hey guys

mate of mine said i can have his old intercooling - for if/when i turbo my NA - it's a hybrid copy usual one seen on here - he upgraded to some crazy trust kit :)

he reckons i could put it on the car now, run one pipe to throttle body and on the other end have it finish in the engine bay with a POD on it - i reckon this wouldn't work as air flow may be cooler but surely the motor wont be able to suck enough air through that distance?

thoughts?

You wouldnt need one as all the cooler does on a turbo car is cool down the hot air from the turbo to intake. I cant imagine the air being drawn in not forced would be anywhere near the temps of a turbo car. But I guess the one way to be sure is to try it out and let everyone know!

not just for looks just because if i don't grab it now he's selling to another guy - and i don't see the point of having it collect dust in the shed :P

but i guess with my new bomex front a FMIC would look nice in that big bare space :)

surely it would drop the temp a bit though...

Funny shit, please tell me your not seriously thinking of putting an intercooler on a NA skyline!

If yes, and you know a little bit about cars - please register one vote here for rice thread of the month.

If yes, and you don't know much about cars - trust me, don't buy it and definatly don't put it on your car. If you really have to buy it, just put it under your bed and wait till you bolt a hairdryer to your engine.

Try not to thing I'm having a go - just get some more experience with cars.

BTW: yes, your could get your NA car to run with an intercooler but I would put money on a loss in performance - intercoolers are big restrictions - the last thing you need on a NA engine, it would be purely rice value.

Intercoolers are not as big a restriction as everyone seems to think. Stick something like a hairdrier at one end, (which will burn out with airflow restriction), and you find that it'll happily run, without dying. Have I don't this yes. Why, to dry out a cooler that we dipped.

A N/A engine, will in no way, become "laggy". Commonly associated with turbo cars.... It's not going to be nothing, then, BAM! Power.

The air going into it is the same temp as the air hitting the cooler......

Actually not, the intake air is under the hood (if you're using a pod filter) so it's going to be warmer than the air hitting the cooler, but in all honesty there is no point putting a cooler on an NA car, just make a cold air box and put an feed into it coming from somewhere cool like the air dams in the front bar. My mate has done this and it's gained a KW or 2.

They are a bloody big restriction when you are pumping a whole lot of air through them:

2.5l engine at 4000rpm = 10000l air min = 166L/sec, Unless you have a hairdryer (talking real hairdryer, not a turbo) that flows 166L/sec then your not going to even be able to imagine what sort of restriction an intercooler can be.

i think timbar32 is on the money here...

the way i understand it is that when the turbo compresses the air, it also generates a rediculous amout of heat. an intercooler is placed in line with the turbo outlet and the intake manifold. hot (and compressed) air from the turbo outlet runs through the intercooler, which is made of metal (good conductor of heat). it conducts the heat so that the metal fins are approx the same temp as the air. ambient air then flows over the metal fins at which point heat follows the change in temp gradient and attempts to reach an equilibrium. essentially the ram air 'draws' the heat out of the metal fins and thus the air inside. on an intercooled turbo car, at best an intercooler will reduce the intake temps to ambient

now, an NA setup has no such heat-generating device in its intake path (ie turbo). so assuming there's the factory airbox and not a rediculus pod, essentially the intake temp of the air being drawn is IS ALREADY AMBIENT TEMPERATURE. thus an intercooler won't reduce the temperature of the intake air because there's no heat difference. all it will do is pose a restriction (which may be insignificant if its a low-powered car)

BUT... for wank factor... an intercooler in conjunction with an electronic BOV set-up and some fake plumbing will make for some entertaining rice.

and if you can convince your mates (and us) that its had a turbo conversion then you should be a politician!

if you want setup the core in place and leave the piping off this way your core wont be gathering dust in the shed

as for putting a huffer on your hauler ... y not sell it and buy one already turbo'd much much more simple

    • I should. But it already uses too much fuel for a daily. You might note my recco for engine chnages are almost exclusively to people who have it as a weekender/summer car. I don't even have room to keep the spares for this one, let alone another car.
    • If I had "perfect R33 GTR" kinda money I would have bought one of the crazy expensive low mileage HJA cars, but I am sadly not that wealthy. I already picked this car out of various Skylines for sale locally, most of which were worse in some way. Only a few cars were actually better but also more expensive. In terms of buying a motor locally, I at least have the option to inspect it myself and juding the seller as a person, and used or freshly rebuilt engines that some people sell are actually ok price-wise. I knew the car was going to require work, but shit piled up real fast and I haven't even driven 1000km yet as the turbo started oiling like a bitch within a few weeks after I got the car.   I assume it wasn't actually me who cracked it, though there is no way to know when that crack formed and if the previous owner even knew it was there. Buying another 05U Block can be a gamble, yeah, but the cheapest PRP cast block is like twice or more money-wise, and billet is 3 or 3 times as much. For now I am most likely just keeping the current engine, as a rebuild or engine swap isn't happening right now. But I am seriously considering buying a second engine and selling mine in return. Might be a sweet deal at the end.
    • Hi all. I need some help buying the correct size banjo bolts for my 2860 turbos. Because whoever installed them tore up the original part, I ordered new ones of this kind, because I just figured these were the most leak-resistant option as I already had trouble with a shitty braided line. I need to know the thread size of the smaller left hole, that is the turbo oil feed connection. I found out so far that the turbo oil inlet apparently has a 7/16"-24 thread, but I cannot find any listing or description of the thread size on this line. I do not have the original bolts. I tried using the bolts that were in the turbos (the ones that were mounted with the shitty braided line) but they sit very loosely so they can't be the right thread. Means either these bolts are the wrong ones (how do they fit the turbo then? no clue) or the wraparound-lines have a different thread than the turbo oil feed itself. Help is appreciated, asking Nissan directly is obviously not going to work.
    • EDIT: PSA to whoever stumbles upon this thread. It is in fact a crack in the block that caused this concern. Just letting you know. In my case, a few cm long hairline crack going horizontally above the turbo oil feed. Classic RB shit I guess
