Ok, stupid question time

My R32 GT-R's stock front pipes have seen better days: rusted and leaking. So its time for a replacement.

I have been tossing up between just sticking another stockie on, or going for an aftermarket. Ultimately I want to get the Trust split front/dump setup, but can't afford it at the moment. The car is also running the stock dump pipes.

On to the stupid questions.... What are the diameter measurements for the stock front pipe? If I get an aftermarket pipe with say 2 x 70 --> 80, is that going to be able to be mated to the stock dumps (ie. does the flange stay the same, even if the pipe size increases)?

Finally, has anyone had any experience with the Blitz GT-R front pipe?

Cheers,

Lucien.

my advice. with GTR front pipes. they are such a simple piece of kit a blitz one will be very similar to an HKS one, which looks exactly like a 5-zigen one which looks like a Liverpool exhausts one. etc etc. the only difference will be: mild or stainless, pipe diameter and some may incorporate a felx joint. no matter what they will bolt up to the stock dumps and whatever cat you have on there. the pipe size inceases but the flange stays the same.

I reckon just save your pennies for the trust dumps/fronts. from what i've seen they look to be the ducks nuts.

Richard,

Arr.. if the flanges stay the same, that's good news.

I agree in regards to the front pipes: they are all very similar. I could get used stockies for $50-100, a used mild steel aftermarket for like $150-250, or a used stainless for $250-350. For about a good priceI can get a new Blitz tuned length in stainless steel (plus I think it has the gaskets), hence the temptation.

/me looks at Nick's nick and shakes his head

What are the Apexi's worth roughly?

most dump/front combos are quite heavy though by the time you add up two dumps and the front pipes. how much heavier do you reckon they are over stock? also how much heavier over say a set of HKS dumps and some A/M front pipes.

I'm running Trust dumps.  The trust ones are quite heavy though... just thought i'd add that

You mean dumps or front pipe? Or both (ie. the Greddy Ext. Front/Dump set)? Trust also has (or had) their own front pipe (called the MX) hence the confusion

I'm only looking at the front at the moment as I don't have time (or money) to pull the whole exhaust side apart again to replace the dumps.

Roni has the newer trust dump/front combo. yeah the trust MX pipes are not too expensive either from memory.

In which case I would be interested in the weight comparison too. Perhaps its just because the front pipe section is considerably bigger on the Greddy units?

Now that I think about it, the Trust dump / front extension pipes I have may be only a little heavier.

Consider that the original cast dumps are quite heavy, then the front pipes are relatively lighter

The Trust extension I have is all stainless of the same thickness - so must be as thick as required at the dump end all the way along - whereas I would imagine that the MX front pipes would be thinner as it is further from the exhaust housing and thus subjected to (slightly) lesser heat.

Did that make any sense?

The ID of the 2 primary pipes is around 47mm and the ID of the collector is 67mm

Both sets of flanges have a PCD of 105mm,I just measured these with a tape so they may not be exact.

You''ll find most 2 bolt gaskets will have the same PCD, when I fitted a bigger set of front pipes the local exhaust shop had all the gaskets in stock. So the size is quite common.

My new pipes are 60mm front 75mm collector and to be honest I didnt notice much difference in performance.I'd wait and get the Trust ones they look great!

just: very useful info, ta.

As I said, I just don't have the time for the Trust/Greddy units: having to pull everything out to replace the dumps is a massive hassle (I only just a fortnight went through the whole turbo/manifold removal too thanks to a leaking gasket).

If the leak wasn't bad I would consider just ignoring it, but the leak/s are very noticable.

SPHYNX[x']just a question. Is there such a thing as titanium dumps/fronts? Or would they just not work due to the heat stress or something?

They certainly exist: ARC makes a titanium front pipe, and these ones are constantly for sale on Yahoo JP. Only problem is none of the titanium ones seem to be the split design.

I haven't come across titanium dumps, however.

Edit: I would imagine that titanium dumps would cost a fortune given the thickness of metal required.

How hard is it to change the Dumps (from Underneath) when the front pipes have been removed...?

As my GTR only has a Cat back Exhaust and I'd like to do both at same time if possible...

And whats the general consensus on getting an exhaust shop to make up some bigger front pipes for the R32 GTR...?

All these 'Bolt On' parts are new to me  yet I've had no problems in the past with Local Exhaust shops exhaust systems..!.?

    • There's restrictor pills in the stock boost control hoses. That's how they set the amount that was bled off and hence the "high" boost setting. The usual mod in the day was to remove it and send the "high" boost setting up to about 14 psi.
    • Thanks Duncan, that's the best info I've read. Furthermore after learning about the PCM programming side controlling the factory boost solenoid, the purpose of the solenoid is to "bleed" boost when pin 25 is earthed, thus allowing spring pressure in the wastegate actuator to overcome diaphragm boost pressure, thus closing or reducing the position of the wastegate flap creating more boost as the turbo is able to spin faster. It's pretty cool to see a designated Pill to do exactly this, would have liked to have seen it with a tiny filter over the end for those moments in vacuum.  The constant bleed pill has now been removed completely from the system and solenoid boost control has been restored once again.   Case closed 😂
    • The wideband reading is meaningless if it's not running. Why are you using shitty old sidefeeds on any engine, let alone a Neo? What manifold and fuel rail are you using to achieve that? Beyond that, can't help you with AEM stuff as I've never been their ECU/CAS combo.
    • Manual boost controllers (where a little of the boost was bled off) were quite common back in the day, because they were cheap and easy. Generally they had a manual adjustment screw rather than being fixed like yours. Down side is they always bleed boost, not just when you want them to so an electronic boost controller that uses a solenoid will have less lag.
    • Hello , im new here and i have A31 home build  RB25det neo stock eng / turbo  aem ems 2 blue connector  aem 3.5 map aem cas disk aem wideband connected to ecu  355 lph pump 550 nismo yellow injectors side feed aftermarket regulator  and won’t start with base aem tuner basic tune eventually flipped cas 180 degree so it triggers on correct stroke not in exhaust cycle  Now it won’t start Wideband reads 10 and 11 at lowest fuel setting  and will share calibrations soon for aem tuner i think something is wrong in aem tuner    please if you have any information, am very grateful
