared of her. She has gotten me a discount on sooooo many things for my car it ain't funny.

Hi Andrew,

friggin gtr boxes! For what its worth a mate has an aussie delivered S15 that suffered box probs after 2 years (pretty common with the 6 speed in the S15). Car was still under warranty so went to Blackburn Nissan and they fitted a complete new box, get this, they suggested he supply a heavy duty after market clutch for them to fit while the box was out. Doesn't quite fit Ferntree gully's story that fitment of an aftermarket clutch will void warranty...

2nd story a mate has a 5speed getrag in a 5L commo that was purchased brand new. From day 1 the input shaft bearing has been noisy. Hes given it a hard time for 3 years and it hasn't failed but its bloody noisy. I've heard from several people that getting a quiet getrag is a bit of pot luck.

Don't frig around with Ferntree Gully, go straight to head office. Good luck mate.

man thats farked up!

give them their week and if still nothing has changed thats when u call consumer affairs... or just ring them up for advice and see what they say.

ben: yeah haven't paid, and if it was me directly with them i'd do exactly what you said, dump it on their doorstep and say 'fck you very much'

but unfortuantly its through my mechanic who i'm friends with and it would hurt his relationship with them, which i don't want to do... but he's sticking up for me and said he wont give them a cent till this is sorted and we're happy with it...

I'm thinking of calling Consumer affairs and just sussing out what rights i have...

And am definatly going to call Nissan head office feedback/customer service... see where i can get to from there... while they are doing what they can for the next week or whatever...

but if they want my car off the road again for more than a day, they can damn well give me a loan car, they had thier chance with this 3 days i gave them!

Very interesting to hear that blackburn nissan advised him to put a heavy duty clutch in at the time when they replaced the box... might have to use that one.

yeah, head office mate.

just go up and up and up and eventually you'll get to someone where the buck stops, the bullsh|t stops, and you get it fixed

No, you should always start at the TOP, and work your way down. Then the people that matter get to hear about it.

If you start at the bottom, everyone CsTA (Covers Their Arse) and the top people don't know that there's problems.

feel for you andrew.. that would really make me mad! I'd save myself the headache with stuffing around between consumer affairs and head office.. go straight to your solicitor and get hime to draft a hard core letter.. probably cost you $100. I'm sure your time stuffing around is worth more than, and they get the message you aint here for games.

Hrm... ive gone bottom up many times.

Centrelink & Toll-Ipec to name a few.

I ended up with State Managers and needless to say problems all of a sudden got sorted real damn fast

Yes, but how fast would it have been solved if you had started at State Manager (ie TOP)?

I had a problem once with an insurance company (sister to my own employer) that was hassling me over a claim by some jerk that reversed into me, and claimed I was at fault. I emailed the chief honcho in Sydney, explained my case, and he got things rolling to make sure that the case was closed.

andrew.....i just spoke to my guy at nissan....Nissan parts are under warranty australia wide....Meaning you dont have to go back to that dealer for a claim.........He said he will help you out......i am going to see him for some parts this afternoon and to discuss what he can do for you

I agree with the comments about the S14a gearboxes, tough as nails!!

Oh Ferni, if your mechanic hasnt paid for it yet, you have the upper hand, play nice for a week and see how far they are willing to co-operate, otherwise get your mechanic to take her out and drop it off to them full of grease and oil. haha

Troy: That would be appreciated mate, I'll drop you a PM with my contact details if you want to contact me directly or if you want to find out any more info or pass them onto your nissan contact... thanks again

    • What 1.5 way? There's no such thing really as a 1.5 way, just different ways of explaining 2 ways with different ramp rates. HOWEVER. In any driving in a straight line your 1.5 or 2 or 1.7 way should have no clunking at all. With the clutch fully depressed the diff should be silent (unless it's welded but I'm assuming it's not). Something aint right here.
    • Clutch is a spec brand, new clutch system,( PP, flywheel, friction disc, etc. pull type) installed 100 miles ago, with no problems.
    • looking for some help and maybe some insight on others experience with a new LSD. R34 GT ran and drove beautifully, but always alot of grip loss due to the open R200 rear end, so I just installed a new 1.5 LSD way into the stock open R200 for a ER34. Simple. Everything seemed right. I test drove for the first time this weekend. as I started to back out the garage the first time slowly with tires straight it sounded and felt like I had a loose or half disconnected drive shaft...that was clucking around loose and shaking entire vehicle, and making it feel like the trans clutch was spontaneously slipping then grabbing very roughly while just letting out pedal slowly. I backed it out went to pull forward with the same noise, shake and slip grab feeling with hesitation, I turned the tires to back out more and then pulled ahead some same thing but worst because of added wheel resistance (which that I expected) puzzled … pulling it back in checking everything over and finding nothing wrong, I tried it the next day. same thing, couldn’t believe how it shook everything again making a terrible noise and making it feel like the trans clutch was slipping and grabbing, but I got it out of garage into the driveway, got it straight, drove forward and then reveres a few times in a straight line everything shaking , causing what felt like clutch slip and grab every time, sounded like right behind front driver tire and I could feel it in the floor board with my feet,... worst right when beginning to let clutch pedal out to engage slightly, shuttering and sounding terrible along the way…I managed to slowly get down the road, babying it the whole way, once I was rolling (out of 1st) seemed to be better and between shifts, then clutch felt closer to normal…not slip/ grab etc., but back down to any stop, straight road or turning, same thing. Made no difference if all tires were straight or if I was turning. All other gauge read out correct. with in 2 miles as planned I reached the empty parking lot and performed the break in procedure that came with lsd, essentially to drive in a figure 8 a bunch.  Did this, binding chattering, and shaking the car the whole way. I drove it back home seemed somewhat normal once I was in straight line and past 10 mph or so, and I know it will “bind” on corners and cause some tires squeal when turning especially from a stop, but when I begin to move it still causes what feels like the trans clutch to slip and jerk badly as well as shaking the entire car, and sounds terrible, that I didn’t expect. I used the fluid they supplied with LSD kit and did the breaking, planning to change fluid as they suggest after breaking, but wondering will it get smoother or less aggressive with use? maybe a 1.5 is just too aggressive for normal road driving?   I have a LSD that I put in my 71 cuda when I restored it, with amazing smooth , quite yet effective results. Different style LSD but that ones a joy to drive. maybe expecting too much from this R200?
