Just wondering if the VL water pump fits a series one R33 RB25DET...

some threads say it does others don't.

Anybody know prices for an RB25DET suitable pump.  Anybody know a good aftermarket product and price?  What is Nissan worth...?

I believe they look the same, but one of the holes isnt in the correct place.

Dont try and scrimp money here, get the timing belt, pullies and pump replaced at the same time by a workshop with experience. Check the forums and you will find horror stories of where this simple repair has destroyed engines.

I am of the understanding that all RB engine water pumps are the same except GT-R N1 water pumps.....

Either way I have an RB30 one on my RB25DET Neo, it's amazing the price differences you get when you walk into one shop and ask for an R33/R34 Skyline water pump, and then walk into another and ask for a water pump to fit a VL Commodore/R31 Skyline :cheers:

I doubt that if you've got a turbo series 1 rb25 the rb30 pump will fit.

I tried this on mine but I found like 4 door sleeper said one hole is different.

I'd go genuine if I were you.

You can save money on the idler + tensioner pulleys though - I went to a local bearing shop that deals with NSK bearings with the part numbers and got the right ones much cheaper than nissan.

Part numbers

Tensioner: NSK 60TB0683 EA7L 806

Idler: NSK 56TB2801B01 ENSL 309

All RB series pumps are exactly the same. Even the r32 N1 is the same the only difference comes in r33 N1 and r34..... Someone mentioned about the fact the rb25-26 revs higher that isnt a problem as the speed of the water pump is dictated by the size of the pulley and you will notice that the rb30 front pulley is way smaller... I have always used rb30 without a problem...

No they're not - and I'm speaking from experience. For example R33 GTR pump does not fit R32 GTR without modification (more or less substantial depending on your welding/machine shop abilities). Also RB30E WP has less vanes on the impellor than RB26 type, which means it shifts less water per impellor revolution. I suspect the greater number of vanes on the RB26 WP is due to the increased demands of the water cooled turbos.

That said, I suspect an RB30 pump would bolt straight to an RB25 and if people that have done it are reporting no problems then that's a good sign.

The pump fitted BUT as everyone else here has confirmed there is one bolt hole thats different. I didn't put it on because of this. I'd hate it to start leaking.

Something else of interest - the rb30 one fits on a rb20 (did it on dad's) - just am unsure of how it would handle the revs - doesn't matter with dad as he rarely revs it over 4 grand.

Interesting....in that case I'd also recommend not using the RB30 pump. The bolt is there for a reason and leaving it out increases the risk of a leak.

I think the pump ending in U26 was the correct one for Series 1. The VL pump didnt suit. My pump was in fine condition so Didnt bother replacing. I think the U26 pump was about $125 trade from nissan. I replacesd belt myself so if the pump does go before next belt change not a huge deal. The one in it now could last longer than a new one you fit, thats if you get a dud..

Dunno about the rb25 but an rb30 pump fits and works fine on a 32 rb26 we run one on the race car :rofl:

The important thing to note here is 'race car'. The RB30 pump has less vanes in the same way as the N1 pump so would probably better (at least in that way) on a race car where sustained high rpm would be the norm as opposed to a road car. OTOH, the RB30 pump does not have the anti-cavitation plate which is there for a reason on the N1 pump.

In the same way, the RB30 pump has less vanes than the stock RB26 pump and there's no doubt Nissan have done that for a reason - probably differing flow issues - and personally I'd rather stick to the correct type that being the case. That said, if people are not having problems with the RB30 pump that's good, and at the end of the day it's a personal choice.

    • It would be well worth deciding where you want to go and what you care about. Reliability of everything in a 34 drops MASSIVELY above the 300kw mark. Keeping everything going great at beyond that value will cost ten times the $. Clutches become shit, gearboxes (and engines/bottom ends) become consumable, traction becomes crap. The good news is looking legalish/actually being legal is slighly under the 300kw mark. I would make the assumption you want to ditch the stock plenum too and want to go a front facing unit of some description due to the cross flow. Do the bends on a return flow hurt? Not really. A couple of bends do make a difference but not nearly as much in a forced induction situation. Add 1psi of boost to overcome it. Nobody has ever gone and done a track session monitoring IAT then done a different session on a different intercooler and monitored IAT to see the difference here. All of the benefits here are likely in the "My engine is a forged consumable that I drive once a year because it needs a rebuild every year which takes 9 months of the year to complete" territory. It would be well worth deciding where you want to go and what you care about with this car.
    • By "reverse flow", do you mean "return flow"? Being the IC having a return pipe back behind the bumper reo, or similar? If so... I am currently making ~250 rwkW on a Neo at ~17-18 psi. With a return flow. There's nothing to indicate that it is costing me a lot of power at this level, and I would be surprised if I could not push it harder. True, I have not measured pressure drop across it or IAT changes, but the car does not seem upset about it in any way. I won't be bothering to look into it unless it starts giving trouble or doesn't respond to boost increases when I next put it on the dyno. FWIW, it was tuned with the boost controller off, so achieving ~15-16 psi on the wastegate spring alone, and it is noticeably quicker with the boost controller on and yielding a couple of extra pounds. Hence why I think it is doing OK. So, no, I would not arbitrarily say that return flows are restrictive. Yes, they are certainly restrictive if you're aiming for higher power levels. But I also think that the happy place for a street car is <300 rwkW anyway, so I'm not going to be aiming for power levels that would require me to change the inlet pipework. My car looks very stock, even though everything is different. The turbo and inlet pipes all look stock and run in the stock locations, The airbox looks stock (apart from the inlet being opened up). The turbo looks stock, because it's in the stock location, is the stock housings and can't really be seen anyway. It makes enough power to be good to drive, but won't raise eyebrows if I ever f**k up enough for the cops to lift the bonnet.
    • There is a guy who said he can weld me piping without having to cut chassis, maybe I do that ? Or do I just go reverse flow but isn’t reverse flow very limited once again?
