Automatic Transmission Shift Kit. - Updated Oct 2006

Quicker changes will reduce the wear of the auto cluches and reduce heat, so it will improve the life of the auto (not reduce it)

A trans cooler will cool down the oil (heat that comes from the torque converter) and will also help improve the life of the auto.

Thanks mate

I'm thinking of getting one, I noticed Stinks post about it being a bit harsh for what he wanted. Is the stage 2 that he has the same as what you guys have installed?

It may reduce the wear to the friction surfaces but the shock loads on the drivetrain are now a lot higher. From what i hear the diff and gearsets in the transmission are pretty strong but i'm sure it would reduce the life of these to some extent. Uni joints would be the things to keep an eye on. But in the end i guess this is no different to any other mod you do to your car, there is always a longevity penalty to be paid for performance.

mine was the stage 2 kit and i find it awesome..

it depends on what you want out of your gearbox..

want a stock car that survives forever? stick with stock...

want a performance car that you've modified? get a shift kit...

i didn't get it to make my passengers more comfortable or to increase the life of the trannie.. i got it to make my gear changes intstantaneous

anyone running around 400hp?

Mine runs around 250rwkw and was the first on the forums to be modified. (over 2 years now I think)

Still going strong, and an otherwise stock auto (no clutch packs etc yet, but I will put them in later when it gets tired)

My auto is still good with a tick over 200rwkw for the past 14months & that's with a sequential manual-auto.

Mike from MV has used one of the SA forum member's cars as a test bed for the RE4R01A & with supporting mods (ie. bigger ATF cooler, shift kit) the stock trans is good for up to 300rwkw (402rwhp).

anyone have and info on the electronic box i think i seen?
Are you referring to MV's magic black box? :) (Electronic shift controller)

If it is, it connects to & disables the auto ECU. It permanently makes it like a manual valve body - requiring full-manual shifts. Also, the line pressure needs to be increased for things to shift properly.

Group buy still on???

Anyone inquired about a stage 3? Of course tomorrow is good friday so i wont be able to call til prob tuesday ish

As was told to me when i asked the questions ages ago,

stage 1 is for towing caravans and the like

stage 2 is a performance valve body and recommended for the skyrine

As to putting one on yourself, very messy from what i have read but reasonably straight forward. mPull the pan off, drain fluid, pull old valve body off and replace with new shiny one, pan back on.

I am gonna give this a go

I want the valve body and the torque conv but i'm not in aus...did they ship this to oversea?

I believe they do.

I recall one skyline owner was in the UK.

He had a few problems but Mike was great and helped him through over the phone.

Im curious to what is the difference between stage 2 and stage 3?

Has anyone asked Mike yet?

And what are the price differences between the stages?

Been thinking of buying a shift kit for while. I have recently fitted a jacar boost controller (9psi low and 11psi high level) and being auto I am getting 2-3 psi boost spick beteen gears at times. I am thinking that with sharper change that will help eliminate/ keep spike down. Has anybody been down this track and what was the outcome?

I have never had a boost spike issue, perhaps its your boost controler or the length of the hose you use. Consider getting a decent one and see iof that fixes the problem.

    • A few suggestions: Do you have the option of retarding your exhaust cam gear to bring the power band over to the left? VCT would be turned off after you make peak torque, you see the power/torque will decay faster with it left on all the way to the limiter Once VCT is turned off, you'll find the motor will take a bit more timing being ramped in Send its mum, more boost! Of course, depends on your exhaust pressure.

    • I was back on the dyno again yesterday after completely revamping my methanol injection system. I was making 440kw at 19psi. Great, this is more then I was making last summer with my old meth system at that pressure, and I figured it would be smooth sailing up to 30+psi. We continued increasing from there and by 25psi, I had only hit 455kw. Dyno sadly lost utility power at this point and I left. We seemed to be on course to hit the same power wall as last summer (477kw@27psi). This is a built RB25 S1 stroked to a 2.8. Built and ported head with Kelford 272/262 cams. Precision 6466 Turbo. Tuner last year believed the power wall is a mix of RPM limitations (Hydro lifters/Limit set at 7600RPM) and fueling. With my new meth system, we're seeing zero knock now but it still won't go up.  What else can I do at this point? Here's my train of thought.  - It's clear from the dyno graph that I would easily make power to 8500+RPM but I'm limited to 7600RPM. I could risk increasing my limiter, but hydro lifters have me worried. What are my options here besides going NEO head or solid lifter conversion? I'm rocking a 1.05AR turbine on my 6466. Would dropping down to a .84 help shift that power down in anyway? - We're only seeing roughly a 30kw difference at the top end with VCT on or off. Is this normal? I want to confirm VCT is working properly. - Should I look into other cam options?  - Should I just keep increasing boost and see if she wakes up later on? I would expect to hit 600rwkw around 35psi with my 6466.
    • First thought is to use a ram mount (to hold the ipad) + windscreen suction mount. The arms on the ram mount can be as long as you like, should be able to position the ipad pretty well with that setup.
