the search function is your friend, i would suggest you do a search. theres been heeps of threads regarding all ur questions. also in the diy section theres stuff there about most models. oh and to pay under 15k for a 33, ud be hard bet to get a decent one.....an r32 maybe but id still be sus.

I'm not sure I understand what you guys mean by 'decent'? If you get the car inspected before you buy it, then isn't that enough to say it's 'as reliable' as another 33 with the same km's?

I don't own a 33, but people on here have said if you buy one around the 100Km mark, check if it's had the timing belt changed or not.

As for other cars, what about a 180sx? I'm sure there are turbo ones out there for <15K, they are lighter and have better fuel economy[4 cylinders]. They also have pop up headlights. Looks obviously is a matter of opinion. I know you said 33, but anyway this quote is from somone on the fff there was a thread comparing a r32gts-t vs a 180 without engines, just the car:

couple of reasons why I like the R32...

Diff - R32 has a Helical LSD diff compared to the 180's Viscous coupling LSD.

suspension - much better setup in the R32 compared to the 180

Interior - nothing spectactular but SHIT loads better than the 180's.. those seats are horrible..

the 180's hatch/rear window/door setup.. I really don't like it.. makes noise and isn't as structurally strong as the R32 setup of secure window and normal boot.

Looks - I PERSONALLY prefer the look of the skyline compared to the 180.. I'm not a fan of pop up lights. and I think the R32 has the best rear of any car out there.

R32 wheels - 5 stud - easier to find rims for.

R32 wheels - can fit really wide rims under the rear's of the R32 compared to the 180

Brakes - standard 4 piston brakes up front and 2 piston rears compared to the 180's pathetic excuse for brakes.

Both cars are useless for rear passengers.

I personally prefer the exhaust sound and smooth running of the RB over the SR but this is no reason to choose one over the other really..

With normal bolt ons like exhaust, intake, cooler, boost, computer, pump, suspension.. the 180 will come out on top with a little more power and torque and therefore will be faster around a track and in a straight line...

but if you were looking at some ridiculous power output (say closer to 300rwkw or more), I guess there are more options with the RB family that you can take from like the rb30 bottom end or straight over to the rb26...

The quote is from page 2, looks like somoene got banned/deleted as 'guest' started the thread!

Also, there was a thread on here recently about someone having a run with a gti-r.. although they are more towards the 18K mark. Once again have not owned any of these cars just talking from what I've read, but awd will win off the line, how long it stays in front depends on both cars and how many km/hr you get upto.

Would another cheap option to buy a datto or someting, put an sr20 into it and you have a quick car for <10K?? Or something like that, where the really old car you can buy for under 2K, engine conversion for 5K? and then 3K for brakes and rwc... look like a piece of shit but it'd be a 12sec car. <--- That's just a guess it's probably way off but you know, crazy things like turbo awd engines into old brumby, looks shit but cost is cheap and is fast.

Edit: http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/classifie...=1&cat=2&page=1

s13 ca18det, for 11,500... another cheaper[compared to r33] option to consider.

I wouldn't be looking at doing engine conversions into old cars.

Having done this myself when 18 the results were good ( rb20 into vh commodore) but a hellava lot of hard work for a result that just didn't compare to an import.(brakes, handeling etc.)

Next car I got was a ca18 s13 silvia - bought for 5500 uncomplied and once registered/complied 7500.

Silvia turbos are great bang for buck - if you look hard enough you should get a good one.

Now I own a r33 turbo - cost 17300 - immaculate when I bought it (still is) probably not as cost effective as a silvia/r32 for modification but much more refined.

So read-up, look hard and don't rush into anything.

As far as I'm concerned 11500 is absolute top dollar for any s13.

Good luck

yeah im not to rich and as im only about 18. 19 probably by the time i buy and dont wanna be paying an arm and a leg for insuarance plus shit load fuel

what is average fuel consumpsion per 100/km in a r33 gts-t????

from my experience of owning both:

R33 GTST 13-14L/100km

S13 (sr20) 10-12L/100km

this is normal driving, not thrashing it, both stock cars. and on long trips the consumption is lower again

On the above basis, dmx, do not purchase an 33 for 'your' price.

R33 is a most reliable 'sports' car, but not down at the price levels you are talking of.

Not being smart here my friend, but if you're worried about fuel consumption per 100k's, well then...just wait till you buy one.(R33)

In my experience (I imported my 33 for $20K all up), $18K (I'm in Melb) will buy you a clean example with 75 to 85K on the clock. (ofcourse, any car can be a lemon, but at least if the seller has the guts to poster an R33 at this price then there's a good chance of the car being better than cheaper unit).

Now then, let's talk about that insurance..........................

Buy yourself an SR20, fitted in any jap car, ($6-8500K), and still ace!!

ps...if u need the manual, I'll send u one....if u go R33!!

I've been getting around 11L/100km's in the RB20DET and appear to get slightly slighty better with the RB30DET.

The R33's are supposed to be a flat 10L/100km's by factory specs but they are often much more due to lack of maintance or due to mods which tend to make them run very very rich. The R32's don't tend to have the Rich ecu issues like the R33's do.

That S13.. Was that a DET?

R33 rich issues!!.........this is so true!! :goddam:

I found insurance with Shannons and Famous to be no different price wise to a standard run of the mill V8 Commodore or V8 Ford.

BUT... an XR8 or SS Commodore is more expensive for myself to insure than a R32 GTR. Thats for me on a rating one with a near perfect driving history..

hey hows it goin

i recently have purchased an r33 gtst 1993

14 k

hks 4 1/2 exhaust high flow cat

mags

bodykit

engine is stock as ( wont be for long)

timing belt changed at 60k

nice and tidy

104k on the clock

car was imported through in 2002

previous owner first owner in aus

had original log books from japan and in aus

serviced every 5k

this is my first turbo car i have owned and i luv it

smooth on the road, doesnt miss a beat

handles good

upgradin intercooler soon alongside 3 inch dump with sperated wastegate

boost controller and turbo timer

be goin down the quarter next week see my times for b4 and after

if anyones interested in times i do just pm me

its an auto

lot of people get desperate to sell a car.. because they lose their job, go into massive debt, through modifications they can't afford, they have to move out of home, or whatever else.. so they are the ones you can sometimes find at $15k, but that isn't really a realistic price going in hoping to find too many good examples for around that price, or get fussy about colours, rims, etc.

My R33 I sold for $20k clear and that had the bees-knees done to it in terms of most things you can think of except upgrading to the full "stage2" mod level (engine, turbo upgrades).. so you can probably find something for a bit less with a few less mods..

i will add my 5cents:

insurance for me was quote @ $4100 , age:17, R33 gts-t value $20,000 -full cover

3rd party + theif and fire @ $600 + $1000 excess

Both were from JUST-CARS and they were the only ones which would touch it, i rang around about 5+ compaies and got the same asnwer no imports or no drivers under the age of 21.

For Fuel, im running around 400km to a tank (exhuast, air filter, bov, boost around 0.5bar) i think this is pretty good as i give the car shit nearly everyday (for example i give the car alest 4+ flat out runs a day - running the car to limiter up till speed limit)

good r33 for 15k can happen, just take your time and dont rush in (ps dont buy the 1st skyline u see :D)

Insurance for a '33?

$145 for me - 3rd party. 25 year old fella, RACQ.

If I crash it I'll fix it.

Never could afford fully comp - you could do so much to you car for the amount they charge!!!

Hell - a body shell if a complete write-off isn't that expensive.....!

    • Back again. I returned to Japan in Jul/Aug to spend time with the car on my birthday and remind myself what all the sacrifice and compromise is for. It happened to line up with the monthly morning meet in Okutama, which I have been wanting to go to for a long time. It's a unique event at a unique spot with really rare, interesting, and quirky cars. It's where all the oldheads and OGs gather. The nighttime scene at DKF certainly has its place and should be experienced if you're into cars, but there's too much bad attention and negativity around it now. IMO the better time is Sunday morning at DKF or Okutama; it's more chill and relaxed. I'm glad I was finally able to go, but not sure it's worth the drive from all the way from Nagoya immediately the day before, unless I was already staying in Tokyo for the days right before the meet, because you have to wake up quite early to make it in time. Funnily enough though I didn't drive the car all that much this trip because it was just too damn hot. While there were zero issues and running temps were nominal and the A/C was strong, RBs already run crazy hot as it is. Sure, it took it all like a champ but something about driving these cars in the ridiculous heat/humidity bothers me and makes me feel like I'm asking too much of it. I'm just me being weird and treating the car like a living thing with feelings; I'm mechanically sympathetic to a fault. Instead I was mainly driving something else around - a KX4(silver) 2001 X-Trail GT, that I acquired in May. There's a few different flavors to choose from with Xs, but visually it's the Nissan version of the Honda CR-V. Mechanically it's a whole different story as this, being the top-trim GT, has an SR20VET mated to a four-speed auto and full-time AWD! It was a very affordable buy in exceptional condition inside and out, with very low mileage...only 48k kms. Most likely it was owned by an older person who kept it garaged and well-maintained, so I'm really happy with how it all worked out. It literally needs zero attention at the moment, albeit except for some minor visual touch-ups. I wanted something quirky, interesting, and practical and for sure it handily delivers on all three of those aspects. I was immediately able to utilize the cargo and passenger capacity to its full extent. It's a lot of fun to drive and is quite punchy through 1st and 2nd. It's very unassuming -in the twisty bits it's a lot more composed than one would think at a glance- and it'll be even better once I get better tires on it(yes, it's an SUV but still a little boat-y for my liking). So...now I have two golden-era Nissans in silver. One sports car and one that does everything else; the perfect two-car solution I think👍 The rest of the trip...I was able to turn my stressed brain off and enjoy it, although I didn't quite get to do as much as I thought. I did some interesting things, met some interesting people, and happened into some interesting situations however, that's all for another post though only if people really want to know. Project-wise, I went back to Mine's again to discuss more plans and am hoping to wrap that up real soon; keep watching this space if that interests you. Additionally, while working in the tormenting sweatbox that is the warehouse, I was able to organize most of the myriad of parts that my friend is storing for me along with the cars, and the 34 has a nice little spot carved out for it: And since it can get so stupid hot in there, that made it all the more easy -after I was standing there looking at the car and said 'f**k it'- to finally remove all the damn gauges that have mostly been an eyesore all this time. Huzzah. The heat basically makes the adhesive backing on the gauge mounts more pliable to work with, so it was far less stressful getting this done. I didn't fully clean it up or chase the wiring though; that will happen once I have the car in closer possession. Another major reason to remove all that stuff is to give people less reasons to get in my car and steal s**t while it's being exported/imported when/if the time comes, which leads us to my next point... ...and that is even though it's time in Japan is technically almost up since it's a November car and the X would be coming in March, I'm still not entirely sure where my life and career is headed; I don't really know what the future looks like and where I'm going to end up. I feel there's a great deal of uncertainty with me and as a result of that, it feels like I'm at a crossroads moreso now than any point in my life thus far and there are some choices I need to make. Yes, I've had some years to consider things and prepare myself, however too much has happened in that time to maintain confidence and everything feels so up in the air; tenuous one might say. Simply put, there's just too much nonsense going on right now from multiple vectors. Admittedly, I'm struggling to stay in the game and keep my eyes on the prize. So much so in fact, that very recently I came the closest I ever have before to calling it quits outright; selling everything and moving on and not looking back. The astute among you will pick up on key subtext within this paragraph. In the meantime I've still managed to slowly acquire some final bits for the car, but it feels nice knowing there's not much left to get and I'm almost across that finish line; I have almost everything I'll ever want for my interpretation and expression on what it is I think an R34 should be. 'til later.
    • Thanks for that, hadn’t used my brain enough to think about that.
    • Also playing with fire if they start to flow more air down low than what the stock twins can. It's not even up top you need to worry, it can be at 3000rpm and part throttle and it's getting way more flow than it should.
    • Any G40/1000 or G40/1250 results out there?
    • You still want a proper tune on the stock ECU though. Stock tune + stock ECU with GT-SS/-9s is probably playing with fire if you're running more than stock airflow/power.
