My 32 gtr seems to really tail happy and I was wondering if anybody out there has done the modification to the transfer case where you add another clutch to lock it all up. I have a spare case and I was considering splitting both of the cases and build up one with the extra cluch to hopefully drive the front wheels a little faster so the car is more balanced when I gas it out of corners because at the moment the car just seems to oversteer and not four wheel drift/ drive hard out of the corner. There is drive to the front wheels but I want more. The engine and gearbox are out of the car next week so I thought I might give it a go. I have read bad things about the electronic controllers so I don't really want to go there.

If people with any experiance with this mod could help me out it would be much appriciated.

I have rebuilt a transfere case but never added extra clutches, I guess it can be done but I would be a little worried about not getting it right and the clutches wearing out due to contacting each other all the time. There isnt alot of room in their so make sure if you do it measure everything carefully to make there is enough ample room to allow for it. I just rebuilt mine with all new clutch plates and seals as the other where pretty worn and the gearbox I did it on only had a genuine 100k on it and never had a great deal of power so I would hate to see some of the thrashed ones...

Hope this helps!!!

Don't you mean CRD's Jap mechanic, or does he work for you direct now?

Our tuner is Jim Souvas....or can't that be right either....cause he works for CRD.

If you were at the last drag day you would have seen both of these guys crawling over our car doing all the necessary tweaks....and on a Sunday too.........

You really need to spend less time on your keyboard and more time at the track!

Does anybody know of any skylines that have been modded by ben?

Gareth, heaps of people. Probably all, if not most of the track GTR's that come out of his workshop have been tinkered in varying ways and this is one of the mods.

Fair enough too if he wouldnt let out openly what is done. Give him a call and see what you can organise B)

From what i can translate from Tom it involves removing the thick clutch plates from the transfer case and replacing them with more thin ones. this gives the plates in the transfer clutch more surface area and stops/reduces clutch plate slippage.....much like a multi plate engine clutch.

  • 10 months later...

After all this time I have the g/box out and the transfer case ready to be pulled apart. Waiting on buying a torx bit (Also go the g/box out in 1.5 hours a new record for me). I hope by reading the manual that if I measure the shim at the end of the retaining plate and the retaining ring I can see how much wear there is before I start or I can measure the thickness whilest its apart. It is not a big job pulling it apart by what I have read. Hopefully I will know by tomorrow night. Looking at the shim sizes there is like a few of you have said not a lot of space in there. I just find it wierd how one of my gtr's pulls around corners with the front and the other doesn't. Maybe I should have bleed the system and checked the diagnostics before I pulled it apart. I now have three transfer cases in my hands so I might just pick the one with the best lot of clutch's if I can't squeeze one more in there. I will let you all know shortly.

    • The oil pressure sensor for logging, does it happen to be the one that was slowly breaking out of the oil block? If it is,I would be ignoring your logs. You had a leak at the sensor which would mean it can't read accurately. It's a small hole at the sensor, and you had a small hole just before it, meaning you could have lost significant pressure reading.   As for brakes, if it's just fluid getting old, you won't necessarily end up with air sitting in the line. Bleed a shit tonne of fluid through so you effectively replace it and go again. Oh and, pay close attention to the pressure gauge while on track!
    • I don't know it is due to that. It could just be due to load on track being more than a dyno. But it would be nice to rule it out. We're talking a fraction of a second of pulling ~1 degree of timing. So it's not a lot, but I'd rather it be 0... Thicker oil isn't really a "bandaid" if it's oil that is going to run at 125C, is it? It will be thicker at 100 and thus at 125, where the 40 weight may not be as thick as one may like for that use. I already have a big pump that has been ported. They (They in this instance being the guy that built my heads) port them so they flow more at lower RPM but have a bypass spring that I believe is ~70psi. I have seen 70psi of oil pressure up top in the past, before I knew I had this leak. I have a 25 row oil cooler that takes up all the space in the driver side guard. It is interesting that GM themselves recommend 0-30 oil for their Vette applications. Unless you take it to the track where the official word is to put 20-50w oil in there, then take that back out after your track day is done and return to 0-30.
    • Nice, looks great. Nice work getting the factory parts also. Never know when you'll need them.
    • Thanks @jtha7 I will have a look around tomorrow but it is a prick of a spot. These are some photos i tried taking
    • I take it that the knock retard is from bearings tapping a little tune? Thicker oil is a fragile bandaid. You need a much bigger oil cooler and probably the bigger pump being discussed.
