My diff is starting to open wheel, and I am looking at my options. As the car already makes a lot more power than the standard diff was meant to handel, I was wondering if it is worthwhile fixing it, or replacing it with a GTR diff?

My questions are :

1. are they interchangable?

2. can I just change the center or should I also change the 1/2 shafts.

3. are r32 and r33 GTR diffs the same? (or do I have to find one from a 33)

4. are the GTR diffs any stronger (I would have thought so but I may be wrong)

Any advise sought, but I would love to here frome someone who has done this already. I realise I could go for an aftermarket diff, but the car isnt driven thet hard often enough for me to justify the $2000 (installed) price tags I have been given.

I can only answer question 4 for you...they are stronger..and good..I have a quote here that says .."so good are the stock 1.5 way GTR differentials that you would not change them for virtually any purpose, Plenty of cars have run 9 second passes on them which is a testament to how well they work". How ever I was thinking will it really work out that much cheaper than a new aftermarket one? Not too sure on the prices of the actuall diff but the labour might make it almost the same cost if it is somthing that hasnt been done too often before! Any way best of luck with it and let us know if it works out!

I believe they have a different spline in the centre, so will need to have the shafts as well as they are a six bolt fitting off the diff instead of five bolt in GTS25t.

I don't believe they are a 1.5 diff in the true sense but are a much stronger viscous diff. I could be wrong but mine does not drive like that. It will scrub up on tight turns in the car park.

I also believe the housings are different but centres interchangable.

I reckon you need an answer to q2 before you decide to replace the whole thing.

"2. can I just change the center or should I also change the 1/2 shafts."

Sorry I'm not sure if the 32 gtr one fits tho. When the centre in my 33 gave up I put a mechanical centre in.

I have been offered a GTR rear end for a few hundred dollars.

The $1100 Kaaz option is the price I was quoted for the center only, then I neeed to install it, plus bearings, plus plus, pluss (final price between 1500-2500 depending upon what they find) Hence the interest in a n R32 GTR diff option.

OK then, sounds like the GTR option is a good one. What I am left unsure of is if a GTR diff from an R32 (full set disk to disk), can  be grafted into my 33GTSt?

I don't see why it wouldn't, i put one straight into a 200SX, there was only one mounting bracket difference since you have a skyline it should go straight in :P

installing the gtr diff will be similar cost to installing the kaaz centre (maybe more hassel if tailshaft/driveshafts doesn't bolt up to the gtr housing)

if you don't want to crack open the diff housing, maybe look for a second hand 2 way (eg nismo, cusco, or kaaz) which comes with housing.

But seriously changing centres isn't very hard, main time consuming part of changing diff is removing / reinstalling the diff housing from the car.

    • Hey all  im wondering if you can help me please I have put a rb20 box in my r34 gtt as my auto packed up and a friend had a spare box I know it’s not ideal but it will get me up and running for now. we have done the conversation and everything is working great but my Speedo we got a s13 speed sensor but my Speedo reads double now and I bought a speed converter but still not having any luck.  so I thought I’ll reach out and pick your brains  any help would be appreciated please as I wanna drive my car again
    • Drain it. I got official Matic D but you can get whatever is listed as Matic D compatible.
    • Thanks guys,  Yeah I should at least have them dynoed, at least then I know what I've got as a starting point.  The springs on these are hard as rocks. I vaguely remember Russman saying he was going to sell the shocks to me with the rocks fitted, as he was keeping the softer springs for his new setup.  I didn't click at the time but of course that was to let me know the shock/spring wouldn't be matched.  I also remember pricing up new springs around 2014-15, but, house, money etc. it never happened. So that was another reason to have them rebuilt. I have rebuilt the forks on many motorcycles so I think I could handle the seals on these easily enough, but getting the valving right would be a rabbit hole I cbf exploring.  Duncan, interesting to hear RP was tuning these back then. I might give them a call.  In the mean time I have been busy fitting sway bars. The Whiteline rear sway bar I purchased 15 years ago finally got fitted, along with the Whiteline front bar that showed up last week. Just waiting on new links for the front sway bar to finish that off.  And my spare set of advan AVS VS5's should be back from the powder coaters in a Pearl White finish sometime this week, with a set of Hankook RS4's lined up for fitting.  And then I just have all the suspension bushes to do. A comprehensive kit is on the way... Lots to do before the Ararat hill climb. Cheers guys 🍻
    • Nice car! I’m glad folks in the US have gotten past the FnF and are buying real cool cars like the 260RS I was with a bunch of mates in Portland about a year ago and spotted a green Stagea (just a regular 2.5T AWD) parked about 2 blocks away and they were like “a what?” So I made a bet with them for a round of beers and said “ok one of you run down there and tell me if the steering wheel is on the correct side” 5 mins later the American comes trudging back up the hill and goes “he’s right guys. Ok what beer do you want?”
    • Should replace OR drop the tank, give it's good clean. Might be worth replacing that entire fuel level/pump/cradle thing with this: https://frenchysperformancegarage.com/products/fpg-s13-180sx-r32gtst-single-pump-hanger-kit-billet-hat-6-v3-fpg-089?gQT=2
