I'm not familiar with Boomerangs but I know Vipers aren't that fantastic when it comes to proper security... none except the 700ESP (International model, but even then isn't Aus complied due to lack of Passive arming, with the Vipers you can turn it off which isn't compliance friendly) have black wiring and I think at the same time it's the only one with 3 point immobilisor? I've had a DEI Electronics alarm before (Same company) and had no problems but as GotBoost said, most insurance companies won't touch them for proper coverage. Alot of Viper is brand name... and I find alot of the features are sort of useless but are cool to impress your mates, ie. pager alarms with remote start (A friend had one and kept running out to check on it cause of false alarms then eventually got fed up :(). But if you want proper security I'd look elsewhere or get the 700ESP if you have to go Viper. Alot of their alarms are only single point immobilisation and while autobarn and other places say they can create relays to create extra points... it's useless as if one point is defeated, so are the rest. And I don't think insurance companies would be impressed with that... or yourself when you find your pride and joy missing :(

If they want to steal your car, they will... more immobilisor points (proper... not relays) will deter them, black wiring even more... but even so with all this, a good install is easily better then a good alarm. If your install is easily noticeable (ie. under the dash), it's pretty much useless, more so if the alarm wiring is made noticeable and doesn't "camoflague" in with the stock wiring loom.

Most good installs will locate the main unit way into in the dash, above air vents, definately places you can't get to quickly without hacking the whole dash to bits or dissassembling it. A really good install will take out the whole dash and integrate the alarm into the loom to make everything look factory and wire a point up to the ECU then the usual ignition, starter motor and/or fuel pump... the car then won't be going anywhere unless it's on the back of a tow truck :(

Look into a Mongoose or Cyclops alarm too... doesn't have to be American or famous to be good :( Hope I helped... good luck.

Care to elaborate on that more? I've never heard that before..

I think he meant it's not insurance approved (no aussie standards compliance).

I recently purchased an alarm from Chris Rogers (audio express).

I found his service and price to be excellent and I got an alarm that did everything I wanted mine to do.

I'd was wary of the viper for some reason (gut feel) and yeah I think it's a fast and the furious alarm :( If you do have to have it remember it sells on websites in USA for about $200-250 USD. Even with exchange rate and shipping I think it may be worth buying from there.

There not Aus approved therefore insurance company will not cover your alarm as part of the policy. If they find out its a non approved alarm (like i know one person did) then kiss getting insurance anywhere else goodbye as well.

Viper to me is purely wank value and not really a great alarm unless your willing to spend $800 -$900 and upwards. Dont get me wrong protection is important for ya ride and worth every penny, but there are pleny of alrams out there (australian made/legal) that will do the exact same job and for half the price.

Look at Cyclops, Vision and some of the others that you can buy locally. Talk to people in the business (CHris Rogers aka Audio Express) as they are always willing to help you out and steer you in the right direction. I didn't even buy my alarm from Chris and he gave me a phone call and helped me out and we live at the other ends of Austalia. To me that is a guy that cares about his job, know's his stuff and is willing to give up his time and knowledge to help out fellow car enthusiasts, we need more of these people and there are plenty of them on SAU. Look around and you will realise you can get a better alarm and save yourself a few dollars along the way. Think of it this way, the money you save on the alram itself, you can put towards a professional install. My 2cents anyway

:(

I just put some system in... The Keyring has "Majicar" on it.

I don't reccomend this system... Its fcuking shit... The remote start can be handy, but not when the fcuking thing tries to start the car a few more times AFTER the car has already started.

Autobard has fitted it, and its dodgey as... I'm not happy with the service, and the workmanship, and I don't know what to do about it. Its fcuking crap.

What do any of you guys suggest I do? $350 to install, and $450 for the system.

The only thing good about it is the Window Winders.

called them and showed them I wasn't happy, and they are gonig to pull it out and install another.

Still... Its an invonvenience.

That seems a bit rough but if there is problems with the unit then its better to get another one installed and start over. But if you talk to a couple of pro installer like Chris ROgers im pretty sure they will tell you that $350 is fairly pricey, even for the best guys. The guy i was talking to originally to do mine was going to cost me $200 tops. Thats was to install the alarm/immobiler and central locking and boot release kit in my R32.

i know a dude who works at JB-Hifi, he does the audio/alarm install for them n used to do so for strafield n crap, he redid my dads merc n mums bmw with good shit n decent price, not the over charged crap like autobarn n them, he also recomends boomerang over viper, as viper is "ricey 2f2f nonesense"

CC,

ta glad you are happy

GMB,

ta. glad I was of help.

in regards to to the original systems in question i have done both. both are illegal to use in aust. ( the remote start is the problem) both use coloured wires again a no no on the isurance front. viper has no passive immobilisation ( it's disabled from factory.) and from memory the boomerang doesn't either.

the viper has a relay satellite that needs to be VERY well hidden for obvious reasons and doing extra points on it requires a LOT of relays and these need to be WELL hidden as does the control wire feeding them. ( clip it and the whole lot is gone!)

the boomerang one needs to have the module & wiring WELL hidden as the heavy cabling that feeds it makes the car VERY easy to move.

mongoose, cyclops, brant are more my pick. brant nemisis works well but if you forget that you have the car jacking enabled it will give you the sh1ts. the keypad will stop 99% of joyriders ( not me though!) from taking the car. brant seem to be doing more OEM stuff lately for some reason and getting out of the aftermarket side of things. I have a nemisis system sitting here currently but it takes a pro to do it properly.

mongoose do one that keeps the insurance companies happy and for a fee I can add a tilt (or tow sensor as its known) to the alarm. look at the M80G.

Cyclops do a neat one ( P785) that doesn't need arming/disarming as it does it by transponder. walk up to the vehicle get in and go. walk off and it does its thing. only draw back is the two pt kill. ( mongoose has 3 brant nemsis had 6.)

i do this for a living so if you have questions please ask or email me.

    • Hey Dave, welcome aboard! Good to see another soon-to-be Stagea owner here. The wagons are awesome — plenty of space, still got that Skyline DNA, and loads of potential if you’re into mods. Definitely post up pics when you get it, everyone here loves seeing new builds. What model/year are you looking at?
    • See if you can thermal epoxy a heatsink or two onto it?
    • The other problem was one of those "oh shit we are going to die moments". Basically the high spec Q50s have a full electric steering rack, and the povo ones had a regular hydraulic rack with an electric pump.  So couple of laps into session 5 as I came into turn 2 (big run off now, happily), the dash turned into a christmas tree and the steering became super heavy and I went well off. I assumed it was a tyre failure so limped to the pits, but everything was OK. But....the master warning light was still on so I checked the DTCs and saw – C13E6 “Heat Protection”. Yes, that bloody steering rack computer sitting where the oil cooler should be has its own sensors and error logic, and decided I was using the steering wheel too much. I really appreciated the helpful information in the manual (my bold) POSSIBLE CAUSE • Continuing the overloading steering (Sports driving in the circuit etc,) “DATA MONITOR” >> “C/M TEMPERATURE”. The rise of steering force motor internal temperature caused the protection function to operate. This is not a system malfunction. INSPECTION END So, basically the electric motor in the steering rack got to 150c, and it decided to shut down without warning for my safety. Didn't feel safe. Short term I'll see if I can duct some air to that motor (the engine bay is sealed pretty tight). Long term, depending on how often this happens, I'll look into swapping the povo spec electric/hydraulic rack in. While the rack should be fine the power supply to the pump will be a pain and might be best to deal with it when I add a PDM.
    • And finally, 2 problems I really need to sort.  Firstly as Matt said the auto trans is not happy as it gets hot - I couldn't log the temps but the gauge showed 90o. On the first day I took it out back in Feb, because the coolant was getting hot I never got to any auto trans issues; but on this day by late session 3 and then really clearly in 4 and 5 as it got hotter it just would not shift up. You can hear the issue really clearly at 12:55 and 16:20 on the vid. So the good news is, literally this week Ecutek finally released tuning for the jatco 7 speed. I'll have a chat to Racebox and see what they can do electrically to keep it cooler and to get the gears, if anything. That will likely take some R&D and can only really happen on track as it never gets even warm with road use. I've also picked up some eye wateringly expensive Redline D6 ATF to try, it had the highest viscosity I could find at 100o so we will see if that helps (just waiting for some oil pan gaskets so I can change it properly). If neither of those work I need to remove the coolant/trans interwarmer and the radiator cooler and go to an external cooler....somewhere.....(goodbye washer reservoir?), and if that fails give up on this mad idea and wait for Nissan to release the manual 400R
    • So, what else.... Power. I don't know what it is making because I haven't done a post tune dyno run yet; I will when I get a chance. It was 240rwkw dead stock. Conclusion from the day....it does not need a single kw more until I sort some other stuff. It comes on so hard that I could hear the twin N1 turbos on the R32 crying, and I just can't use what it has around a tight track with the current setup. Brakes. They are perfect. Hit them hard all day and they never felt like having an issue; you can see in the video we were making ground on much lighter cars on better tyres under brakes. They are standard (red sport) calipers, standard size discs in DBA5000 2 piece, Winmax pads and Motul RBF600 fluid, all from Matty at Racebrakes Sydney. Keeping in mind the car is more powerful than my R32 and weighs 1780, he clearly knows his shit. Suspension. This is one of the first areas I need to change. It has electronically controlled dampers from factory, but everything is just way too soft for track work even on the hardest setting (it is nice when hustling on country roads though). In particular it rolls into oversteer mid corner and pitches too much under hard braking so it becomes unstable eg in the turn 1 kink I need to brake early, turn through the kink then brake again so I don't pirouette like an AE86. I need to get some decent shocks with matched springs and sway bars ASAP, even if it is just a v1 setup until I work out a proper race/rally setup later. Tyres. I am running Yoko A052 in 235/45/18 all round, because that was what I could get in approximately the right height on wheels I had in the shed (Rays/Nismo 18x8 off the old Leaf actually!). As track tyres they are pretty poor; I note GTSBoy recently posted a porker comparo video including them where they were about the same as AD09.....that is nothing like a top line track tyre. I'll start getting that sorted but realistically I should get proper sized wheels first (likely 9.5 +38 front and 11 +55 at the rear, so a custom order, and I can't rotate them like the R32), then work out what the best tyre option is. BTW on that, Targa Tas had gone to road tyres instead of semi slicks now so that is a whole other world of choices to sort. Diff. This is the other thing that urgently needs to be addressed. It left massive 1s out of the fish hook all day, even when I was trying not too (you can also hear it reving on the video, and see the RPM rising too fast compared to speed in the data). It has an open diff that Infiniti optimistically called a B-LSD for "Brake Limited Slip Diff". It does good straight line standing start 11s but it is woeful on the track. Nismo seem to make a 2 way for it.
