Having had my Skyline for a while now, it has become very noticeable that there are very few people interested in driving their imports in any events (eg the speed event series). Other than the Eames R33, you rarely see another Skyline out and about. At the Wungong dam hill climb on Saturday there were only two GT-R's in a field of fifty to sixty cars.

Where is everybody? I thought the point of having a performance car was to get to drive it flat out.

Not everyone has a desire to go hurtling up hills and run the risk of burying it into the tree's, or in my case, armco..

There are people out there who do motorsport, but theres also stuff like drifting, the MC series, AEM classic challenge/rally and speed dome days, and the good ol drags..

Plenty of people out there doing it, its just not everyones cup of tea..

I won the Speed Event Series 2 years ago in a GTR and I will be back.

With the amount of motorsport avaliable at the present moment , there is not enough w/ends spare plus as mentioned, for the average Skyline owner it is a bit expensive.

When there was very little motorsport at the club level it was popular but now with MC, drifting etc as mentioned by Denver, people tend to be a bit fussier.

Cheers

:werd:

MC isnt expensive - we pay $70 entry fee plus plus one off $45 AASA lisence. MC isnt everyone's thing - but it still gives you a rush, requires skill and challenges you to beat your own times and other peoples.

The best thing about it - is you do it in your own "off the street" car - so no roll cages etc needed.

Mc CAN be expensive..

time you factor in, the $70 entry, $90 in a cams licence, anything from $30-180 for a club membership to a cams affiliated club, wack on a set of r-comps at around $1200 which will last 6 months to a yr, and start modding, it does become an expensive time..

Modded cars are hard enough to keep on the road, let alone flogging them on a track etc.

I used to do MC's all the time, then bought a skyline, spent $15000 on it, still doesn't drive properly.

most people use r-specs now (whats the advantage if everyones got them ??)

and you need another set of rims to put them on.

For me MC is about having fun. Take it too seriously and you are just kidding yourself. I enjoy putting my 33 around those courses for a laugh with my mates, and for the thrill of driving in a way I cant do safely on ordinary roads. I dont give a 2 shakes about winning (saddos in EVOs and other WRC wannabes can worry about that) - its all about having fun with my car - and my car is my hobby so I have a lot of fun. (And its best when gtrken shouts at you in training

There are so many motorsport options out there if you really want to do it, but dont wait for someone to hand it to you on a plate...go out there, find it, do it, and have a ball.

BTW djr81 your Datsuns Icon so rocks - best band evar :D

Thanks bloke - I was beginning to think no one had any taste in music.

As for motorsport being too hard on your car, I have to disagree. Set up properly & looked after (ie let the thing cool properly between runs) the only noteable consumables will be brake pads (front ones) & tyres. Think about the tyre wear from motorsport next time you see some one doing a burn out.

The reason I started this thread is simple - who wouldn't want to lap places such as Wanneroo in the Skyline? Most fun you can have with your trousers on.

mc right , 70$ for 4 runs of say 90 seconds each ? or about 12$ a minute !

Depends if you want competition or just laps. There are plenty of opportunities for test days to rack up as many km's as you desire. WASCC memberships are about $180, but much cheaper when you factor in free entry to the V8's & any other events on during the year. Test days are on all through the year.

CAMS licenses (level 2S) are < $100. Between these two it is all you need to get out and amongst it.

To use the twilight sprint round in early March at Wanneroo, you get twelve laps, plus a warmup and another run afterwards if you wanted it. Might not sound like much, but you will be fully occupied over the course of the event. Added to which you get full lap times, dinner & if you are good enough a trophy. People there are interested in what you are running, helpfull & friendly. Not everyone is hell bent on being the next Garth Tander. Chances of an off causing damage are almost nil. Beats hell out of sitting at home watching it on the tellie.

Anyway, enough of my ranting.

the cheapest and most fun form of motorsport ive found so far is going down to the collie motorplex and just doing laps.

50$ for the day with AFARCC (6 weeks time), no cams required, then just factor in tyre/brake wear i guess.

alot more fun than the drags or mc which ive been out of for about a year or two, I planned on entering SES this year but it didnt happen. NEXT YEAR!

Is that confirmed Shaun - AKAIK Collie is currently being resurfaced.

Also note: You don't have to enter every round of the SES!

yeah, it was mid march .. then mid april .. now its changed to may 15th because of the works.

hmmm, i got some castor rods coming in soon, once i get them installed and my suspension all sorted out i might start entering then.

i work from home now so the poor car just sits in the garage all day long :D

whats the SES website?

    • You just need to remove the compressor housing, not the entire turbo. I would not be drilling and tapping anything with the housing still on anyways.
    • So, I put my boat on a boat. First of all, I'm going to come out and say it. Why is Tasmania not considered a holy goal, an apex that all road-legal modified cars go to, to experience? This place is an absolute wonderland of titanic proportions. If people are already getting club runs for once in a lifetime 30 person cruises to Tassy then I've never seemed to see it. It is like someone replaced the entire place with an idyllic wonderland for cars, and all of the people living there with paid actors who are kind, humble, and friendly. Dear god. After doing a lap of almost all of the place I've found that it's a great way to find out all of the little things that the car isn't doing quite right and a great way to figure it all out. All in all, I drove for 4 hours a day for a week and nothing broke. I didn't even need to open the engine bay. This is by all means a great success, but it has left me with a list of things to potentially address. I also now have a 3D printed wheel fitment tool which annoyingly hasn't got any threads in it to actually assemble it. I might be able to tape it together to check the sizing I actually want to use, but it'll likely involving pulling the shocks out to properly measure travel at least at the front, and probably raise the car while I'm at it, at least in the rear. I scraped on quite a few things and I'm not sure how else to go about it. I was taking anything with a bump at what felt like 89 degree angles. And address those 10 other tasks. And wash the car. God damn it is dirty. And somehow, the weather was perfect the entire time - And because I was on the top of Mt Wellington it turns out it was very much about to freeze up there. I did something I typically never do and took some photos up there in what must have been -10 and the foggy felt like suspended ice, rather than mere fog. If you own a car in Australia, you owe it to yourself to do it.
    • Damn that was hilarious, and a bit embarrassing for skylines in general 😂 vintage car life ey. That R33 really stomped. Pretty entertaining stuff
    • Hi, I have a r32 gtr transmission. Does any of you guys have an idea how much power it will hold with the billet center plate and stock gearset? At what power level and use did yours brake with or without billet plate? Thanks, Oystein Lovik
    • Saw this replica police car based on a Mitsubishi Starion XX parked next to a 'police box' (it's literally a box) in Hirohata, Himeji City in Hyogo prefecture the other day. It's owned by Morii-san who is a local Mitsubishi Starion enthusiast. According to a local radio station blog post, he always wanted to make a police car himself based on ones he saw in his favourite Manga comics.  As it's illegal to modify a car to look like a police car and drive on the road, Morii-san tried many times to get permission from Aboshi police station headquarters nearby. They refused initially by after they got tired of that they granted him permission. However, the car can only be displayed on private property and obviously can't be registered as long as the police livery is present. The car was completed at a cost of 1.5 million yen (US$ 10,000) in addition to the car cost. A location was chosen outside Hirohata Police box where the car can easily been seen from the street. Morii-san has two other Starion road cars, both widebody GSR-VRs.
