All you guys bagging out Mario consider this. When/if you build a house in the future, will you claim that as your own? The fact remains that YOU will not personally build it. You will have input in it, and build it to your specifications. You will also have expert knowledge as input. Isn't this the same as Mario? I don't see any difference and therefore I think its a little distateful in bagging him.

Its an awesome effort and good on him. Keep up the good work!!!

Well if I buy a house and I live in it, it is my house. But that's different, I don't know mario, could be a prick, could be the nicest guy in the world, but how many GTR's outside of japan run 8's ? To ALL involved with the project, keep up the good work, we all love skylines, and faster ones even more.

Ha Ha & He He as well....I have learned my lesson. :uh-huh:

I don't care if M**io considers this comment to be sincere but I would like to offer my congrats to the all the guys who put in the hard work to get the car on the track again. This is a great start to what we all hope will be a positive trend in Australian drag racing.

I look forward to seeing faster times as I am sure that with its new airshift box it will be capable of 7's not to mention that next time out the driver will have already driven it.

MAJOR RESPECT to Mario

And, of course, the team behind him. CRD, C&V, everyone deserves congratulations... Even he has a list of Thank-You's on his website, so it's not as if he claims to do it all by himself.

He may seem to be a chequebook racer to some, but I visit his website fairly regulalry and it appears to me that he knows his s#!t. I'm not going to pretend that I'm THE most knowledgable person, but I do a fair bit of reading and the occasional work under a car (as I'm sure a lot of you do, too), so I get by in my own way and can respect that his research and knowledge far outweighs what I know...

He's obviously done a lot of research to come up with the goods to make his car run this time, and so how much he earns and spends on his car(s) etc has nothing to do with the rest of us. The fact that he's a Skyline enthusiast and amongst the first owners of a Skyline that runs in the single digits should be enough...

I was thinking earlier, how in the past i've commented on Mario's project and stuff, and how others here also comment on it in a bad way. Why do we only give Mario & the GTR700 development crew shit, and not HKS, Signal, and so on? The HKS cars, Signal cars etc. were all built in a similar fashion to GTR700 - Not by one person. We also never commented on the first times those cars ran when they were only running 10s etc did we? I think that GTR700 has alot more potential, and considering the little amount of time it's had on the track the times it's ran are pretty impressive. Look at how many runs it took the HKS car to run the times it runs - it didn't just come out onto the track and run a high 7 straight away. It may be an individual providing the $ for the project rather than a company, but everybody involved with GTR700 deserves a fair bit of credit for building the impressive machine they did. If we're gonna call Mario a chequebook racer in a bad kinda way, i guess we should be saying the same for 99% of the other fast drag cars out there.

Just my $0.02c.

Tall poppy syndrome strikes again. It would be nice if just one accomplishment could be met with congratulations and encouragement, instead of with the contempt and criticism most success stories are met with in this country. Congrats Mario, don't let the small, petty individuals who choose to downplay your feat get to you. If it were up to them there would be no achievers in this country, everyone aiming for the lowest common denominator so they could feel better about their failed lives.

I suppose its because those cars are workshop and factory backed, not privately owned and funded in the case of GTR700...not to mention tall poppy syndrome.

The most spectacular part I find about this car is the owner and more not the car itself. He has had the strong determination to push on amidst many struggles and problems, most people will crack way before this and give up hope, yet Mario put aside much of his personal life to fund the project with all the knowledge and experience he could. Money makes power, but it doesn't build a quick reliable car....and Ive seen this with my own eyes many times.

Now to build some thing to this extreme of course it takes a lot of money, but again do you think a set of pistons that will withstand the combustion pressures a 1400? odd hp engine on 3+bar of boost without using some exotic (read ultra-expensive) light weight alloy and last more than 10seconds. You cant approach a car like this without having the financial backing behind you, that is why most people such as Victor Bray (for example) have sponsors behind them to help back up the expensive costs of what big horsepower does to an engine driveline components and vehicle....Research costs money because if you don't break it then you don't know its weakness.

But whether the cost or not they do it because they enjoy it...as with Mario. Im sure he earns a good amount of money, but with all the costs (money and time) of building such a drag car has still taken a toll on his pocket / life. You don't make a lot of money (legally) without dedicating a lot of time to making it.

So congratulations to Mario, Jim and the CRD boys, Andrej and everybody else who assisted in the project. Everybody has done a spectacular job, and I feel because of Marios determination it all went to plan so well. I mean who else could get the CRD guys to work 24/7 on a car to have it finished!!! *hides*

I'm a chequebook racer.

No-one can be an expert at everything.

Stick to what you are good at, and pay people to do the stuff you can't.

I also pay someone to:

clean the house

service the car

install new flourescent lights

drive the bus to work

manage my bank account

make good coffee

build furniture

etc etc

(that 2c worth did not include gst since advice is not my genuinue business)

anyone on this board who says he is a chequebook racer is a hypocrite... why do we all love stopping at the lights against holdens and fords?? cause we have a better car ... why?? cause we have more money?? so we're all chequebook racers ... i say congrats to him .. i wish i had the knowledge not to mention the money to do this sort of thing!!!

cause we have a better car ... why?? cause we have more money

What a load of rubbish. Compared to a couple of my mates who drive Gen III's etc, i'm a flaming peasant... The fact that we have better cars has nothing to do with having more money.

NB: IMHO, anyone who says that anyone else is a chequebook racer is a hypocrite or jealous or both. Simple. Mario doesn't own a workshop, it isn't a promotional vehicle that will see him pumping Motul into Yokahama's finest, it's his car to do with as he pleases. Good on him.

To anyone that says things like, "If i had the money I'd do the same thing", all I can do is agree with you. You don't have to say it as a knock though. Come on....

$0.02

sh1t I am cheque book racer as well why cause its better to go to people who kow what they are doing or who have done the stuff b4.

but funnily enough they always ask me how do you do this or that :D yeah I minght not work on my car my self but like mario I under stand my car and why and how I'm going to achive my goals.

its just that marios goals are different to mine ;)

cheers

    • You just need to remove the compressor housing, not the entire turbo. I would not be drilling and tapping anything with the housing still on anyways.
    • So, I put my boat on a boat. First of all, I'm going to come out and say it. Why is Tasmania not considered a holy goal, an apex that all road-legal modified cars go to, to experience? This place is an absolute wonderland of titanic proportions. If people are already getting club runs for once in a lifetime 30 person cruises to Tassy then I've never seemed to see it. It is like someone replaced the entire place with an idyllic wonderland for cars, and all of the people living there with paid actors who are kind, humble, and friendly. Dear god. After doing a lap of almost all of the place I've found that it's a great way to find out all of the little things that the car isn't doing quite right and a great way to figure it all out. All in all, I drove for 4 hours a day for a week and nothing broke. I didn't even need to open the engine bay. This is by all means a great success, but it has left me with a list of things to potentially address. I also now have a 3D printed wheel fitment tool which annoyingly hasn't got any threads in it to actually assemble it. I might be able to tape it together to check the sizing I actually want to use, but it'll likely involving pulling the shocks out to properly measure travel at least at the front, and probably raise the car while I'm at it, at least in the rear. I scraped on quite a few things and I'm not sure how else to go about it. I was taking anything with a bump at what felt like 89 degree angles. And address those 10 other tasks. And wash the car. God damn it is dirty. And somehow, the weather was perfect the entire time - And because I was on the top of Mt Wellington it turns out it was very much about to freeze up there. I did something I typically never do and took some photos up there in what must have been -10 and the foggy felt like suspended ice, rather than mere fog. If you own a car in Australia, you owe it to yourself to do it.
    • Damn that was hilarious, and a bit embarrassing for skylines in general 😂 vintage car life ey. That R33 really stomped. Pretty entertaining stuff
    • Hi, I have a r32 gtr transmission. Does any of you guys have an idea how much power it will hold with the billet center plate and stock gearset? At what power level and use did yours brake with or without billet plate? Thanks, Oystein Lovik
    • Saw this replica police car based on a Mitsubishi Starion XX parked next to a 'police box' (it's literally a box) in Hirohata, Himeji City in Hyogo prefecture the other day. It's owned by Morii-san who is a local Mitsubishi Starion enthusiast. According to a local radio station blog post, he always wanted to make a police car himself based on ones he saw in his favourite Manga comics.  As it's illegal to modify a car to look like a police car and drive on the road, Morii-san tried many times to get permission from Aboshi police station headquarters nearby. They refused initially by after they got tired of that they granted him permission. However, the car can only be displayed on private property and obviously can't be registered as long as the police livery is present. The car was completed at a cost of 1.5 million yen (US$ 10,000) in addition to the car cost. A location was chosen outside Hirohata Police box where the car can easily been seen from the street. Morii-san has two other Starion road cars, both widebody GSR-VRs.
